I'm very pleased with this continuing-care community - spotless, gorgeous riverfront grounds and bright, remodeled rooms. The staff are consistently friendly, attentive and compassionate, with a helpful concierge and dependable drivers; dining is excellent and the public spaces, pool and gym are well maintained. There are abundant activities and a full continuum of care, so I feel comfortable, well cared for and socially engaged.

    Summary of reviews

Covenant Living at the Holmstad is described across reviews as a large, well-resourced continuing-care community with a scenic campus, extensive amenities, and a broad continuum of services from independent living through skilled nursing. Reviewers emphasize the facility's attractive landscaping, bright and recently remodeled resident rooms, and multiple recreational outlets including a pool, gym, woodworking shop, walking paths with benches, gardens, and organized outings. The continuing-care model and apparent financial stability are cited as strengths for residents seeking long-term options and predictable access to higher levels of care.

Staff and care quality receive generally positive remarks: reviewers characterize staff as compassionate, attentive, and proactive, and several accounts highlight smooth transitions into assisted living and skilled nursing when needed. On-site therapy and fitness programs, plus concierge and transportation services, are noted as supportive of residents' independence. The community's faith-based orientation and social programming — concerts, cards, clubs, and regular activities — contribute to a warm, engaged atmosphere for many residents.

Dining and hospitality are mixed in the aggregate. Many reviewers praise the restaurant-style dining, buffet choices, and generally enjoyable food, along with clean public spaces and well-stocked guest rooms. However, there are recurring operational concerns about meal scheduling variability and occasional inconsistency in meal quality; some families also noted that certain meal options are not included in base fees, creating billing complexity. Admissions processes and bed assignments have produced specific communication breakdowns for some families, leading to frustration during move-in or placement transitions.

Clinical and administrative gaps noted across reviews center on communication and consistency rather than an absence of capability. Several reviewers described medication-change notifications and other clinical communications as uneven, and some recommended active family advocacy to ensure timely adjustments and close oversight. There is also a pattern indicating a difference in environment quality between the independent/low-care areas (described as bright and homelike) and some higher-acuity units (described as more institutional in atmosphere), which prospective residents and families should evaluate in person.

Cost and contract considerations appear as a practical concern. Reviewers point to relatively high entrance deposits, ongoing fees, and the potential for price increases; transparency on what is included in base fees versus additional charges for meals or services is an important consideration. Overall, the Holmstad presents many operational strengths — strong staffing culture, comprehensive amenities, and an established continuum of care — balanced against administrative and communication areas that warrant careful inquiry during touring and contracting. Prospective residents should prioritize discussing admissions timelines, medication-management communication protocols, meal-plan inclusions, and touring both independent- and higher-acuity units to confirm fit and expectations.

About Covenant Living at the Holmstad

Covenant Living at the Holmstad sits on 38 wooded acres in the Fox River Valley, with many trees, walking paths, and outdoor seating where folks can visit, relax, or watch the seasons change. The campus has a chapel, scenic water features, patios, a community garden, and plenty of peaceful spots for spending time outside, and people often enjoy the walking and hiking trails. The community offers independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing, all within the same place, so residents can stay as their needs change, and there's a waitlist if you want one of the independent living homes. The living options include studios, one-bedrooms, two-bedrooms, duplexes, and each unit gives you closet space, a living room, kitchen appliances, climate controls, washer/dryer, WiFi, and cable TV, and the pet policy allows pets in independent living.

The Michaelsen Health Care Center offers palliative, in-home health, hospice, and skilled nursing care, and the healthcare team includes full-time nursing staff available day and night, plus trained experts for medication management, injections, wound care, chronic illness, cardiac support, and more, with physical, occupational, and speech therapy on site, along with support for memory care and post-stroke recovery. Folks can get help with bathing and incontinence, and short-term respite stays exist but may pause if there's high occupancy. There's a dietician, podiatry services, and dietary management available, too, and staff speak English and Spanish. The pharmacy is on site, with medication reminders and management, and there are references and background checks for all staff, who get ongoing training.

Dining fits whatever level of care you're in, with options like a coffee shop, casual and fine dining, a demonstration kitchen, and outdoor seating. Residents can enjoy chef-prepared meals, flexible meal plans, room service, and takeout, and there's a Bistro 700 and communal dining rooms for sharing meals with friends or family, plus menus for allergies or special diets. The activities calendar covers fitness classes like Tai Chi, yoga, and aquatic programs, trips with the community transportation service, games, creative arts, music, movie nights in the theater, support groups, and even an annual bazaar. There's a fitness center, pool, hot tub spa, creative arts center, library, general store, beauty salon, and event spaces for sports, crafts, spiritual gatherings, and lawn games, with religious services, chaplain staff, Catholic services, and counseling for those who want it.

Maintenance, housekeeping, laundry, groundskeeping, pest control, and plant care get handled by staff, and there's a secure campus with emergency response, alert systems, security guards, controlled access, and wheelchair-accessible transportation, plus safety checks and support for ambulatory needs. Residents get help moving in and arranging their space, can park in lots or garages, and take part in programs from the LifeConnect wellness center focused on staying healthy, active, and connected. The campus is not-for-profit and faith-based and holds a state license, providing a full continuum of care so many can age in place for as long as possible. People find a lively community here, with familiar faces and lots to do, and there are several entrance fee choices, some refundable, depending on what suits your situation. The community is busy, with a long list of folks waiting for independent living, and takes pride in keeping clear and timely communication with families, and in having residents' needs and complaints handled quickly by the right staff depending on the level of care needed.
