    Caring staff, safe memory care

I placed my mother in the memory care unit and I'm very satisfied - the staff (especially nurses Trish and Alice and CNA Janice Leonard) are caring, dedicated and available 24/7. The facility feels safe, clean and homely with beautiful grounds, varied activities, rehab services and frequent family-friendly events. The team keeps families informed, meals and dining options are good, and I highly recommend this community.

    Summary of reviews

Eastern Star Masonic Home is described overall as a full-service, campus-style senior community offering independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing. Reviewers consistently praised the caregiving staff and the facility’s continuity of care: families highlighted 24/7 nursing coverage in higher-acuity units, effective rehabilitation services, and individual caregivers who go above and beyond. The facility is also noted for being welcoming to families and pets, with staff frequently described as kind, helpful during the admission decision process, and responsive to routine inquiries.

The activities program and campus life are a clear strength. The community runs a broad schedule of daily activities, outings, seasonal and family-friendly events, and resident-led opportunities (for example, a thrift shop, computer lab, and Wii-based programming). Grounds and common spaces receive positive mentions—attractive landscaping, a courtyard with a pond and fountain, and an open atrium contribute to a homely, social atmosphere that many residents and visitors find pleasant.

Dining is a mixed picture. The facility provides multiple choices at meals and a casual dining environment that many residents enjoy, but comments indicate variability in food quality and menu appropriateness. Some reviewers found meals flavorful and plentiful, while others described bland or spicy options and menus that are not consistently tailored to older-adult dietary needs. There are also isolated sanitation and food-handling concerns that prospective families should probe during a tour and in reference checks.

Operationally, reviewers point to a few recurring weaknesses. Private-room quality and bathroom availability are inconsistent across units, and some families felt the physical accommodations did not always align with price. The campus layout and a mix of building vintages produce a non-uniform environment across units. Several comments also indicate intermittent gaps in staff responsiveness and family communication—including delays in one-to-one attention during busy periods and occasional problems with room-assignment or care-transition processes. Those operational areas appear to be the most common sources of dissatisfaction among otherwise positive impressions.

In summary, Eastern Star Masonic Home is portrayed as a well-staffed, socially active community with a strong emphasis on resident engagement and a wide spectrum of clinical services. Prospective residents and families should weigh the clear strengths in staff compassion, activity programming, and campus amenities against variability in dining, room finishes, bathroom availability, and occasional communication or operational lapses. During a visit, focus questions on meal planning for medical diets, private-bathroom availability, staffing ratios at peak times, and the facility’s procedures for room assignments and incident communication to help assess fit for individual needs.

    About Eastern Star Masonic Home

Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, Iowa, has cared for older adults for over 100 years and stands at 715 W Mamie Eisenhower Ave, welcoming folks who need all kinds of support, from independent living in their cottages to skilled nursing in the newly remodeled Health Center with up to 58 beds and round-the-clock staff. This nonprofit community is part of the Masonic organization and has its Heritage Club run by the Order of Eastern Star of Iowa, and it's got a bit of everything, including seven different care levels like duplex cottages that give you more independence, private assisted living rooms in the Courtyard Terrace where nurses like Cortney Rose, LPN help with daily needs, and the Hearth Stone Memory Care Unit for those dealing with Alzheimer's or Dementia, with 18 rooms set up for comfort and privacy. There's a dedicated staff in the Health Center, and folks like Activities Director April Elsberry keep up a busy schedule with movies, parties, shopping trips, religious programs, and even exercise classes, so there's something for everyone whether you want to stay active with games and classes or just visit with neighbors in one of the lounges or the chapel with daily devotions. The place has a Wellness Center that's open to anyone in the community 50 and older, which has a therapy pool by Hydroworx, an indoor walking track, cardio machines, weights, and offers fitness classes, personal training you can buy sessions for, and even a coffee and juice bar, and people can get memberships for full access or just sign up for classes, plus there's insurance help and guiding folks and their families with long-term care needs-admissions are handled by Julie Rossow. Residents bring their own stuff and have private suites or couple suites with bathrooms, and everything's pre-wired for TV and the internet, and you get assistance with bathing, dressing, meds, and other day-to-day things as needed. There are three beauty salons, a game room with a pool table, free internet in the computer room, and pretty grounds for getting outside. The staff tries to know folks by name and keep things welcoming, with a 4.6 rating from 49 reviewers, and the whole place runs Monday through Friday from 8 in the morning to 5 in the evening, but the care continues 24 hours. With so many choices, like residential care that's more affordable, cottages for independence, and help every step along the way, Eastern Star Masonic Home covers a wide range of senior needs and isn't one of those places that ever feels cold-there's always someone to talk to and plenty of practical help if you want it. They also have a helpful website if folks want to look up more details.
