    Summary of reviews

The reviews for Surrey Place Nursing Center are highly polarized, showing two distinct experience patterns: one group of reviewers reports compassionate, skilled care with strong rehabilitation outcomes and a pleasant environment, while another group reports serious neglect, unprofessional staff behavior, and unsafe clinical conditions. This split suggests inconsistency in care delivery and management practices across different units, shifts, or time periods.

Care quality and clinical oversight: Several reviewers praised an effective rehab team (PT/OT/ST) and noted rapid improvements under therapy. Some families described attentive nurses, knowledgeable staff, and an overall sense that residents were safe and improving. Conversely, multiple reviews recount worrying clinical failures: ignored call lights, forgotten feedings, alleged overmedication to quiet residents, and emergency-level conditions (dehydration, pneumonia, rising blood pressure, kidney failure) that reviewers attribute to inadequate monitoring or delayed escalation. There are also repeated claims of physicians not visiting or declining to see residents, and specific concerns about a neurologist and medication discontinuation. These serious clinical allegations, reported alongside positive clinical anecdotes, highlight a pronounced inconsistency in medical oversight.

Staff behavior and culture: Many reviews single out dedicated, compassionate caregivers — nurses, CNAs, therapists, and specific employees (e.g., Lanika Walker, “Fred”) — who create a family-like atmosphere and are described as angels by grateful families. At the same time, other reviewers describe staff who are unprofessional, chatty, uncaring, or even abusive (ridicule, rough handling). Reports of favoritism, poor CNA-to-patient ratios, and busy staff who prioritize conversation over resident care indicate variability in staffing practices and culture. Some reviewers explicitly call attention to understaffing or scheduling problems that leave residents without timely assistance.

Facilities, cleanliness, and amenities: Several reviewers positively noted pleasant landscaping, outdoor pathways, and interior amenities such as a barber shop, art displays, pool, bingo room, and therapy gym. Some rooms are described as adequate and well-maintained. However, opposing accounts describe dreary rooms, marketing photos that do not match reality, and troubling cleanliness issues (dirty napkins under beds, used band-aids on nightstands, dentures with black mold). This mixed reporting suggests the facility can present nicely in parts or at certain times, but housekeeping and infection-control standards may be inconsistent.

Activities, visitation, and customer service: Many families appreciated activities, hospitality, and accommodating visitation options (window visits, Telehealth), along with an admissions team that several reviewers found helpful and personable. Others, however, reported limited activities, crowded conditions, and poor customer service, including refund disputes and unresponsive phone support. These administrative and hospitality inconsistencies affect family trust and satisfaction.

Management, reliability, and transparency: A recurring theme is uneven management performance. Positive comments cite long-tenured staff and welcoming leadership, while negative commentary points to new or disorganized administration, poor communication, questionable handling of funds, and concerns that some posted positive reviews might not be authentic. Several reviewers recommended transferring residents elsewhere (Solaris was explicitly suggested by one reviewer) after poor experiences. This mixed picture points to variability in oversight, transparency, and accountability across the facility.

Safety and recommendations: Because reviews range from exemplary to alarmingly poor, prospective residents and families should approach Surrey Place with caution. Strengths include a capable rehab team, several compassionate staff members, pleasant outdoor spaces, and some positive administrative experiences. However, the volume and seriousness of negative reports — ignored call lights, clinical deterioration, medication concerns, and cleanliness problems — are significant and recurring. Prospective families should (1) ask for recent, specific references from current families, (2) request a tour of the exact unit and room offered, (3) review staffing ratios and typical staff assignments for the resident’s care level, (4) confirm medication management and physician visitation schedules, and (5) monitor care closely during the first weeks (including verifying responses to call lights and meal assistance).

Overall, Surrey Place appears to deliver excellent care in certain units or under certain staff, but also has multiple, serious complaints suggesting inconsistent standards. The most reliable characterization from the reviews is one of high variability: excellent, family-like care when things align well, and dangerous neglect or unprofessional behavior in other instances. Families should weigh the positive testimonials against the severe negative allegations and seek direct, recent verification of the specific care environment they would be entering.

    About Surrey Place Nursing Center

Surrey Place Nursing Center is a 60-bed skilled nursing facility owned by a for-profit corporation and connected with Benjamin Landa, and it offers 24-hour care for residents needing help with everyday things like bathing, dressing, eating, and taking medicine, and all this is supervised by a physician and supported by nurses who cover the center day and night, with a nurse turnover rate of 43.1 percent, which sits just below the state average. The center meets federal criteria for Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement and gives residents access to skilled nursing care, short-term rehabilitation for recovery from illness or surgery, long-term care, respite care for family caregivers, and specialized memory programs for those living with Alzheimer's and dementia. Staff here create personalized care plans and provide services like wound care, IV therapy, respiratory care, peg tube care, and hospice care, and they also manage medications and offer physical, occupational, and speech therapies right onsite. Surrey Place has private and semi-private rooms-some with private bathrooms, personal climate control, and cable TV-plus comfortable beds, dressers, and windows, and rooms can feel home-like and warm. Residents have access to things like a hair stylist, beauty and barber services, transportation for medical appointments, daily recreational and social activities, and an elegant dining room serving nutritious, chef-prepared meals with dietary accommodations. There's an inviting lobby with lots of light, common spaces for socializing, a residents' lounge, outdoor patios, and landscaped area for fresh air, along with a smoking patio for those who need it, and a physical therapy and rehab gym with equipment for exercises and recovery. The center also has 24-hour security, laundry, housekeeping, and in-room dining, and residents can use internet and cable television. The staff offer podiatry, dental, vision, and audiology services, and specialists can help with Medicaid, psychological care, and social services for extra support. Surrey Place tries to focus on dignity, health, and happiness for residents, and while there's a warm, family-type atmosphere with staff who treat people like family, it's important to note the center has had inspection reports showing infection control problems and failures in keeping resident records safe-there have been two infection-related deficiencies and citations for not fully following infection prevention programs or protecting resident information as required by professional standards. Even so, the facility provides more nurse hours per resident than the state average at 3.96 hours a day and keeps a wide range of services available, with staff aiming for a safe, supportive environment and a focus on the overall wellbeing of the people living there.
