    Caring experienced staff excellent therapies

I'm very pleased with this facility - the caring, experienced staff provide 24-hour support, coordinate doctor visits and ER needs, and offer top-notch therapy and respiratory programs. The campus is clean, welcoming and activity-filled (my mom loves the social scene and Zoom visits), admissions and administration are responsive, and overall I'd happily recommend this community for attentive, personalized elder care.

    Summary of reviews

Pembroke Center elicits strongly polarized impressions: many families and residents praise the compassion and dedication of bedside caregivers, the responsiveness of admissions staff, and a capable therapy and respiratory program, while others describe persistent operational shortcomings that affect daily care. Positive elements frequently cited include a strong social-work presence, active activities and social engagement opportunities (resident garden, entertainment, bingo), reliable technology for family connections, and examples of cohesive teamwork among staff. Several reviews also note helpful front-desk support, assistance with medical appointments, and ongoing facility renovations.

Care quality descriptions are mixed. Numerous accounts highlight attentive, comforting interactions from nurses and aides and effective therapy services that support rehabilitation and respiratory needs. At the same time, recurrent themes include slow responses to assistance requests, inconsistent hygiene and incontinence-care practices, and delays in obtaining necessary equipment or transport. A subset of reviewers raised clinical-safety concerns relating to IV care, medication handling, and follow-through after clinical events; these accounts suggest variability in clinical practice rather than uniformly poor care.

Staffing and management emerge as a central tension. Positive reports emphasize compassionate staff and responsive administration — including examples of 24/7 communication — while critical reports describe chronic understaffing, high turnover, and uneven supervisory oversight. These operational pressures are linked in reviews to longer wait times, inconsistent housekeeping, and variability in staff conduct and training. Families also described administrative challenges such as billing inconsistencies, phone access problems during off hours, and isolated allegations of property-handling and documentation errors that merit further inquiry.

Dining and activities are similarly mixed. The facility runs an active activities program and has been credited with preserving social engagement, even during COVID-19 via video chat. Meals receive variable feedback: some reviewers praised particular items and meal service, while others reported repeated dissatisfaction with meal quality and temperature. Prospective families should ask for current menus and recent meal-service evaluations.

Facility condition and operations show divergence across reports. Several reviewers describe clean, well-maintained areas and ongoing renovations; others cite sanitation and laundry-service inconsistencies, odor and pest-control concerns, and stained or poorly laundered clothing. Equipment and supply availability is described as intermittent in some accounts, contributing to delays in care delivery.

Notable patterns to consider: the facility demonstrates clear strengths in therapy services, social-work support, and individual caregiver compassion, but these strengths can be undermined by operational weaknesses tied to staffing, supervision, housekeeping, and administrative controls. Prospective residents and family members should arrange a multi-shift tour, review recent state inspection reports, inquire about current staffing ratios and turnover, ask for specifics on laundry/housekeeping and pest-control protocols, confirm escalation pathways and after-hours management, and request documentation on therapy and clinical-safety programs. Doing so will help determine whether the facility’s positive clinical and social resources are consistently delivered in day-to-day operations.

    About Pembroke Center

Pembroke Center sits about 10.8 miles outside Lumberton, North Carolina, and has 84 beds in its large facility right at 310 E Wardell Dr, Pembroke, NC 28372, so folks find plenty of room whether choosing a studio, suite, semi-private, share, or companion room, and every room has either a view, wheelchair accessible showers, or both, and everyone gets individual climate control in a fully air-conditioned space, which is important for comfort and health. The community is part of Genesis HealthCare and provides both nursing home care and assisted living, with extra support for high acuity and non-ambulatory needs, and it's licensed to provide incontinence care, memory care, dementia care, and specialized Alzheimer's care, plus things like IV therapy, colostomy services, and bariatric specialties, covering many health conditions and needs with personalized care plans made with residents' unique goals in mind. The nursing services include short-stay rehab, long-term care, orthopedic rehabilitation for joints or injuries, and skilled nursing supported by attending physicians, registered nurses, and even psychiatric services, and they handle wound care, medication management, pain control, and diagnostics like X-rays on site.

Staff helps with activities and everyday needs and is managed by Syreeta "Reeta" Parham, LNHA, who's got eight years as a licensed nursing home administrator and a Masters in Health Administration, and she makes sure the caregiver-to-senior ratio stays up to standard, so residents always get proper support, and there is a team for respiratory therapy, contract rehabilitation therapy, and companion care. Chef-prepared, nutritious meals are planned and served in a main dining room or in-room, and there are options for private dining with visiting family, along with a snack selection that changes from week to week, and seniors can participate in community devotional activities, fitness and activity rooms, gardens or courtyards, and comfortable lounge areas, so there's always a way to stay connected or independent, whatever suits the moment. Pembroke Center also has recreational services like beauty salon and barber, cable TV, wireless internet, and a smoke-free space, and staff take care of mail, newspaper delivery, and laundry, which helps families worry less.

Diagnostic services, case management, pharmaceutical help, and discharge planning all happen in house, and folks can count on extra comfort with the security alarm system, housekeeping, and 24-hour nursing for both urgent and planned needs, and pharmacy deliveries mean no one waits long for needed medicine. The community has a special private hospice room and offers both hospice and respite care, and brings in pet therapy and podiatry care, so health and quality of life keep going together. Pembroke Center stays busy with on-site or off-site activities, devotional events for spiritual needs, and transportation help when appointments come up. It's known for attention to cleanliness and safety, and follows health inspection rules. The nursing home section holds a 1-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, but the community itself is rated an average of 8 out of 10 and holds the highest score among four senior living communities in its city, which is something families often want to know.
