    Clean beautiful home, caring staff

I moved my mother to Sunnymere and have been very pleased - clean, home-like, beautifully kept with lovely golf-course views. The staff (Ruth and her team) are warm, attentive and professional, meals are delicious, and there are regular activities that keep residents engaged. It's a small, charming community that gave our family real peace of mind; I would recommend Sunnymere to others looking for caring, comfortable senior living.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression Sunnymere is repeatedly described as a small, home-like assisted living community with strong interpersonal strengths and attractive outdoor surroundings. Reviewers consistently praise the facility’s compassionate staff, high staff-to-resident ratio, and a family-style atmosphere that many residents and families find reassuring. The property’s golf-course views, mature landscaping, and several porch/screen-porch areas are cited as major quality-of-life assets.

Care quality and staff Care and staff performance are the most frequently highlighted positives. Administrators and nurses are named for hands-on leadership, and families note responsiveness around medications, appointments, and daily assistance. Staff are often characterized as kind, patient, and attentive; numerous accounts describe individualized attention and a willingness to assist with small daily needs. At the same time, several accounts raise concerns about staffing stability and workplace practices that could affect consistency of care; families should ask about current staffing ratios, turnover, and staff scheduling practices when evaluating placement.

Dining and support services Dining is commonly described as home-cooked and plentiful, with a cook or chef contributing to a regular menu and meal service that many residents enjoy. Laundry, weekly linen changes, housekeeping, and transportation support are regular components of the service package. That said, some reviewers found the menu repetitive or starchy and suggested variability in meal quality; prospective families may wish to sample meals and review menu rotation during a tour.

Activities and social life Sunnymere offers a range of social and recreational programming—bingo, crafts, movies, happy hour, exercise and group activities are cited frequently—and there are dedicated activity coordinators. This programming contributes to a social environment described as welcoming and engaging for many residents. Conversely, a subset of accounts describes less daytime stimulation or fewer activities at certain times; activity levels and program depth appear to vary and should be confirmed based on current scheduling.

Facilities and accessibility The building’s character—Victorian charm, antiques, and an older manor layout—is a selling point for those seeking a quaint, non-institutional setting. However, the physical plant is dated in places: reviewers describe dark interior spaces, small rooms, limited closet/storage space, and unusual room configurations (e.g., sinks or toilets located in awkward spots). Bathroom privacy is a recurring operational limitation: shared bathrooms, hallway showers, limited shower stalls, and narrow toilet doors are repeatedly noted. Accessibility constraints (narrow doorways, limited walk-in showers, and multi-level layout) and questions about emergency egress in a multi-story building are important considerations for anyone with mobility needs.

Management and notable patterns Leadership and front-line management receive strong positive mentions for communication, compassion, and day-to-day oversight; several families specifically named directors and praised their approachability. There are, however, mixed impressions around tours and communication—some visitors found tours rushed or staff less forthcoming. A small number of reviewers raised workplace-condition concerns that warrant due diligence; prospective families should ask directly about staffing practices, employee retention, and any relevant regulatory history.

Bottom line Sunnymere presents as a warm, small-scale assisted living option with well-regarded staff, attractive outdoor spaces, and a strong home-cooked dining tradition. Trade-offs center on the older building and its operational implications: limited private bathrooms, constrained accessibility, small room sizes, and dim interior spaces. These physical and operational limitations can matter more for residents with advanced mobility or privacy needs. Prospective residents and families should prioritize an in-person meal, a detailed tour of room and bathroom layouts, a review of staffing patterns and emergency plans, and clarification of current activity schedules to determine fit.

    About Sunnymere

Sunnymere sits on over 7 acres right by Phillips Park Golf Course in Aurora, Illinois, with plenty of outdoor patios, gardens, and scenic views from almost every window you find, and that beautiful green stretch out there just kind of softens every day. The building, which opened back in 1939 as 'The Old Ladies' Home of Aurora,' really shows its age in a charming way with high ceilings, hardwood floors, and rustic, Colonial-revival brickwork, and you'll find antique furniture, covered verandas, and screened-in porches just about everywhere. Sunnymere runs as a nonprofit and keeps a family feel with room for no more than 47 residents, so people tend to recognize each other in the hallways and around the big gathering spaces, where there's always a story or two being told.

Sunnymere gives folks choices, with semi-private, studio, single rooms, one-room, and two-room suites-couples can stay together here, and there are two-bedroom apartments also, with closets and individual climate controls. Residents have cable and internet already wired in, and covered guest parking's available too, so family and friends can come for visits-there's even a spot for an overnight guest to stay. Meals are served three times a day family-style in a communal dining room, which means everybody has someone to sit with, and you won't have to worry about cooking. Staff does the chores five days a week, handling laundry and fresh linens, and there are all sorts of gathering areas indoors too, including a Great Room for meetings and activities, a recreation room, a gym, and a covered patio for when the weather's good.

Retired seniors 65 and older, whether still living fully on their own or needing a hand now and then, find support here from a caring staff and an Executive Director who's a registered nurse. Nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, and podiatrists visit regularly, while a part-time nurse is onsite for health monitoring. Residents with light or medium care needs-like needing reminders to take medicines, help with bathing, dressing, toileting, grooming, or help moving from bed to wheelchair-get personal support any time of the day or night. The staff responds to emergencies 24/7, and memory care for those with Alzheimer's or dementia provides extra security to help prevent wandering and reduce confusion. Incontinence care and diabetic support-where people still must handle their own testing and insulin-are available for those who need it.

People who enjoy activities will find quite a few choices: gardening groups meet outside, there are arts and crafts, book clubs, lectures, educational programs, story times, and special seasonal and holiday events. Regular things like ice cream socials, movie nights, lunch outings, and game nights keep the calendar full, and if you want to stretch your legs, there's transportation to shopping or doctors' appointments. Sunnymere lets you bring a pet, though there are some rules, but if you prefer not to live with animals, you can get a pet-free setup too.

There's a beauty salon and barber services, and folks can get haircuts on-site, especially Thursdays and Fridays when the beautician's in. Spiritual life is part of things here, with religious and devotional services. Each resident gets space to relax, watch the big screen TV or Wii, or join one of the many discussion groups, and newsletters and activity calendars keep people in the loop. The nonprofit community keeps prices all-inclusive, so you don't pay extra for meals, laundry, housekeeping, or activities, you just pay the rent, there's no buy-in or lease. The board of directors, made up of volunteers from the local area, oversees everything, and they focus on running things according to Sunnymere's mission-to make life comfortable, safe, and interesting for seniors, whether they need just a little help or want community living with a touch of rustic charm.
