    Spacious historic apartments, caring staff

I live at Corby Place and am very pleased overall. The historic, airy apartments are spacious and clean with great views; meals are restaurant-style (three a day, flexible menu) and housekeeping/laundry are included. The staff and 24/7 nursing team are caring and responsive, activities and outings keep me engaged, and transportation/amenities give me real peace of mind.

    Summary of reviews

Corby Place presents as a historically significant, full-service senior living option with a strong emphasis on community, meals, and daily programming. The facility is repeatedly described as clean, well-kept, and architecturally attractive, with large, open apartments, many offering river or downtown views and full kitchens. Shared amenities such as a rooftop/observation deck, courtyard, library, exercise space, and gathering areas contribute to an active social environment. Transportation services — a facility bus, appointment driver, and covered parking — are frequently cited as practical benefits for residents who want to remain engaged off-site.

Care and staffing receive mixed but largely positive characterizations. Numerous reviewers praise the staff as compassionate, familial, and willing to go beyond typical duties; leadership and long-tenured management are often noted as responsive, with an executive director and nursing presence available around the clock. The partnership with an on-site nursing service and ADL assistance packages supports residents with higher care needs. At the same time, there are persistent concerns about inconsistent staff responsiveness and conduct, including occasional reports of delayed assistance and family-communication shortfalls. More serious operational concerns raised by reviewers involve medication-management processes and incontinence-care practices; while these are not represented as universal, they indicate potential gaps in clinical consistency that prospective residents and families should review directly with the provider.

Dining and housekeeping are important strengths for many residents. Corby Place offers restaurant-style dining with three meals daily, flexible menu options, holiday menus, and table service; housekeeping and laundry services are commonly included, with an option to self-launder. Several reviewers highlight high-quality food, daily specials, and attentive kitchen staff. However, there are intermittent notes about variable meal quality and specific kitchen preparation issues, suggesting that meal consistency can fluctuate. Prospective residents should sample meals and inquire about kitchen staffing and quality-control procedures.

Activities and social programming are robust. The community provides a wide range of scheduled activities, crafts, live music, exercise classes, library groups, and outings that extend into evenings. Reviewers often describe a strong social fabric, regular resident input meetings, and opportunities for companionship and engagement. Management and activity staff are frequently commended for arranging outside trips and family-friendly events.

Facility-level considerations include the building’s age and ongoing renovation needs. While the historic architecture is frequently praised, reviewers also note areas that require modernization (carpet, elevator interiors, and general updating). Some reviewers raised security and access-control concerns and identified limited staff availability during night hours as an operational limitation. A small number of reviewers also pointed to additional charges for certain in-room services and variability in how extra services are handled.

Overall, Corby Place appears to offer many of the features families look for in a residential care setting: a welcoming community atmosphere, round-the-clock leadership and nursing presence, comprehensive meal and housekeeping services, and an active programming calendar. The most notable patterns to investigate further are operational consistency around clinical tasks (medication administration and incontinence care), staff responsiveness at certain times, and building-maintenance plans. Prospective residents should tour the facility, sample meals, review staffing ratios and clinical protocols, and ask about recent renovation and security-improvement timelines to assess fit for individual care needs.

    About Corby Place

Corby Place, now called Fountains Corby Place, sits in Saint Joseph, Missouri and fills a tall, 14-story historical building with 76 apartments, penthouses, and a mix of one- and two-bedroom layouts, offering large closets, self-regulating thermostats, and full kitchens in every unit, including modern conveniences like dishwashers, stoves, and refrigerators, and you'll even find bathtubs in the units, which some folks really appreciate, and there's natural light and airy rooms to help residents feel at home. Those who want to cook their own meals can do so, but there's also home-cooked dishes from a professional chef, with regular, kosher, or vegetarian meals, plus menu flexibility for different tastes, and room service is available when residents want a meal in their own space.

Corby Place tries to support a range of needs, so there's independent living for those who are active, assisted living for folks who want just a bit of extra help-like medicine reminders and help with showering, which a separate company handles-plus there's memory care and skilled nursing services for those needing higher levels of care, and there's hospice care, adult day services, and home health options, too. Residents can find devotion and spiritual care with visiting chaplains or priests, and there are devotional services on site, with support for Catholic, Jewish, Mormon/LDS, Protestant, and other faith traditions, so people can keep their own customs.

Fountains Corby Place has its own laundry, housekeeping, and maintenance staff to help keep everything clean, and there's a beauty shop, so residents can take care of haircuts or styling without going far, while the on-site library, activity areas, and both indoor and outdoor common rooms give people plenty of chances to socialize or find a quiet spot alone, and you'll find cable or satellite TV and strong Wi-Fi all throughout the place. They organize happy hours, holiday parties, day trips for shopping or sightseeing, theater outings, and regular transportation for doctor's visits. For folks who want to keep their minds active, they offer seminars, educational speakers, computer and cooking classes, and lifelong learning programs, as well as craft workshops, baking, exercise classes, wellness programs, and music or movie nights. The calendar's always got something on it, which makes it easy to feel part of a community, and those who want to be involved in shaping what goes on are encouraged to share their opinions and ideas.

The building has a unique history, with things like an elegant lobby trimmed with original marble and a fancy ceiling, a welcoming parlor for gathering, a formal dining room, two large penthouse suites on the 14th floor with great views, and even a ballroom way up top, where folks can look out on the city and the Missouri River from an observation deck, so there's plenty of opportunity for residents to feel connected to both each other and the surrounding neighborhood. Staff are available and try to be responsive and friendly, and safety steps were taken during the pandemic. Corby Place, along with neighboring communities like Chilton Place and Mainstreet Manor, is connected to the larger Sunrise Senior Living group, which operates several local communities and aims to help seniors retain independence when possible but also offers extra care and personalized help as needs change. Fountains Corby Place probably won't feel perfect to everybody, but it offers a good mix of independence, support, and community for seniors who want to stay active and connected.
