    Warm, social, kosher-friendly senior community

I moved my mom here and we're very pleased - she adjusted quickly and loves the lively, heimish atmosphere, many activities (guest speakers, crafts, outings) and kosher-friendly meals that encourage socializing. The staff - from aides to Shelly Ann - are caring, attentive and professional, made move-in seamless, and gave our family peace of mind. Apartments and common areas are clean, light and roomy, the grounds pleasant, and the nonprofit setting feels safe and welcoming; I'd recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Reviewers paint a mixed but detailed picture of Lester Senior Living. The facility receives frequent praise for its caregiving staff: many families describe aides and nursing personnel as compassionate, attentive, and personable, with several accounts of staff going beyond routine duties to support residents. The atmosphere is often characterized as welcoming and family-like; move-ins are frequently described as smooth, and respite/short-stay options are available for temporary needs.

Programming and social life are among the facility's clearer strengths. The activity schedule is robust, with guest speakers, cultural events, arts-and-crafts studios, gardening, choir performances and regular outings (including trips tied to the local JCC). Transportation for shopping and medical appointments is regularly available. Reviewers also note a lively resident community and amenities offsite — access to a nearby gym with a heated pool and trainers is commonly mentioned.

Dining and apartments show mixed signals. Positive comments include kosher-friendly options, pleasant meals for some residents, and several spacious, furnished two-bedroom apartments with in-unit laundry in certain units. However, operational limits on meal service are persistent: the kitchen commonly provides two meals per weekday with no weekend dinner service, and dinner hours are early in the evening. Food quality is described inconsistently across accounts, and some residents find one‑bedroom units cramped.

Facility condition and safety comments are variable. Updated public spaces, a renovated lobby, and pleasant grounds are highlighted, but other accounts point to maintenance variability and cleanliness issues in particular halls or units. Security concerns such as past burglaries and limited guest parking have been raised; prospective residents should confirm current security and parking arrangements.

Administration and operational management emerge as the area with the most divergence. Several reviews describe helpful, informative staff and smooth administrative interactions, while others report slow or nonresponsive communication, billing opacity (lack of itemized statements), and a perceived emphasis on occupancy. High staff turnover and leadership changes are referenced and correlate with reports of reduced program consistency in some periods. There is also an implied risk to residents who rely on Medicaid: the facility accepts little or no Medicaid and has limited Medicaid beds, raising the possibility of relocation if private funds are exhausted.

There is at least one serious clinical concern described in the reviews; while details vary, it underscores the importance of asking specific questions about medication administration protocols, clinical incident response, and family notification practices. Prospective residents and their families should verify current policies on Medicaid acceptance, meal schedules, staffing ratios and turnover, billing practices (including itemized statements), security measures, and recent maintenance or renovation work during an in-person tour. Touring at different times of day (meal service, activities) and speaking directly with current residents and families will help clarify whether the facility’s strengths align with the prospective resident’s priorities.

    About Lester Senior Living

Lester Senior Living sits on the Alex Aidekman Family Jewish Community Campus in Whippany, New Jersey, where the Jewish Community Housing Corporation runs the place and it serves people looking for independent living, assisted living, memory care, or respite care, so folks can find something for almost any need. The campus holds separate buildings for independent living and assisted living, and also has a secure wing for memory care, with apartments made for people with dementia or Alzheimer's, where certified caregivers help and person-centered care models focus on each person's needs, and safety features help keep residents secure. The independent living building, called Heller Independent Living, has modern, handicap-accessible apartments, some of which are upscale, and there are choices that work for people with lower incomes too, like 36 one-bedroom apartments for residents of low and moderate incomes and market-rate apartments, which means there's a mix of affordability and luxury, and Jewish residents can stick with kosher diets since meals follow religious guidelines made by trained chefs. The assisted living and memory care are right next door in the Weston Assisted Living Building, where 60 units of various types, including private rooms, support seniors who need help with meals, medication, or daily tasks, and nursing staff and wellness providers stay on-site around the clock. There's short-term respite care for those recovering from injuries or surgeries and everything runs on an all-inclusive pricing model, so folks know what to expect in terms of cost. The focus at Lester Senior Living stays on keeping everyone active and connected, with programs to help body, mind, and spirit, including activities like bridge club, chair yoga, university courses, and movies, and there's a virtual senior center too, plus clubs and unique dining options, and if residents have pets, the place is pet-friendly, but smoking isn't allowed inside. The grounds are made to be warm and friendly, and there's a secure courtyard, indoor common areas, and easy access to shopping and local things to do. The staff tries to make everyone comfortable and support independence while paying attention to care needs for all stages of senior living, whether that's someone who wants to live on their own with a busy social life or a person needing specialized memory services, and the policy supports LGBTQ rights as required by law. Lester Senior Living belongs to the not-for-profit community and partners with organizations like LeadingAge, with no pressure to buy or rent, and new residents can look for more information on the official website.
