    Compassionate care and welcoming community

I couldn't have made a better decision placing my mom at Sunrise of Overland Park. The staff are friendly, professional and responsive, caregivers show genuine compassion and excellent medical attention, the community is clean and welcoming, meals are plentiful and tasty, activities keep residents engaged, and the pet-friendly, homey atmosphere made the transition seamless - I'm very grateful and would happily recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Sunrise of Overland Park is frequently described as an attractive, recently remodeled community with a home-like aesthetic, multiple gathering spaces, and amenities such as underground parking, walking trails and pet-friendly policies. Families commonly praise the hospitality of front-desk and caregiving staff, the facility’s cleanliness in public areas, and several on-site services including nursing checks, podiatry, a beauty shop and attentive maintenance. The dining program receives consistent positive comment for fresh ingredients and menu variety, and many reviewers highlight strong move-in support, holiday programming and a welcoming social environment.

Care quality and staffing emerge as mixed. Numerous accounts describe genuinely compassionate, resident-focused caregivers and effective memory-care programming within the Garden Terrace unit, including active engagement and appropriate clinical oversight in some cases. However, reviewers also describe variability in day-to-day clinical practices: medication handling, bathing frequency, and follow-up after clinical events are areas of concern. Staffing shortages and high turnover are cited as contributors to inconsistent care continuity; this appears to be a major driver of divergent experiences across families. There are also allegations of privacy breaches and concerns following a resident’s death that underscore the importance of confirming clinical and communication protocols during a tour.

Dining and activities present a similar pattern: the kitchen is often praised for healthy, plentiful meals and a pleasant dining environment, yet some families note that the plate sometimes differs from the posted menu and chef turnover has affected consistency. The community maintains a full-time activities director with a broad calendar (bingo, crafts, memory-care activities and special events), but implementation can be inconsistent — families report planned events being canceled, limited off-site outings, and occasional low engagement or poorly attended activities.

Operationally, reviewers identify several persistent management-level issues. Billing transparency and unexpected ancillary charges (medication, equipment, care-level increases) are recurring concerns; families advise clarifying contract terms, ancillary fee policies and care-level change triggers before committing. Price increases and overall monthly cost are also highlighted as a constraint for many. Leadership stability appears variable: where executive leadership and long-tenured staff are in place, families note excellent coordination and communication; where turnover is higher, communication lapses and responsiveness issues are more apparent.

Facility logistics are generally favorable: many note comfortable common areas, multiple dining rooms, small-community scale (roughly 60 apartments), and good location. Constraints include limited studio availability at times, small apartment footprints in some layouts, and a lack of on-site medical-appointment transportation and fitness equipment. Cleanliness is usually commended for public spaces, but reviewers also raise specific sanitation and odor concerns in some private rooms and bathrooms, indicating inconsistent housekeeping standards in certain units.

Overall, Sunrise of Overland Park offers strong environmental and service-level features that many families find appealing — particularly when staffing and leadership are stable. However, variability in clinical practices, activity delivery, and billing transparency produce a broad range of experiences. Prospective residents and families would be well served to tour the community, ask targeted questions about staffing ratios, medication and bathing protocols, out-of-community transportation, activity cancellation policies, and detailed billing practices, and to seek references from current families in the specific unit they are considering (assisted living vs memory care).

    About Sunrise of Overland Park

Sunrise of Overland Park sits in a quiet spot near Interstate 35, so families can reach it easily, and it's both close to hospitals like Overland Park Regional and Olathe Medical Center while staying calm and private. The community has both indoor and outdoor common spaces including a sun porch, patio, bistro, private dining rooms, lounges, and wide walkways, where residents visit or join activities, and some apartments have kitchenettes for easy meals. Housing options include studio, one-bedroom, and two-room suites, and residents are welcome to bring their own furniture and favorite things, which helps each place feel more like home. The staff focus on helping people age in place; that means seniors can stay in their chosen apartment as their needs change over time, and they can use independent living, assisted living, memory care, nursing and rehab, adult day care, or home care services without moving away from the community.

Staff provide care day and night, offering help with bathing, dressing, grooming, and daily tasks, and they're trained to handle special health needs like assistance with wheelchairs, insulin injections, transfers using lifts, and memory support. There's a strong emphasis on memory care, with the Reminiscence Program and Terrace Club for those in early and later stages, and the memory care area is secure to protect residents who wander, using computerized alert systems and routines built around each person's habits. The team supports people who may have major behavior issues or need extra attention due to dementia or Alzheimer's, and they build personalized routines, encourage visits from therapists and doctors, and bring in home care.

Meals come three times a day and fit many diets, like gluten-free, low sodium, kosher, and low sugar, served in a dining room or in private spaces when needed. Staff help keep residents active with fitness classes, lifelong learning, art projects, pet-focused events, and live well programs, including plenty of trips, outings, and scheduled group activities set up to help people make friends and stay social. There's free transportation for outings and appointments, so getting to church, shopping, or doctor visits is simpler. The community also welcomes small pets, offers a beauty salon and barber services right inside, provides both devotional services onsite and offsite, and doesn't allow smoking indoors.

Residents get weekly housekeeping, laundry, and access to both indoor and outdoor areas, and there are albums of community events and activities to keep people connected. The facility lets seniors stay for short-term respite care after surgery or injury, or when caregivers need a break, and staff check in throughout the day and night to help as needed. Staff describe themselves as caring and competent, building kindness and close bonds with the residents, and the facility's long history-more than 35 years-shows a strong commitment to research-based care and honest support built on each person's needs. The Overland Park location also works with the SPCA, sometimes bringing in pets for adoption, which brings joy to many residents. For anyone needing a place with a small setting, a choice of care levels, help with daily life, and a friendly, supportive staff, Sunrise of Overland Park tries to make each resident feel at home while balancing safety, health, and independence.
