    Caring staff, beautiful clean home

I placed my mom here and I'm very pleased - the staff are caring, professional and treat residents like family. The residence is beautiful, clean and home-like with engaging activities, decent meals, on-site medical support and attentive memory care that gave us real peace of mind. Admissions and administration were responsive and the move was smooth; I would recommend this warm, safe community for assisted living or memory care.

    Summary of reviews

TerraBella Southport elicits strongly polarized impressions: many reviewers describe a warm, home-like community with compassionate staff and strong activity programming, while other accounts describe operational shortcomings that have a direct impact on daily care. The facility's strengths include a small, family-oriented atmosphere, attractive grounds with multiple patios and walking trails, and a visible emphasis on social engagement through art, gardening, holiday events, and group outings. Numerous families praised the staff for being caring and resident-focused, and several comments highlight on-site amenities such as a salon, private family dining areas, transportation services, and an in-house medical/nursing presence.

Care quality is perceived unevenly. Positive accounts emphasize attentive CNAs and RNs, individualized attention, effective memory-care teams, and smooth transitions for new residents. Conversely, other accounts point to delayed responses to care needs, inconsistent assistance with dining and personal items (glasses, hearing-aid batteries), and concerns about incontinence-care and fluid offering outside mealtime. These contrasting perspectives suggest that resident experience can vary depending on staffing levels, unit assignment, and time period.

Staffing and management patterns appear to be the central operational driver of both the positive and negative experiences. Many reviewers praised specific employees and described staff longevity and compassionate leadership; at the same time, multiple reviewers described chronic understaffing, slow call-bell response times, and aides who are overtasked. There are also recurring comments about variable professionalism among nursing leadership and occasional billing surprises or fee increases, which indicate inconsistencies in management communication and transparency.

Dining and housekeeping show similar variability. Several families noted appealing meals, holiday dinners, and reasonable portioning, while others described minimal meal offerings, lack of promised snacks, and dissatisfaction with food quality. Housekeeping and laundry services receive positive notes from some reviewers (weekly room cleaning, trash removal), but other accounts identify sanitation concerns in resident rooms, inconsistent housekeeping schedules, and maintenance issues such as poorly maintained windows and HVAC units.

Activities are a clear programmatic strength when implemented: the facility offers robust daily programming, art classes, gardening and potting activities, exercise and mind games, and organized excursions. However, activity access has been limited at times due to infection-control measures or staffing constraints, producing variability in residents' social engagement.

Facility amenities and layout are generally praised: tasteful seasonal décor, well-decorated common areas, private dining rooms, and appropriately sized gathering spaces for family events. Nonetheless, some resident accommodations are described as small—particularly double-occupancy rooms—and a handful of units were described as dark or cramped, indicating variability in room size and natural light across the building.

Notable patterns for family decision-making include: (1) TerraBella often provides strong social programming and a caring staff culture that many families value, (2) operational inconsistencies—especially around staffing, housekeeping, medication coordination, and communication—are the primary source of negative experiences, and (3) the facility does not provide higher-level skilled nursing care, which limits suitability for residents with more complex medical needs. Prospective residents and families should schedule an in-person visit focused on current staffing levels, unit-specific room condition, housekeeping routines, medication-management processes, and contract/billing terms to assess whether the facility's strengths align with their care priorities.

    About TerraBella Southport

TerraBella Southport sits over on E Leonard Street in Southport, North Carolina, and folks can find plenty of comforts without worrying about maintenance or chores, since the staff takes care of the home upkeep, weekly housekeeping, laundry, and even handles things like move-in coordination and package delivery, so residents can settle into their fully furnished apartments with little fuss, and they've got several layouts to pick from too, like Lighthouse, Garrison, Brunswick, and Mariner, each with a private bathroom. The setup is single-story, which means it's easier for people to get around, and every area is designed to welcome men and women who want independent living, assisted living, or need SHINE® Memory Care with a safe environment for those living with dementia or Alzheimer's, and the nurses and caregivers are ready around the clock, with onsite therapies like physical, speech, and occupational if someone needs extra help. They keep it non-smoking indoors everywhere-private rooms and public spaces both-so there's not any smoke drifting down the halls, and it's all pet-friendly too, so folks can bring their pets right along if they want, and there are walking paths, a covered patio, and places for gardening outside. For meals, everyone gets three a day, plus snacks, and it's all chef-prepared and served with tableside service in a shared dining area, and if anyone needs something special, the staff will do their best. There's help for daily activities like getting dressed, bathing, and taking medicine, and residents also get scheduled rides-free-to medical appointments or shopping, making things less of a hassle when you've got to get out and about. If someone needs respite, hospice, or even home care onsite, it's available, and visiting podiatrist and dentist services help people keep up with their regular health needs. The community calendar stays full with exercise classes, Bingo, arts and crafts, spiritual meetings, and live music, so people can choose to join in, and outings around town get planned pretty often, giving everyone a chance to stay active or enjoy something different each week. There's a library, a game room, clubhouse, and beauty salon and barber shop right in the community, and everyone can join in activities, join religious services onsite or off, and use the emergency call systems if they need quick help. TerraBella Southport keeps a focus on safety and health while providing spaces and programs so people can age in place with some peace of mind, whether they need a lot of care, just a little help, or mostly want to spend time with friends in a homelike setting. Residents get support with memory care, independent living, assisted living, nursing, and even skilled care for higher medical needs, so there are good options for changing health situations. Pets can live here, parking is on site for those who drive, and the staff has earned several community awards for their care, activities, and friendly attitude.
