    Outstanding therapy and welcoming community

I'm very pleased with Sunrise of Columbia - outstanding on-site physical and occupational therapy, a full activities calendar, and a warm, social community. Staff are friendly, professional, and know residents by name; rooms are spacious, clean, and well-maintained, and the dining is excellent. Overall a welcoming, well-run place that felt like home to our family.

    Summary of reviews

Sunrise of Columbia is described by many families and visitors as a well-maintained, professionally run senior living community with a warm, home-like atmosphere. Common positives include a clean facility, attractive dining areas, apartment-style rooms, and a central location close to hospitals. The community offers housekeeping and staff laundry, 24-hour trained staff, and visible leadership presence; these operational features contribute to a broadly favorable first impression for many tour visitors and residents.

Care and staffing receive mixed but generally positive commentary. Numerous accounts highlight compassionate, attentive caregivers and experienced directors of nursing and admissions who engage with families and coordinate care. At the same time, reviewers signal operational variability: periodic staff turnover, inconsistent shift coverage, and delayed responses to call buttons or alerts have been described. Several reviewers also raised concerns about medication-administration consistency and communication about clinical needs. Families with higher-acuity or rapidly changing medical needs noted limitations in the facility’s ability to manage complex post-acute care, and one theme was that Sunrise may be better suited to stable assisted-living needs than intensive clinical care.

Dining, housekeeping, and therapy services are frequent strengths. The dining program is widely praised for quality, selection, and presentation, and many residents appreciate three meals a day plus outings and special events. Housekeeping and laundry services are noted as reliable, and onsite physical and occupational therapy is available. A minority of reviewers desired greater menu variety (for example, more fat-free options) or experienced occasional repetition in meals.

Activities and social programming are a clear emphasis: residents commonly report active, varied schedules including music, live entertainment, exercise classes, crafts, outings, and therapy-animal visits. Memory-care activities and a social focus are strengths for many, though some reviewers perceived a marked difference in ambiance and energy between assisted living and memory-care areas. There are also isolated accounts of cancelled or inconsistent programming, so activity continuity can vary depending on staffing and public-health restrictions.

Facility layout and amenities elicit both praise and critique. The grounds, common areas, and dining rooms are frequently described as attractive and comfortable, reinforcing a bed-and-breakfast or homey feel. Conversely, the building’s scale and long hallways were perceived as institutional by some, and a few reviewers mentioned ongoing renovations or areas that felt dated. A small number of operational incidents—for example, pest-control events or temporarily unavailable services like the beauty shop—were resolved in some cases but contribute to perceptions of occasional service gaps.

Management and cost considerations are recurrent decision factors. Several families commend the admissions staff and specific managers for informative tours and strong communication; others felt that marketing and sales presentations were not fully aligned with the day-to-day experience. Price is a consistent theme: many reviewers describe Sunrise of Columbia as a premium, higher-cost option with add-on fees, nontransparent charge structures, and deposits or move-in fees that require careful contract review. Prospective residents should request written, itemized fee schedules and clarify refund and level-of-care fee policies.

Overall, Sunrise of Columbia is frequently recommended for prospective residents seeking a well-appointed community with strong social programming, good dining, and a caring staff. Important considerations before committing are cost, fee transparency, the facility’s capacity to manage higher-acuity medical needs, and confirmation of reliable staffing and response times for a particular unit. An in-person tour, direct conversations with nursing leadership about medication and emergency-response protocols, and review of the contract’s fee and service terms are advised to align expectations with operational realities.

    About Sunrise of Columbia

Sunrise of Columbia offers several types of care, including independent living, assisted living, memory care in a specially designed building, nursing home care, and short-term respite stays, so people can stay as their needs change, and they don't have to move again just because they need more help; meals come with many dietary options, like gluten-free, low sugar, and low sodium, and folks can eat in a restaurant-style dining area, bring guests for meals, or use the private dining rooms if they want something quieter or more family-like, and there's even room service if someone doesn't feel like coming down, plus a coffee bar and piano in the assisted living dining room for a cozy, social atmosphere. There's both indoor and outdoor spaces with comfortable seating, pretty lawns, mature trees, and a well-kept walking path, as well as a sunroom with wicker chairs and big windows, and a shaded pergola if someone wants to enjoy the outdoors with friends or read a book in peace, and inside, plenty of sitting areas, fireplaces, a TV lounge, and a library make it easy to visit or just take it easy.

The building is built for safety, especially for memory care, so they use bracelets with alarms to help prevent wandering and keep residents secure if they try to leave the community, and the memory care area has a separate secured courtyard, activity rooms with art supplies, comfy seating, and soft lighting, plus a fireplace and an aquarium, so it feels calm and home-like. Nurses, doctors on call, and a team that includes RNs, LPNs, and specialized therapists for physical, speech, and occupational needs are all part of the daily routine, and there's always 24-hour staff around to provide help day or night, with everything from medication help-including medication care managers and medication technicians-to incontinence care, diabetic management with insulin shots, and support for people who may have troubling behaviors or a risk of elopement; residents can bring their cats or dogs if they have them, which can be comforting.

Sunrise of Columbia runs a busy activity calendar, so people can take part in stretching classes, yoga, Tai Chi, art classes, gardening, trivia, karaoke, day trips, Wii bowling, pet programs, educational talks, and even intergenerational and religious opportunities with visiting chaplains and rabbis. There's housekeeping, a beauty salon, transportation services-both free and at cost-Wi-Fi throughout, activity and common rooms to meet others or relax, and they accept people with all sorts of personal, medical, or behavioral needs, including those needing daily help with bathing, dressing, meals, or medicine.

Specialized caregiver training, hospice support, Dignity Home Care, and help with funding options like veterans benefits show they try to give families peace of mind and help people stay independent when they can, and there are many different apartment floor plans to choose from if someone's looking to move in. Whether someone needs just a little help or a whole team to care for them, Sunrise of Columbia seems set up to meet a wide variety of needs quietly and without fuss, letting folks enjoy their days as they see fit.
