    Hometown facility with caring staff

I'm very happy with this delightful, hometown-feel facility-clean, no weird smells, and staffed by caring, locally based people and lovely nurses who communicate well. My loved one is well cared for, with plenty of activities (games, beer & pizza, wine & cheese, ice cream socials, hair and nail days) and thoughtful support for dementia-related needs; overall I'm very satisfied and comfortable recommending it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Reviews convey a mixed but distinct pattern. Many accounts emphasize strengths typical of a small, hometown facility — compassionate nursing, good communication with families, a clean environment, and an active social calendar — alongside recurring operational and leadership concerns that warrant inquiry by prospective residents and their families.

Care and staff: Nursing personnel are frequently described as caring and attentive, and families note that many residents are well looked after. At the same time, several accounts indicate variability at the certified nursing assistant (CNA) level: inconsistent conduct, delays in responding to toileting and personal-care needs, and uneven frontline supervision. These operational gaps suggest opportunities for clearer protocols, stronger hands-on training, and closer monitoring of shift-level performance.

Dining and activities: The facility’s social programming is a clear strength. Residents participate in a wide range of activities — games, ice-cream socials, themed food-and-drink events (for example beer-and-pizza or wine-and-cheese gatherings), and regular hair and nail services — that contribute to social engagement and resident enjoyment. Reviewers highlight these events as meaningful contributors to residents’ quality of life.

Facilities and environment: Physical-space comments are largely positive. The facility is described as clean and well maintained, with a pleasant, community-oriented atmosphere. These environmental strengths align with the positive remarks about daily life and activities.

Management and oversight: The most significant pattern of concern involves leadership, staffing oversight, and accountability. Multiple accounts describe unresponsiveness to complaints, visible staff disputes, and instances that raise questions about supervision and fitness-for-duty controls. There are also descriptions of retaliation risk when staff or family members raise issues. Collectively, these observations point to weaknesses in complaint handling, human-resources follow-through, and regulatory/safety oversight rather than to a single, isolated failing.

Notable patterns and guidance: The facility appears to offer strong social programming and generally positive nursing care, but recurring operational themes — inconsistent CNA performance, training shortfalls, and weak administrative follow-up on safety and personnel issues — suggest prospective families should proactively ask about staffing levels, CNA training programs, incident reporting procedures, staff screening and impairment policies, and how the facility investigates and communicates about concerns. Those topics will help clarify whether the positive day-to-day experience is consistently supported by robust management and compliance practices.

    About Rose Haven Nursing Home

Rose Haven Nursing Home sits at 1500 Franklyn Ave in Marengo, Iowa, where it's been caring for seniors since 1964, and it's been independently owned all along, which gives it that family-like feeling people always talk about, with staff like RNs, LPNs, CNAs, cooks, and maintenance all working together and really getting to know the residents, and you can tell because so many reviewers mention how kindness and friendliness stand out every day. The facility offers both skilled nursing and long-term care, so there's help for anything from short recovery stays after an illness or surgery to permanent living for folks who need more support, and they make sure 24/7 nursing care is always available. People find help with daily things like bathing, dressing, and getting around, and they also receive medication management, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, all personalized to fit what each person needs.

Rose Haven provides specialized care for those with Alzheimer's or other types of dementia, using careful routines, monitoring, and safe spaces to cut down on confusion and wandering, and there's always attention on reducing anxiety and helping folks feel secure. The staff coordinates with families and health providers to support residents' mental, physical, and emotional health, and they offer social services to help everyone adjust and feel supported. Meals stand out here; there's a dining room with scheduled service and menus made by a Registered Dietician, so meals are nutritious, home-cooked, and can be changed if someone needs an allergy-friendly or diabetic diet, and there's always an option for alternative meals.

You'll find activity programs running each week, with everything from games, spiritual groups, movie nights, community socials, and even some night and weekend events, all designed to keep people more engaged and connected. The grounds have walking paths and tended gardens, and inside the rooms are furnished with things like telephones for each resident. There's independent and assisted living at The Lodge on Lafayette, which is a connected building with ten units for people who want a bit more privacy but still enjoy access to services and social activities.

Rose Haven's building has seen many upgrades since 2016, including a new whirlpool room and plenty of remodeling to keep things safe and up to date. Staff offer transportation, parking for visitors, salon services like haircuts and styling, daily housekeeping, personal laundry with no extra fee, and move-in help for people who are changing from home or hospital. Rose Haven accepts Medicare and Medicaid and belongs to the Iowa Health Care Association and the Iowa Center for Assisted Living.

After sixty years, Rose Haven still aims to keep a home-like feeling, with staff who spend real time with residents, listen to their families, and try to learn what makes each person feel at ease and cared for, whether someone needs short-term rehab, memory care, or full-time nursing help, and they always work to create a place where people feel secure, respected, and included.
