    Moved mom compassionate clean retirement

I moved my mom here and am very pleased-staff are friendly and compassionate (LaLa is wonderful), CNAs are responsive, and caregivers go the extra mile to make her day. The facility is clean with comfortable apartments and weekend entertainment; it's an excellent, family-supportive retirement community I gladly recommend.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Reviews present a mixed picture. Many families and residents describe a warm, clean facility with friendly frontline staff and individualized caregivers who are willing to go above and beyond. At the same time, a set of recurring operational concerns — particularly around clinical oversight, staffing consistency, and management practices — appears in the feedback and merits careful inquiry by prospective residents and families.

Care quality and clinical oversight: Positive comments highlight attentive CNAs and caregivers who provide meaningful day-to-day support and make residents' days better. However, reviews also indicate operational weaknesses in the facility's clinical systems: inconsistent staffing levels that affect continuity of care, gaps in medication administration controls and clinical oversight, and delays or inconsistencies in hospice and end-of-life coordination and observation. There are also concerns about how care plans are communicated and reviewed with families, which can undermine shared decision-making and follow-through. In a few cases reviewers raised serious conduct concerns that should prompt verification with licensing and regulatory records.

Staff and management: Many reviewers praised individual staff members for compassion, responsiveness, and helpfulness, and some named specific caregivers as exemplary. At the facility level, however, experiences vary: empathy and responsiveness are not uniform across shifts, and reviewers describe instances of unlicensed or substitute staff being used. Management-level complaints center on billing transparency, disputed charges, and perceived weaknesses in grievance resolution. Prospective families should ask the facility about staffing ratios, staff training and supervision, billing practices, and procedures for resolving family concerns.

Activities, facilities, and ancillary services: The physical environment is described as clean and welcoming, with a range of apartment options and a generally pleasant atmosphere. Weekend entertainment and organized activities exist and are appreciated by some residents, but other reviewers describe limited weekend engagement and would like more programming. Ancillary services show mixed performance: laundry and personal-item handling are a recurring operational problem noted by reviewers, while day-to-day navigation and front-desk assistance are often characterized as helpful.

Notable patterns and recommendations: The reviews suggest a polarized experience — strong interpersonal care from certain staff members alongside systemic process issues. Important areas for further inquiry include staffing consistency (including weekend and night coverage), medication-safety protocols, hospice and end-of-life coordination, laundry and personal-item procedures, care-plan review practices, and billing transparency. When touring or interviewing the facility, request written policies, ask to meet direct-care staff, review recent inspection reports, and obtain clear documentation on how the facility handles clinical incidents and family grievances.

    About Crowell Memorial Home

Crowell Memorial Home sits up on a hillside overlooking the Missouri River Valley and has been caring for area seniors since 1905, so it's got a long history and folks around here know about it, and it really tries to offer whatever kind of help someone might need as they age, whether that's independent living in apartments for people 55 and older where there's your own washer and dryer, and a dishwasher, or assisted living if you need a little help, all the way to skilled nursing, memory care, long-term care, or even hospice. The place is a stand-alone, nonprofit retirement home with a quiet, welcoming atmosphere, and they've got a bunch of different sizes of rooms and apartments, some with private bathrooms, all designed for wheelchairs if needed, so you've got roll-in showers, and the community has a mix of studio and one-bedroom places finished out in soft, neutral colors with wall-to-wall carpeting, which makes things comfortable and safe underfoot. There's 24-hour nursing, medication management, and an emergency call system in the apartments, plus security features like automatic door openers and sprinklers, which ease a lot of worries for families, and you get basic cable, housekeeping, laundry, and the upkeep of the building and property rolled right into the monthly fee for assisted living.

The whole setup encourages folks to join in on community-led social and educational programs, do recreational and devotional activities, or just relax in one of the cozy lounges-one with a two-way black marble fireplace-or maybe read in the sitting areas, or spend time in the beautifully landscaped courtyards on cushioned furniture, and there's local scheduled transportation if people want to get out and about. The three-story self-contained assisted living wing comes with its own apartment-style homes and a fireside lounge, and the dining room has comfortable space for meals, special parties, or even private gatherings, and there's an on-site beauty shop and barber, though those cost extra. The care team there includes RNs, LPNs, Nursing Assistants, RN Medicare Case Managers, Physical Therapists and Assistants, Occupational Therapists and Assistants, and Speech Language Pathologists who handle everything from nursing to help with therapy, and they've got a 13-bed Medicare and Rehabilitation Center that opened in 2014 for folks who need focused rehab or nurse care after an illness or injury, with a whole therapy gym, bath and spa area, and even a Healing Garden for a bit of peace and quiet.

Crowell Memorial Home says it serves everyone regardless of age, race, religion, gender, or anything else, and they have a range of care: independent living, assisted living, memory care, home care that's non-medical, adult day services, home health care if you qualify for Medicare, and hospice, so there's a lot of flexibility as a person's needs change over time, and whether someone's coming for a short-term rehab stay or moving in for long-term care, everyone gets a Resident Service Agreement made up for what fits them best. Housekeeping, maintenance, and laundry are all handled; folks have private rooms available; common areas have TV, internet, and nice places to relax; plus, they've been around for over a century, so they've been part of the community for quite a while.
