    Compassionate clean engaging memory care

I placed my mom in the memory care (Riverstone) and am very satisfied. The staff are compassionate, accessible, and attentive - they went above and beyond and even assigned a dedicated caregiver. The facility is clean, safe, nicely landscaped with outdoor activities, and the food and daily programs keep residents engaged. Overall it's a caring, efficient place where my mom is happy.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: American House Kentwood presents a mix of clear strengths and recurring operational concerns. Many families praised the bedside quality of care — caregivers are frequently described as compassionate, attentive, and accessible, with some residents assigned a dedicated caregiver and positive hospice support noted. The community offers private single-room apartments with half-baths, recent interior updates (new carpeting, bright finishes), well-kept landscaping, and outdoor programming during warmer months, which contribute to a generally pleasant, value-oriented living environment.

Care and staffing: Clinical and direct-care staff receive consistently positive comments for compassion and responsiveness, and several accounts describe staff who go above and beyond. At the same time, staffing stability appears uneven across accounts. Some families report steady, familiar teams while others cite frequent turnover and changes that coincide with communication gaps. A notable operational pattern is inconsistent follow-through on clinical incidents and family notification; this is an area families identified as needing clearer protocols and faster communication.

Dining and activities: Opinions about dining are mixed. Many residents enjoy the food and find meal options acceptable, but others describe inconsistent food temperature and uneven meal quality. The activity program is generally viewed as a positive element, with frequent offerings and outdoor activities in summer; however, memory-care programming is constrained by limited dedicated space and smaller activity options in that unit.

Facilities and layout: The community has benefited from recent cosmetic updates and is often described as clean and bright. At the same time, some areas appear dated and in need of additional maintenance (sticky doors, hallway wear), and there are variability and maintenance gaps reported across units. Apartment sizes are adequate for single occupancy but smaller than alternatives some families considered; certain room locations can create long walks to dining and common areas, which may be a concern for residents with limited mobility.

Management, admissions, and ownership: Several reviewers link operational inconsistencies to management turnover and an ownership transition, which appears to have affected communication and administrative continuity. Families also noted an assertive admissions and sales approach during tour and move-in interactions; prospective residents may want to be prepared for a proactive sales process and to verify financial and clinical details (fees, assessment, doctor-appointment arrangements) before committing.

Notable patterns and recommendations: For prospective residents and families, the strongest indicators of a good fit are the caregiving staff and the community’s outdoor and activity offerings. Key due-diligence items include: confirming current leadership and staffing stability, reviewing incident-notification protocols and fall-response procedures, sampling multiple meals at different times of day, touring the specific apartment and its route to dining, and discussing memory-care program scope if specialized services are needed. Overall, the facility provides several tangible benefits in care and value, paired with operational areas that warrant direct questions and verification during a visit.

    About American House Kentwood

American House Kentwood gives seniors a place to live where they've got independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and respite care all in one spot, so whether someone needs a little help, more serious care, or just wants a safe apartment, they can find it here, and there's a whole lot of options with apartments that range from studios to one-bedrooms, most of them having their own kitchens, bathrooms, closets, and thermostat control, with smoke detectors and emergency call systems in every unit, so families worry less. The beds are full-sized, and some apartments are meant for just living, and some offer more hands-on care, with caregivers specially trained for each need, and folks can age in place since there's hospice when it's needed, and support for Alzheimer's and dementia through the Love is Ageless memory care program, which includes things like sensory-based programming such as snoezelen rooms.

People spend their time in common areas that feel welcoming, with relaxing outdoor spots that have fountains, a gazebo, and a garden with raised beds-there's also walkways and an enclosed courtyard for safe walks-and you can find families visiting in those cozy areas. Indoors, some lounges carry a nautical theme, while others are set up for activities: there are meeting rooms, craft rooms, a computer lab, a library, and a community dining room that serves restaurant-style meals, with menus to fit special diets, and families can join in for guest meals. There's an activity director who makes sure the days are filled with exercises, card games, gardening, movies, birthday parties, and there's always something happening-from educational to social events-helping folks stay sharp and making sure no one sits alone all day.

Besides the usual, you find laundry and housekeeping every week, a beauty salon and barber shop, visitor restrooms, indoor mailboxes, parking, and high-speed Wi-Fi for residents, which helps people keep in touch with friends or watch a favorite show-free cable satellite TV, too. There's an on-site nurse, skilled nursing care, help with medications, staff for counseling, and continuing care resources, and the building itself has features like accessible showers, full tubs, and entry intercoms, so getting around is easier for folks with walkers or wheelchairs. The grounds stay tidy and well-kept, with places for outdoor sitting, and the staff try to make everyone feel welcome, focusing on kindness, joy, and giving each person attention.

Scheduled transportation takes residents shopping or to appointments, and there are religious services-including Catholic, Protestant, and chaplain visits-right on site. There are also special programs for caregiver training and management classes like CALD certification, so staff can give the right kind of support. American House Kentwood also supports short-term stays called respite care, helping people who are recovering from surgery or illness, or when caregivers at home need a rest.

No one says everything is perfect, but people find a lot to do, eat well, and get the help they need, whether it's help each day or only when needed, and the atmosphere stays friendly and safe.
