    Warm professional staff, clean homelike

I visited Saint Joseph's for my mom and was immediately welcomed by a warm front desk (Mimi was wonderful) and a thorough, informative tour from the director. Nurses, CNAs, aides, volunteers and the cleaning and kitchen teams were attentive, compassionate and professional - Jocelyn and Falice deserve special mention - and PT/OT/rehab were excellent. Clean, sunny, homelike atmosphere that made our family feel fortunate; competent, caring staff who actually enjoy their work.

    Summary of reviews

Saint Josephโ€™s Rehabilitation & Residence presents a mixed picture with clear strengths in clinical care and community engagement alongside operational gaps that families should consider. Many reviews emphasize a caring, professional clinical teamโ€”nurses, CNAs, therapists, and volunteersโ€”who are attentive, engaged in rehabilitation goals, and supportive during transitions for pre- and post-surgical patients. Admissions and front-desk interactions are frequently described as welcoming and efficient, and several accounts highlight successful rehab outcomes and a general atmosphere of compassion.

Staffing and responsiveness are recurring themes with divergent experiences. Positive accounts describe prompt problem resolution, attentive medication management, and staff who make residents comfortable; however, multiple reviewers described inconsistent staffing levels, including reliance on temporary/travel staff, and variability in staff conduct. Practical consequences cited include delayed call-bell responses and slower attention during urgent situations. There are also specific, serious individual concerns about discharge and transfer practices; these indicate potential gaps in discharge planning and transport safety that prospective residents and families should review with administration.

Dining and activities are generally seen as strengths with an active activities program (walking, crafts, social events) and a restaurant-style dining room that some families praised. Food quality is inconsistent in the reviews: several people complimented cooks and meals, while others requested more variety or critiqued specific meals. Rehabilitation services, including PT and OT, receive consistent positive mention for engagement and effectiveness.

Facility condition and management present mixed feedback. Many reviewers found common areas clean and well-kept, and infection-control supplies well maintained; conversely, some reviews point to uneven housekeeping, sanitation concerns in parts of the campus, unreliable laundry service, and underfunded maintenance. Specific infrastructure issues include an aging building, limited air conditioning in multiple rooms, and exterior litter management related to smoking areas. Management communication is described as excellent by some families and inconsistent by othersโ€”prospective families should evaluate leadership responsiveness and escalation processes during a visit. Overall, Saint Josephโ€™s offers strong clinical and rehabilitative capabilities and a supportive communal environment, but visitors should assess staffing consistency, transfer/discharge procedures, dining preferences, and specific room amenities during a tour.

About Saint Joseph's Rehabilitation & Residence

Saint Joseph's Rehabilitation & Residence sits in Maine and has stood for over 50 years as a non-profit center, now working under MaineHealth, with a focus on both short-term and long-term nursing care, skilled rehabilitation, memory care, and post-acute services, so residents get help for almost every need, and people pick this place for different reasons like recovering from a hospital stay, memory problems, or needing a place to live daily with full-time support. The facility keeps to a high compliance standard, regularly inspected, most recently in August 2024, and usually gets an A grade for following regulations, though reports do mention some deficiencies around rights, care plans, and pharmacy practices, and there was a recent change in ownership alongside a nurse turnover rate that's a fair bit higher than the state average, with staff numbers shifting between 128 and 175 employees, but nurse staffing levels are higher than most places with about 5.48 hours per patient each day and a constant commitment to medication safety and resident protections. Saint Joseph's has 170 certified beds, seeing around 97 residents most days, and offers services that range from personal care and long-term care to focused therapies like occupational, speech, and physical therapy, all aimed at rebuilding health and independence, with areas set aside for rehabilitation sessions and programs meant to support both physical and spiritual needs in a homelike setting. You'll find therapy and medical professionals on staff, with everyone from RNs, LPNs, and CNAs to therapy specialists, dieticians, and social workers, plus the support of a family and resident council, which helps shape daily life and feedback around the facility. They offer both hospice and respite care, palliative care, and pay special attention to pressure ulcer prevention, which marks them out, and accept Medicare and Medicaid, remaining open to all backgrounds and incomes, while donations help support the nonprofit mission. The place keeps all main areas wheelchair accessible and has onsite parking and restrooms visitors can use, and while it's not a continuing care retirement community, Saint Joseph's does focus on helping people recover, grow strong again, and feel comfortable in an environment that aims to treat every resident with respect and dignity, always keeping in mind the need for individualized care and keeping up with both state and federal care standards. Staff like Mr. Jonathan Dahms and Ms. Peggy Farrington help run things, and despite its A+ BBB rating and a recognition as one of Maine's top nursing homes, the administration openly shares about recent deficiencies and works toward continual improvement, so families and residents get a clear, straightforward view of facility strengths and current challenges.
