I moved my mom here and I'm very pleased - the community is spotless, homey, and the apartments are comfortable. Meals are restaurant-style and enjoyable, there are lots of engaging activities, and the staff are warm, professional, and attentive (special thanks to Melissa and Ellyn). Leadership communicates well, goes above and beyond, and I trust them with my loved one - I happily recommend this community.

Summary of reviews
Reviews of Colonial Assisted Living at Fort Lauderdale describe a community with notable strengths in location, ambiance, and activities but also recurring operational concerns that families should evaluate closely.
Care and staff: Many accounts highlight warm, personable staff members and positive day-to-day interactions — staff who are described as outgoing, helpful, and attentive in many situations. Reviewers praised specific employees who went above and beyond and noted an activities director who provides individualized attention. However, there are also repeated concerns about staffing stability and responsiveness. Families described delays in addressing requests, inconsistent follow-up after incidents, and gaps in communication when clinical events occurred. There are also mentions of medication-management concerns; prospective families should ask about the facility's medication protocols, pharmacy oversight, and how changes to medications are communicated to families.
Dining and dietary services: The community receives mixed feedback on dining. Some reviewers said food and coffee were satisfactory, while others described inconsistency in quality and a lack of fresh options (for example, reliance on canned fruit). Multiple comments point to failures in honoring dietary requests or communicating dietary changes. Those touring should inquire about menu planning, special-diet accommodations, and the procedure for registering and responding to dietary needs.
Activities and programming: Activity offerings are a clear positive in many reviews. The facility is described as having an active calendar that includes exercise classes, painting, entertainment in the lobby, and neighborhood-style communal spaces that encourage engagement. This programming contributes to a home-like atmosphere rather than an institutional feel and is often cited as a reason families would recommend the community.
Facilities and maintenance: Several reviewers praise recent renovations, attractive architecture, bright rooms with sliding doors, and multiple accommodation choices. At the same time, other comments indicate deferred maintenance in places — carpeting that needs replacement, odor concerns in some common areas, and inconsistent housekeeping in resident rooms. Accessibility limitations were noted for residents with higher care needs or wheelchair dependence; families should verify accessibility and available care levels during a visit.
Management and administration: Feedback on management is mixed and appears to have shifted over time with ownership and leadership changes. Some reviewers commend a welcoming owner and reconstruction efforts; others describe turnover, unpleasant management interactions, unclear admission processes, advance billing practices, and poor follow-through on refunds or financial questions. There are also serious individual claims regarding attempted control of resident finances and inadequate incident handling; these allegations are not universal but indicate the importance of reviewing contractual, billing, and financial-protection procedures prior to admission.
Notable patterns and recommendations: The overall pattern is one of a community with strong social programming, attractive spaces, and caring frontline staff, combined with operational inconsistencies in communication, housekeeping, dietary services, and administrative practices. Prospective residents and families should tour the property (including memory-care areas), ask for written policies on medication changes, incident notification, dietary accommodations, accessibility, staffing ratios, and billing/refund rules, and request the name of a designated liaison for concerns. Verify recent regulatory history and, if possible, speak with current families about both the strengths and the specific operational areas that matter most to your loved one.

About Colonial Assisted Living at Fort Lauderdale
Colonial Assisted Living at Fort Lauderdale is an affordable, family-owned community where seniors can age in place with support as their needs grow. The staff have training in assisted living, memory care, and nursing home-level care, although they don't provide skilled or intermediate care. There's a focus on helping residents maintain their independence, whether they need a little help with daily tasks or more hands-on support, and everyone gets a personalized care plan aimed at their needs and routines. The facility offers assisted living, memory care, independent living, respite care for short stays, and has a capacity for up to 98 residents under Florida License #7249, and you get CNAs, Resident Care staff, and Med Techs on hand day and night, with advanced care options available for those who qualify.
People here get three home-cooked meals a day in a European-style dining area, plus restaurant-style dining options with menus designed by nutritionists and meal planners, and there are private dining rooms for special family events, so everyone can eat together when they visit. The place is pet-friendly for animals under 20 pounds if residents can care for them, and there's a deposit that doesn't get returned. There are options for short-term respite stays, set at $150 per day for at least two weeks, and families pay at admission.
Colonial Assisted Living at Fort Lauderdale encourages honest communication, so residents and families can speak up when there's a problem, and management aims to address any issues within 72 hours, and families can also request weekly updates through the community's communication system. The community has 24-hour supervision and a call system so help is always available, and there's a memory care program for those with dementia or Alzheimer's. Staff complete required training in their first month, including initial Med Tech instruction, and keep their skills fresh with yearly updates. Support goes beyond physical and medical needs, with talk therapy groups and activities each day, fitness classes to help with strength and balance, arts and crafts, holiday parties, and plenty of social gatherings that try to bring folks together.
The building has a main street design and clean, welcoming spaces, with a lobby for residents and visitors to gather and a Friendship Suite built for socializing. Large rooms with sliding doors let in fresh air and light, and all the spaces, inside and out, aim to help residents feel independent, secure, and at home. Transportation is available on certain days for trips around a neighborhood full of cultural diversity, with plenty of nearby parks, cafes, and places for recreation. The facility is close to healthcare providers like University Hospital and Medical Center, Pom MRI and Imaging Center, and CVS Pharmacy. Meals use seasonal ingredients from local farms, and staff pay attention to nutrition, medication needs, and mental health, including offering specialized memory care programming. The community stays open and staffed all through the day and night, keeping folks safe and cared for while making room for independence, friendship, and family connections.
