The New York Armenian Home has served elderly Armenians for many years, and it has welcomed people who survived the 1915 genocide and people from the global Armenian community who want a familiar and caring place as they grow older. This is the only facility of its kind in New York and it's set in Flushing, Queens, at 13731 45th Avenue. The building was first a federal-style brick house bought in 1954 and later received many updates, with the home now preparing for a new twenty-story building that'll have 275 units, a curved glass look, balconies, and a circular driveway. It joined with the Armenian Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Jersey to keep serving the community. The association with the Armenian Welfare Association of New York and its nonprofit status stays strong.
Residents experience Armenian culture in their daily lives through the food, artwork, music, and events, and staff often greet everyone warmly in Armenian or English and sometimes Spanish or Russian, so people feel known and respected whether they're on Medicaid or not. Meals have an Armenian touch whenever possible, and staff try to seat residents together so people find friends, while administrators walk through the dining hall to check on comfort and happiness. Activities include bingo, arts and crafts, daily exercise, Armenian holiday celebrations, music, storytelling, spiritual programs, and outings to keep people active in mind and body.
The building supports up to seventy-nine people and acts as a home for those needing assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, independent living, respite care, long-term stays, and rehabilitation. Rooms are fully furnished with private bathrooms, kitchenettes, cable TV, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and an emergency call system. There's always someone from the staff on-site, with nurses and aides offering help around the clock with bathing, dressing, medication, transfers, diabetes care, and emotional support. Family and residents can depend on services like dentist and foot care, psychiatric visits, support with daily tasks, and special meal plans, including for allergies or diabetes.
Amenities include carpeted halls for card games, a beauty salon, fitness room, library, music and movie programs, a gaming room, computer center, spa and wellness space, community-operated transportation, and a garden with outdoor paths. Housekeeping, linen service, concierge, and move-in support keep things running smoothly. Residents and staff enjoy a home-like feeling because of the Armenian cultural decorations and familiar traditions, and there are always shared spaces, community events, and a garden where old friends meet or new friendships begin.
