    Excellent attentive clean community-focused care

I placed my mother here and have been very pleased. The staff are consistently friendly, kind, and professional-attentive when needed but respectful of residents' space-and the therapy and nursing care are outstanding. The facility is clean, bright, and community-focused with good food, regular activities and chapel services; visitors are welcomed and communication is clear.

    Summary of reviews

Fairlawn Retirement Community presents as a well-maintained, multi-level senior campus with a strong emphasis on rehabilitation and an active community life. Many accounts highlight the attractive, hotel-like short-term rehab rooms, a visible housekeeping effort, and a range of residential options (duplexes, independent apartments, assisted living and nursing). The site offers frequent chapel services, a varied activities calendar, and long-term residents who contribute to a stable, family-like community identity.

Clinical and caregiving strengths are commonly cited. Reviews consistently praise the physical, occupational and speech therapy teams for effective rehabilitation outcomes, and many families described hospice coordination and clear clinical explanations from individual nurses. Several reviewers emphasized compassionate day-to-day caregiving, warmth from staff, and helpful admission or entry processes that ease transitions. Communication channels such as Skype and proactive visitor assistance were noted as useful for family engagement.

At the same time, there are recurring operational concerns prospective residents should evaluate. Several accounts point to variability in nursing-home level clinical quality and attentiveness during some shifts, with reliance on agency staff contributing to inconsistency. Related themes include uneven staff responsiveness and tone in family interactions, and perceptions of limited oversight of contracted personnel. Reviewers also referenced gaps in how clinical incidents are handled and how follow-up communication with families is managed.

Facility-level tradeoffs are apparent across different housing types. While short-term rehab spaces are described as bright and spacious, some long-term units are characterized by small rooms, limited closet space and layouts that can make family visits feel crowded. Dining is generally regarded positively, but operational pressures such as staffing shortages (especially during heightened public-health periods) were mentioned as influencing day-to-day service. A small number of accounts raised concerns about infection-control or sanitation practices; these warrant direct inquiry during a visit.

For families considering Fairlawn, strengths to confirm include the quality of therapy services, availability of programs and the cleanliness of the specific unit being considered. Important questions to ask management during a tour include current staffing patterns (including use and oversight of agency staff), protocols for clinical-incident response and family notification, room dimensions and storage, and specific infection-control policies. Overall, Fairlawn appears to offer strong rehabilitation and a warm community environment, while also showing variability in some nursing-home–level operations that merit direct assessment by prospective residents and their families.

    About Fairlawn Retirement Community

Fairlawn Retirement Community provides a range of living options for seniors, including independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing care, memory care, outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation, and long-term care, and the community has served residents since 1964 under the guidance of a board of trustees, with roots in the vision of 11 Mennonite churches, so there's a faith-based but welcoming feeling, and over 400 seniors call Fairlawn home right now. The campus has well-kept grounds with patios and porches you can use to sit outside, plus a maintenance team takes care of appliances and responds quickly if anything needs replacing or fixing. Each home or apartment has its own washer and dryer, easy-access closets, chosen paint and flooring, and walk-in showers, making daily living a bit simpler, and the emergency call system covers each apartment with extra options like medical pendants for a one-time fee, which some folks find gives them peace of mind.

Fairlawn has independent living options like Fairlawn Village Duplexes, Haven Apartments, and Wyse Commons Apartments, as well as 49 income-based rental apartments for people aged 62 or older or for those with disabilities, and these affordable apartments come with all utilities covered except phone and internet, and applications require a $40 non-refundable fee and follow USDA rules for eligibility, so there may be a waiting list. In addition, Wyse Commons acts like a community hub where you can meet friends, use the indoor heated pool, walk the track, visit the library, have coffee at the cafe, play pool or ping pong, work out in the exercise room or weight room, and even do woodworking in the shop, and residents get access to all of these amenities.

For assisted living, Fairlawn provides private studios and 24 assisted living rooms, offering daily meals, weekly housekeeping, laundry, life enrichment programs, and transportation, and there's also a memory support neighborhood with space for 13 residents with mild to moderate dementia, built with a homelike setting including a country kitchen and back porch. Nursing and rehabilitative care includes both short-term and long-term stays, plus a 99-bed healthcare facility featuring memory care and 105 skilled beds in total-split into 13 memory care beds, 12 rehab beds, and 80 long-term care beds-so residents requiring extra help or therapy services get what they need. Extended stays and respite care are available, with private or semi-private rooms and a focus on daily activities.

The maintenance-free housing features high-quality appliances like glass top ranges, built-in microwaves, dishwashers, and refrigerators, while all areas, including the apartments, are tobacco smoke-free for those who are health conscious or sensitive. Meals come from either the Wyse Commons Cafe menu or a separate care center menu, depending on where you are on campus. The entire place is designed to help seniors stay close to their families, friends, faith, and the wider community, with a mission focused on promoting and enhancing the quality of life for every resident, and the community does accept Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance.
