    Comfortable community with caring staff

I'm very happy with my move here. The community is clean and beautifully landscaped, with convenient parking and well-equipped, comfortable apartments. Staff are warm, caring and responsive, dining is excellent with good variety and special-diet options, and the active social calendar, outings and on-campus continuum of care give me real peace of mind. I made friends quickly and would highly recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression The Willows Retirement Community is characterized by consistently positive feedback on day-to-day resident life, with particular strength in staff interactions, dining, activities, and an on‑campus continuum of care. Many families and residents describe the staff as compassionate, attentive, and welcoming from initial sales contact through ongoing care; front‑desk and dining teams receive frequent praise for warmth and professionalism. The community offers a full spectrum of services — independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing — with many reviewers noting smooth transitions between levels of care and accessible clinical/rehabilitation services.

Care quality and staff Care-related comments emphasize individualized attention and responsiveness: staff are credited with accommodating special needs (for example, dietary restrictions and mobility‑related equipment), providing timely health notifications, and supporting rehabilitation goals. Reviewers highlight effective therapy programs and clinical outcomes in short‑term rehab. At the same time, a subset of comments raises concerns about workplace‑treatment and morale among staff; prospective families may wish to ask about staff turnover, training, and internal communication practices during touring and contracting conversations.

Dining and activities Dining is a consistently strong feature. Reviewers describe restaurant‑style service, varied menus, nutritious meals, and accommodations for special diets, including special-event and holiday dining. The facility supports an active social calendar with clubs, crafts, performances, movies, religious services, gardening opportunities, and frequent trips. Residents and families frequently cite the breadth of programs and the social camaraderie those programs encourage, contributing to an intellectually and socially vibrant independent living environment.

Facilities and environment Physical plant and grounds receive positive marks for cleanliness, landscaping, snow removal, and accessible outdoor spaces. Apartments are noted for useful layouts (kitchens, laundry access, large closets, some with patios) and generally well‑maintained interiors. Several reviewers recommended updates in certain public areas; while the core living spaces and exterior grounds are well cared for, some common‑area finishes and aesthetics may be dated.

Management and operations Operational strengths include prompt maintenance responses for in‑unit needs and clear coordination of on‑campus services (therapy, hospice, home health options). Conversely, administrative and financial processes appear to be uneven: comments reference delays or difficulties in deposit/refund handling and sporadic gaps in customer‑service follow‑up. Communication with families is often good regarding health events and activities, but there are occasional lapses in administrative responsiveness that prospective residents should clarify up front (for example, contract terms, deposit policies, and billing procedures).

Notable patterns and guidance for prospective families The dominant pattern across feedback is positive: warm staff, strong dining, active programming, and a supportive community culture. However, important operational caveats appear repeatedly enough to merit attention: cost/affordability, parking availability, administrative responsiveness (especially around deposits and refunds), and questions about staff workplace treatment. Prospective residents and families should ask for written explanations of deposit/refund policies, inquire about recent or planned common‑area renovations, request turnover and staffing metrics, and verify parking and transportation options during their visit. These targeted questions will help balance the community’s clear strengths against the operational issues some reviewers experienced.

    About The Willows - Westborough

The Willows Retirement Community - SALMON Health and Retirement is a senior living community at 1 Lyman Street in Westborough, Massachusetts, and people have been describing it as a warm place where older adults can pick between independent living cottages, apartments, and assisted living, with skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and memory care also on campus, making it a full-service, continuing care retirement community that's been open since 1995. The Willows offers many types of help, so if someone wants to keep their independence, they can, but if they need extra care, they'll find support for daily routines, medication, special nursing, and even hospice. There are specialized services, like Tapestry Memory Care for folks with memory challenges, and plenty of home care options, whether it's for short-term recovery, long-term nursing, or respite care, with staff like nurses, Alzheimer's professionals, and aides working throughout the many buildings, though there have been some periods where finding enough staff was tough, but most visitors still give high marks to the people working there.

Residents live in apartments or cottages that are spacious and maintenance-free, with floor plans to pick from, kitchenettes in some places, and a choice of private or shared setups, all with cable TV, Wi-Fi, and phone, and they can change things like cabinets and flooring to suit their taste. Meals are a highlight, with an award-winning chef and meal planners making food in two dining rooms, and folks also have options for meal delivery, homemaker help, and companion services as needed. There's a bank, library, barbershop/salon, and even a day spa on-site; older adults spend time in book clubs, cooking groups, gardening in the rose and flower beds, or working in a woodworking shop, and people often mention the variety of activities, from fitness and exercise classes to trips, gardening, movie nights, and day trips out to the museums or stores.

Transportation, therapy, and home health care are available, and the community has adult day care and home care services through SALMON, so it's possible for residents to age in place. Some people still drive and are very active, like joining in on the gardening club, running the small convenience store, or leading groups. Outdoor areas, including a plant room and lots of flower beds, give residents open-air spaces, and there are accessible features throughout for people who have trouble getting around. Housekeeping and maintenance are all included, and there's a sense that most people can stay as independent as they like but also get personal care, exercise, or even just someone to spend time with if they're lonely.

Facilities like The Willows at Westborough are part of the wider SALMON Health and Retirement network, which aims to personalize care, and while no place is perfect or without its challenges, the reviews, including a recent 9.2 out of 10 for satisfaction, show many are glad to call it home.
