    Clean secure caring staff welcoming

I toured Encore at Maplewood and was impressed - clean, secure entrance, lovely lake/pond views and well-kept grounds. The staff are energetic, caring, and responsive (they even followed up after the tour), the apartments with kitchenettes are bright and homey, and my loved one enjoys the nutritious, family-style meals and daily activities. Move-in was smooth, the community feels warm and family-like, and I would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Care quality at Encore Assisted Living and Memory Care at Maplewood appears mixed. Many families describe compassionate, attentive aides and nursing staff who provide individualized, adaptive care and contribute to a family-like atmosphere. At the same time, recurring operational issues—notably inconsistent staffing levels, high turnover, and limited weekend clinical coverage—have contributed to delayed responses to call cords and other resident needs. There are multiple accounts indicating gaps in incontinence-related practices and lapses in sanitation processes, as well as isolated concerns about medication-management practices that prospective families should evaluate directly.

Staffing and management present a contrast: reviewers frequently praise young, energetic, and caring staff, an active activities director, and instances of nurses or managers going above and beyond. However, reviewers also describe variable staff competency, frequent personnel changes, and a new local manager with clinical responsibilities that may reflect organizational transition. Communication from management is another common theme—families report scheduling changes, difficulty reaching staff, inconsistent follow-through on concerns, and questions about billing transparency and refunds. Recent ownership or name-change references suggest there have been administrative transitions that could affect consistency of operations.

Dining and nutrition receive both positive and critical comments. Several families appreciate home-style meals, a pleasant dining area, and residents who enjoy the food. Others note a repetitive menu, lower-quality dessert options, and insufficient assistance at mealtimes for residents who need help eating or drinking; this combination can create a risk of inadequate intake for residents who require feeding support. Activity programming is generally seen as a strength, with a robust calendar, live music, intergenerational visits, and social opportunities that many residents enjoy, though some families noted limited outings and less outdoor access in certain units.

The physical plant is often described favorably: a clean, well-kept facility with secure entry, bright corner rooms, lake and wooded views, and a selection of studio and one-bedroom apartments, some with kitchenettes. At the same time, reviewers raised privacy and layout concerns in specific unit configurations (shared rooms with partial dividers, small apartments) and practical constraints such as limited resident parking and variable access to an outdoor environment.

Notable patterns to weigh when considering this community include the polarization between consistently praised frontline caregivers and recurring system-level failures (staffing shortages, response delays, communication and billing issues). Memory-care capability is uneven: while some families report compassionate dementia care and attentive management, others describe the memory-care unit as more institutional and insufficiently equipped for complex dementia behaviors. Prospective residents and families should confirm current staffing ratios, weekend clinical coverage, dementia-care protocols, medication-administration policies, incontinence procedures, recent ownership or management changes, and written billing/financial policies during an in-person visit. Observing mealtime assistance and the facility’s response time to call alerts during a tour may provide practical insight into day-to-day operations.

    About Encore at Maplewood

Encore Assisted Living and Memory Care at Maplewood sits in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, tucked into a quiet neighborhood with a view of a backyard pond, and it's a small community that keeps things personal, which helps people feel right at home. Residents can pick from semi-private or private studio apartments, and there are also some one-bedroom options, where you'll find carpeting, window treatments, emergency call systems, and private bathrooms in the studios. Cable TV comes standard, and the staff makes sure help's available for things like bathing, dressing, and keeping up with medicines, plus there's always someone on duty, day and night. Pets are allowed, though there are rules: no cats, no small dogs, and no big dogs either.

Meals are served in a community dining room with dietitian-approved choices, which include diabetic, low salt, vegetarian, and even options for guests who want to join a loved one at mealtime, and the dining area feels welcoming with a simple home-like charm. There's a garden patio with raised planters where folks can enjoy the outdoors if the weather's nice, and plenty of indoor spots like a cozy community room for social visits, relaxation, card games, and other activities. The place offers a beauty salon and spa on-site for anyone wanting a haircut or a little pampering. Transportation for errands or appointments is available both free and for a fee, and there's resident parking for those who drive.

Encore specializes in both assisted living and memory care, and the team customizes care plans for each person, working with families and healthcare providers when needed. Seniors with early, mid, or advanced Alzheimer's or other types of dementia get a lot of extra memory care, with programs focusing on brain health, daily routines, and security. You'll find full tubs and wheelchair-accessible showers for comfort and safety, and the building stays well monitored for everyone's peace of mind.

The community hosts religious services on-site, social activities, exercise classes, day trips, and educational events to help people stay connected and active, and short-term respite care is available for those whose family caregivers need a break. The place supports aging in place, offers hospice services when necessary, and lets residents remain as independent as possible while still having help close by. Reviews average 3.2 stars out of 6, and people remark on the supportive environment and caring staff who encourage social interaction and a sense of belonging. Financing and flexible payment options are available. Encore Assisted Living and Memory Care at Maplewood is part of the Encore Senior Living family, and it stands out for its attention to people dealing with Alzheimer's and dementia, its kind approach, and its comfortable, peaceful setting.
