    Caring staff kept mom safe

My mother has been at Freeburg Care Center for months and I'm very pleased - their infection control kept residents safe (no COVID cases) so families could hug again. Rebecca and the staff have been attentive, even helping repair her hearing aids so she can follow her daily routine; therapy, nursing and administration consistently go above and beyond. The building is very clean and odor-free, with daily activities (Mom loves bingo) and excellent communication - residents are treated like family. I highly recommend FCC for their skilled, caring, and respectful team.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews of Freeburg Care Center are polarized: many families and some staff describe consistently compassionate caregiving, strong therapy services, and a clean, well-maintained environment, while other accounts raise serious concerns about workplace culture, discrimination, and operational practices.

Care quality is frequently praised for its hands-on nature. Multiple reviewers highlight attentive, patient, and knowledgeable nursing staff, and several single-out the therapy department as a particular strength; rehabilitation and restorative programming are described as effective and well-staffed. Families also note clear communication from staff and management, assistance with adaptive equipment and device support (for example, help with hearing aids), and personal attention to residents’ daily needs.

Activity programming and facilities receive positive comments as well. Reviewers mention regular, personalized activities (bingo and weekly events are common), a family-like community atmosphere, and on-site amenities including in-room television. The facility is commonly described as clean and odor-free, and residents are characterized as friendly—contributing to an overall sense of a welcoming living environment.

Contrasting these positives, several reviews describe significant operational and cultural concerns. There are allegations of discriminatory treatment directed at residents and staff, and at least one reviewer referenced regulatory involvement related to those concerns. Reviewers also describe staffing pressures and tensions with agency nurses: understaffing, high workloads, and restrictive or punitive policies that affect morale and working relationships. Specific practices noted by reviewers that reflect broader operational patterns include intrusive monitoring and strict break/time-management approaches, which some staff report as negatively affecting workplace climate.

Clinical-safety perceptions are mixed. Infection-control efforts are praised in several accounts—reviewers credited staff with keeping residents safe during infectious outbreaks. At the same time, there are concerns following a resident’s infection-related decline and death; these accounts point to perceived gaps in clinical oversight and follow-up communication in at least some cases. Taken together, the material suggests that while everyday care and rehabilitation can be strong, families should seek clear information about clinical oversight, incident response, and staffing ratios.

For prospective residents and families: consider touring the facility, meet care and therapy staff, observe activities, and ask direct questions about staffing levels, agency-staff policies, diversity and non-discrimination procedures, staff monitoring practices, and how clinical incidents and family communications are handled. These steps can help weigh the noted strengths in caregiving and therapy against the serious culture- and staffing-related concerns raised by other reviewers.

    About Freeburg Care Center

Freeburg Care Center stands open all day and night, every day, so residents always have someone there to help, and folks can schedule tours from Monday through Friday between 8 in the morning and 4:30 in the afternoon if they want to see things for themselves, often meeting with staff who answer questions about the programs and services. The care center supports older adults starting at 55 years old, offering options like independent living, assisted living, nursing home care, memory care, respite care, home care, hospice, and continuing care, which means families don't have to worry about moving a loved one as needs change. Skilled nurses are always on-site, ready to help with daily activities, pain and skin care, medication, and doctor visits, providing therapies like physical, occupational, and speech therapy with rehabilitation programs that help folks build strength and independence, and there's a Restorative Nursing program as well. People in the center enjoy nutritious meals made under the care of a trained Dietary Manager, with meals and diets planned out for health and comfort, and the Activity Director puts together a wide range of events and activities, such as church services, socials, bingo, Wii games, bowling, music, a beauty or barber shop visit, watching movies, hanging out by the bird aviary, or joining in for something special that pops up on the calendar. Freeburg Care Center has a full staff with nurses, an Administrator, Assistant Director of Nursing, Therapy Director, Medical Records Coordinator, Social Services Director, Dietary Manager, Housekeeping and Laundry Supervisor, Business Office Manager, a dedicated Maintenance Director, and a Central Supply/Medical Records Director, which gives families confidence that all parts of life are being managed carefully. Folks get personal tours if they want to visit, and the facility shows off some highlights, activities, and amenities in their online gallery, which can be found at freeburgcarecenter.com, and they're on social media platforms like Facebook, too. Freeburg Care Center holds a four-star rating, is Medicare and Medicaid approved, licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health, and has served St. Clair County and Southern Illinois for over 30 years, staying locally owned and operated. The place offers care that's reasonably priced and supports older adults' physical, social, and emotional needs through its team's experience with small town hospital care and a focus on personalized attention, along with help from social services and nutrition staff who guide people and their families, helping them understand healthcare choices or navigate resources in the community. Seniors and their families can also lean on short- or long-term special care, pharmacy services, in-house restorative care, and regular on-site physician visits, all while being encouraged to take part in family meetings and group activities that support comfort, dignity, and well-being.
