    Attentive, caring, affordable home-like care

I placed my dad in this small, home-like assisted living and I'm very pleased. The staff are attentive, caring, and treated him like family, communication was timely, meals are excellent, rooms are bright and homey, and the grounds are well-kept. Affordable, responsive, and comforting - I highly recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Burnt Hickory Residences presents as a small, two-story assisted living home with a pronounced family-style, farmhouse character. The physical plant combines older-home charm (high ceilings, traditional pane windows, wooden blinds, rocking chairs) with targeted updates to resident rooms and grounds. Residents and families frequently highlight the ability to personalize rooms and the presence of outdoor seating, walkways, and seasonal landscaping; additional exterior upgrades such as a fence and a walking path are noted as planned or in progress. The facility's size and layout contribute to a home-like environment and a generally favorable staff–resident ratio, which many families find comforting.

Care quality and staffing are central themes. Many reviewers praise compassionate, hands-on caregivers, long-tenured staff members, an engaged managing coordinator, and collaborative relationships with on-site physical therapy and hospice partners. These elements translate into strong interpersonal connections for many residents: staff are often described as attentive, respectful, and willing to go beyond basic duties. At the same time, recurring operational concerns include inconsistent staffing levels and difficulty locating staff at times. Several accounts point to gaps in timely incident response and family communication, and there are specific concerns about the consistency and documentation of routine resident checks. Prospective families should ask direct questions about current staffing patterns, rounding protocols, and incident-response procedures.

Dining and activities present a mixed but mostly positive picture. A number of families commend the cook and describe satisfying, country-style meals that residents enjoy; others mention variability in food quality. Activity programming appears modest: the facility supports social engagement (residents teaching classes like knitting and general group activities), but amenity space is limited — small dining and fitness rooms and a compact hairdressing area restrict programming scale. Those seeking an active, program-rich environment should clarify the weekly activity schedule and available therapeutic offerings.

The building itself reflects an older residence adapted for assisted living. Reviewers appreciate the farmhouse aesthetic and well-maintained grounds, but also note cosmetic needs (painting and ongoing upgrades). Private room availability is limited, and communal areas are small relative to larger facilities. Environmental factors include proximity to a busy railroad, which may generate intermittent noise, and some reviewers mentioned staff smoking on the premises, indicating potential policy-enforcement issues. The facility is generally viewed as affordable and good value, but the trade-offs include the building's age, smaller amenity footprint, and less robust memory-care infrastructure.

Overall, Burnt Hickory Residences may suit prospective residents who prioritize a home-like setting, close staff relationships, and affordability. It appears less suitable for individuals requiring intensive memory-care services or for families prioritizing extensive activity programming and larger amenity spaces. Before deciding, families should verify current staffing levels, memory-care capabilities, rounding/check documentation practices, private-room availability, and any noise or outdoor-access concerns to ensure the facility aligns with the resident's clinical and social needs.

    About Burnt Hickory Residences

Burnt Hickory Residences sits in a small, close-knit community where you can see the staff genuinely care for the residents, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that people notice right away, and with the surroundings blending historic architecture with modern comforts, the place does feel both charming and up-to-date, which lots of folks like. The community offers a good range of services, including assisted living, independent living, memory care, nursing home care, hospice care, respite care, home care, residential care homes, and adult daycare, so no matter how much assistance someone needs, there are options here. People who need support with daily activities like bathing, dressing, meal preparation, or even medication management will find that trained staff provide 24-hour supervision and help with those things, and the caregivers have a reputation for being friendly, helpful, and patient, which makes the environment feel welcoming and safe. Seniors with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia can get memory care in a secure area, where specially designed housing and therapies aim to reduce confusion and wandering, while residents with higher care needs or medical monitoring find comprehensive healthcare and supportive services on site. Active and independent seniors can live more freely here, with easy access to transportation, parking, and meal programs focused on nutrition and taste, all planned by experienced chefs. Burnt Hickory Residences encourages a strong sense of community, offering social, physical, mental, and emotional activities, and families appreciate the caregiver support groups and online forums that bring people together. Home care is available, too, with trained aides visiting to help those who want to stay in their houses but still need some daily support or companionship. The facility supports people through all stages, from independent living through higher-acuity nursing or memory care, and even through end-of-life hospice support, and the building itself is handicap accessible, making movement easier for everyone. Awards and positive reviews recognize their effort to put quality, safety, mental wellness, and resident happiness first, and while it's not a large community, that smaller setting often means more personalized care and attention for every resident. Community tours show what daily life is like, including dining options and the many activities that keep folks active and involved, and even though there aren't a lot of unique names for programs or special features, the focus stays on giving seniors the support, choice, and care they need in a genuine, homelike setting.
