    Beautiful facility, compassionate effective rehabilitation

I placed a loved one here and have been very pleased. The building feels new and beautiful - spacious rooms, lots of windows, lovely views, spotlessly clean and easy parking. The caregiving team (CNAs and nurses, including Alex) was warm, professional and accommodating; rehab helped my family member go from wheelchair to walking and end-of-life care was compassionate. Activities and ministry (Janet singing hymns, supportive on-site pastor) made the place feel loving and lively, and the food/in-room dining was very good. I would use them again.

    Summary of reviews

Reviewer feedback presents a mixed but specific picture of Hastings Senior Health & Living Health Care Center. Many accounts describe strong, compassionate hands-on care from CNAs, nurses, and therapy teams, including successful short-term rehabilitation that restored mobility for some residents and attentive end-of-life support complemented by an on-site pastor and ministry-style outreach. The facility environment is often praised for cleanliness, pleasant dรฉcor, spacious rooms with natural light and views, easy parking, and frequent programming such as movies, arts and crafts, and musical activities.

At the same time, a number of operational concerns recur. There are multiple accounts of inconsistent medication administration and delays in pain management, along with questions about routine use of sleep medications; these items suggest gaps in medication processes and oversight. Staffing levels and responsiveness are also uneven: while some staff are described as highly attentive and accommodating, others are characterized as absent-minded or insufficient in number, which contributes to long waits for assistance in certain situations.

Dining is an area of clear variability. Several reviewers praised specific meals and in-room dining service, but others described limited menu variety, frequent repetition (for example, pasta-based lunches and light evening offerings), and a lack of substitution options. The physical plant also shows a split profile: parts of the facility are described as new or recently updated and well maintained, while other areas have worn furniture and shared rooms/bathrooms that may affect resident privacy and comfort.

Safety-related themes appear across reviews. Some accounts describe falls and transfer-related injuries and staff slip events, which indicate opportunities to strengthen transfer-safety practices, staffing for mobility assistance, and fall-prevention protocols. Communication and management transparency are additional areas of concern for some families; while some reviewers say issues were addressed promptly, others describe difficulties in obtaining satisfactory explanations or timely administrative responsiveness.

Overall, the facility demonstrates clear strengths in compassionate direct care, rehabilitation capability, spiritual support, cleanliness in many areas, and an active activities program. Prospective residents and families should weigh those strengths against reported inconsistencies in medication management, staffing and responsiveness, dining variety, and the presence of some older, shared accommodations. Asking targeted questions about staffing ratios, medication administration procedures, fall-prevention measures, room type options, and menu flexibility may help clarify whether the facilityโ€™s current operations align with individual needs and expectations.

About Hastings Senior Health & Living Health Care Center

Hastings Senior Health & Living Health Care Center sits at 930 16th St W in Hastings, MN, and folks around here know it's part of Cassia and Augustana Care, which helps explain why so many different care options exist under one roof. The building looks new and has a calm feel to it, with a bunch of bright, well-designed apartments-some fully furnished, all with their own bathrooms and kitchenettes, with telephone and WiFi, and emergency response systems for peace of mind, and some apartments even have air-conditioning and cable TV, which is handy for when people just want to relax. Residents can pick from Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, Skilled Nursing Long-Term Care, Skilled Nursing Short-Term Rehab, and even Hospice and Spiritual Care, so whether a person comes here for just a little extra help, more serious health needs, or even temporary rehab after a hospital stay, there's a team and program ready, and expert guidance for long-term care and family caregiving gets offered, too.

Staff at Hastings Senior Health & Living help people with things most folks need as they age, like bathing, dressing, medication management, moving around safely, and even harder things some can't do alone anymore, and there's healthcare staffing around, plus a nurse for around 12-16 hours a day, and 24-hour supervision and call system in every apartment. Meal services focus on using quality ingredients, with restaurant-style dining, room service if people need to stay in, and food made for all sorts of diets-people who have trouble eating certain things get help, too. The center runs community-sponsored daily activities, clubs, classes, and special day trips, plus there's a small library, a lounge for sitting, a community dining room, a fitness room and a gaming room, and outside, residents can use the scenic walking paths or relax in the garden. Folks can get haircuts or see the barber at the on-site beauty salon, and there's even a computer center if anyone wants to get online in a different spot.

Hastings Senior Health & Living Health Care Center helps people with memory problems, like Alzheimer's or dementia, using secure areas and special programs that hope to keep residents engaged with memory-enhancing activities. Many apartments come with safety and comfort in mind, which really helps those wanting to stay as independent as possible. There's transportation services-both community-run and help arranging rides for things like shopping or appointments-so people stay connected and get where they need to go. Housekeeping, linen service, and regular cleaning are all part of the package. The facility has leaders like Administrator Kim Szymanski and Housing Director Anna Amy making sure things run smoothly, which is good since the community stays pretty busy. People say the place is beautiful and welcoming, and both staff and residents often help newcomers feel comfortable. Many families feel supported through the center's spiritual care programs, and people looking for thoughtful, everyday support and a safe place to live tend to do well here, mostly because they get the care and company they need, which is probably why reviews are positive, though, like any place, it's not perfect for everyone, but it does offer a wide range of help for seniors.
