    Kind attentive staff, excellent meals

I live here and have been very pleased - the staff are kind, attentive, and go above and beyond, knowing residents by name. Meals are excellent and varied, activities (music, cards, daily Mass, outings) are plentiful, and the PT/rehab team was outstanding. The apartments are lovely, clean, and bright with a courtyard/pond, transportation van, and long-term care options, all at good value. Warm, faith-centered, home-like community I happily recommend.

    Summary of reviews

Review feedback presents a mixed but consistent pattern: many families and residents describe warm, attentive caregivers, an active social program, and well‑kept communal spaces, while other accounts point to operational weaknesses that affect day‑to‑day reliability.

Care quality and staff: A strong theme is the presence of compassionate, long‑tenured nursing and caregiving staff who create a family‑like atmosphere and provide effective rehabilitation (PT/OT) for some residents. Several comments single out an activities director and assistants for improving resident engagement. At the same time, there are recurring concerns about inconsistent staffing levels, particularly during nights and after hours, which reviewers link to slow response times to call buttons, delays in medication administration, and lapses in assistance. There are also repeated observations about staff conduct (excessive personal device use) and uneven supervision, producing variable experiences depending on shift and personnel.

Dining and nutrition: Opinions about dining are polarized. Many reviews praise varied menus, included meal options, and a positive dining environment, while a contrasting set of accounts describes inconsistent meal preparation and failures to reliably accommodate special diets (for example, gluten‑free needs). Prospective residents should enquire specifically about current kitchen staffing, menu cycles, and formal processes for managing dietary restrictions.

Activities and community life: Activity offerings and faith‑based programming are consistently cited as strengths. Live music, weekly traditions, crafts, games, and religious services contribute to a sense of belonging for many residents. Organized transportation and outings add to the community’s social value. These elements are among the facility’s most frequently noted positive attributes.

Facilities and safety: The building and grounds are generally described as clean, with attractive common areas, an enclosed courtyard, and private apartment options that include in‑room bathrooms and scenic views. However, the facility is noted as older in parts and some areas would benefit from updates. Accessibility and fall‑prevention features are uneven; reviewers cite tight shared rooms for mobility devices and missing bathroom grab bars in some units. There are also specific cleanliness and linen‑management concerns, and a few accounts of device‑placement or equipment safety lapses that warrant direct inquiry during a tour.

Management, administration, and patterns to verify: Management is a polarizing topic. Positive accounts note conscientious leadership and good follow‑through, while negative accounts point to poor communication with families, administrative disorganization (including billing and misplaced personal items), and perceived lack of accountability when problems arise. After‑hours access and responsiveness is a recurring operational gap. These patterns suggest variability in how policies are applied across shifts and that prospective families should ask for concrete policies on incident reporting, family communication pathways, after‑hours coverage, dietary accommodations, laundry handling, and staffing ratios.

Bottom line: The community offers clear strengths in caregiving relationships, social programming, faith services, and attractive common areas. However, there are recurring operational issues around staffing consistency, communication, meal reliability, sanitation/linen management, and administrative follow‑through. Families considering this facility should arrange multiple visits at different times of day, request current staffing and incident‑response metrics, review dietary‑accommodation procedures, and obtain written policies regarding after‑hours access and property handling to ensure the community’s operational practices meet their expectations.

    About Benedictine

Cerenity Senior Care is managed by Benedictine.

Benedictine, established in 1985 by the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery in Duluth, Minnesota, has grown into one of the largest Catholic senior living organizations in the United States, operating over 35 communities across Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Missouri. With annual revenues reaching billion, approximately 5,000 employees, and over million of senior living assets under management, this faith-based nonprofit organization has experienced significant expansion from a single skilled nursing facility to a multi-state healthcare network through strategic acquisitions, partnerships, sponsorship transitions, and joint ventures.

Under the leadership of President and CEO Jerry Carley, who joined in 2018 bringing over 35 years of senior care experience, Benedictine has maintained its position as an industry leader while preserving its Catholic heritage and mission-driven focus. Carley's leadership has earned significant recognition, including being named to The Minnesota 500 as one of the state's most powerful executives (2018-2020) and designation as one of Minnesota's Most Influential Health Care Leaders by Minnesota Physician Magazine in 2020. His extensive background includes previous roles as president and CEO of CSJ Initiatives and service on LeadingAge Minnesota's board of directors, where he serves as Chair.

Benedictine's innovative memory care program exemplifies their commitment to specialized care through two distinct neighborhoods: Tabitha, named after Sister Tabitha who was the first woman to head a hospital setting, which serves residents with mild to moderate memory loss, and Pauline, honoring Sister Pauline who devoted her life to dementia care, providing specialized support for those with moderate to advanced dementia. These research-based programs employ best practices in dementia care, offering engaging activities, personalized care plans, and family integration support. The organization's comprehensive service continuum extends to Adult Day Programs in Duluth and Winona, providing daytime respite care with trained memory care staff, while facilities like Benedictine Minneapolis specialize in complex medical care including tracheostomy and ventilator support.

The organization's care philosophy centers on nurturing mind, body, and spirit, rooted in Benedictine values of Hospitality, Stewardship, Respect, and Justice. This holistic approach emphasizes listening with the "ear of the heart," creating welcoming environments where unique needs are respected and each person's spirituality is honored. Through comprehensive rehabilitation services, spiritual care programs led by Director of Spiritual Care Rev. J. Scott Cartwright, and purposeful recreation incorporating art, music therapy, and movement, Benedictine continues the healthcare ministry begun by the Benedictine Sisters over a century ago. Recent strategic decisions, including the 2024 transition of Benedictine Living Community-Wausau to The Ensign Group, demonstrate the organization's commitment to ensuring sustainable, high-quality care while adapting to evolving market dynamics and maintaining their mission of empowering older adults to live to their highest potential.
