    Attentive caring staff and amenities

I live here and the staff truly go above and beyond-attentive, caring, and led by a knowledgeable owner; the facility is impressively clean and pet-friendly (they even welcomed my dog). Meals are home-cooked and flexible (hot tea on request, fun shrimp-fishing meal nights), activities are plentiful (bingo, visiting singers and dance, arts & crafts, church and Bible study), and amenities like whirlpool/walk-in baths, outdoor seating, doctor transportation and additional housing options make it comfortable-room is adequate and I'm very pleased with the overall care.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews of Five Oaks Rest Home present a mixed picture. Positive accounts emphasize caring, attentive employees and a household-style atmosphere: staff are often described as friendly, helpful, and willing to accommodate resident preferences. Several reviewers highlight home-cooked meals and flexible dining choices, a modest price point, and amenities such as whirlpool/walk-in/soaker baths, outdoor seating, and available transportation to medical appointments. The facility appears to offer spiritual programming, arts-and-crafts, group music and singing, exercise and reading activities, occasional bingo and visiting performers, and permits pets, which some families find valuable.

At the same time, there are recurring operational concerns that prospective families should evaluate. Multiple comments point to limited licensed clinical coverage and use of unlicensed staff for tasks that may require clinical oversight; reviewers also described inconsistent medication administration and timing. Dining impressions vary: while some praise the food as home-cooked and enjoyable, others cite poor quality or temperature issues, indicating variability in meal consistency. Pest-control concerns and indications of an older physical plant appear alongside numerous remarks praising cleanliness, suggesting uneven conditions across areas or units.

Facility infrastructure and safety merit specific questions during a visit. Several reviewers describe small, dated rooms, limited in-room communication (no phones or emergency devices in rooms), and poorly lit walkways that could affect night-time safety and accessibility. Activity programming was characterized as robust by some and sparse by others, implying irregular scheduling or inconsistent delivery of social programs. Family interactions with management are another theme: while some observe a present, knowledgeable owner and respectful interactions, others report strained communication and a management style perceived as heavy-handed, with a perceived emphasis on fiscal priorities.

In summary, Five Oaks demonstrates clear strengths in personal attention, some domestic-style amenities, and community programming, but also shows operational gaps in clinical staffing, medication management, physical infrastructure, and consistent program delivery. Families touring the facility should assess current licensed nursing coverage and medication protocols, inspect room conditions and lighting, inquire about pest-control measures and activity schedules, and speak directly with management about communication practices and financial policies to determine fit for their needs.
