    Caring professional staff improved mobility

I placed my husband here for rehab and I'm very pleased - the staff are caring, professional, and treated us like family. Therapy was excellent (mobility, speech and arm function improved), nursing was attentive and informative, and the facility is clean, welcoming, with good meals and engaging activities. I felt supported and would recommend their care.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews of The Laurels of Hillsboro present a mixed but distinct pattern: many families and residents praise the facility’s clinical rehabilitation strengths, housekeeping, and the personal attention provided by nurses, therapists, and some aides, while others describe operational shortcomings that warrant attention. The therapy department (physical and speech) is repeatedly credited with measurable mobility and functional improvements; reviewers frequently note one-on-one rehabilitation, engaging group therapy, and staff who make therapy feel purposeful rather than purely routine. Housekeeping and overall cleanliness are commonly described as good, and several families remarked on a pleasant, well-kept building and outdoor areas.

Care and staffing are areas of clear divergence. Numerous accounts commend skilled, compassionate nurses and nursing assistants who communicate well and support family involvement. At the same time, there are persistent concerns about inconsistent staffing levels — particularly night coverage and aide availability — that appear to affect timeliness of assistance and routine care. Linked to staffing fluctuations are reports of gaps in medication administration and clinical monitoring, and a subset of reviews raises safety-related issues such as fall-prevention practices and equipment placement. Several families described serious post-event concerns and questioned clinical follow-through in critical situations.

Dining and activities receive generally favorable comments with caveats. Many reviewers note improved meal quality and a wider variety of options; activity programming is described as busy and varied, including live music, bingo, and crafts that many residents enjoy. However, there are intermittent issues with meal delivery timing and adherence to individual dietary plans that families found problematic. Requests for dietary tracking or adjustments were not always handled to the family’s satisfaction.

Facility operations and family communication show both strengths and weaknesses. Admissions and isolation protocols were praised by several families for being smooth and for facilitating remote contact (phone, facetime, window visits). Conversely, reviewers also reported inconsistent communication and follow-through from management on billing, discharge planning, and incident updates. There are accounts of abrupt discharges, unclear notice around transitions, and concerns about property handling and missing personal items. A few reviews allege problematic handling of negative feedback and family access, which some families characterized as inappropriate moderation or exclusion.

Overall impression: The Laurels of Hillsboro demonstrates clear capabilities in rehabilitation, therapy, and creating a warm, family-like environment for many residents. Prospective residents and families should weigh these strengths against recurring operational themes: staffing consistency, medication and monitoring processes, safety protocols, dietary adherence, and discharge/billing transparency. When evaluating the facility, consider asking specific questions about nighttime staffing ratios, medication administration protocols, fall-prevention procedures, how dietary needs are tracked and enforced, the discharge-notice process, and policies for safeguarding personal property. In-person observation of therapy sessions, conversations with the nursing manager, and speaking with current families may help identify whether the facility’s day-to-day practices align with your expectations and care needs.

    About The Laurels of Hillsboro

The Laurels of Hillsboro sits in Hillsboro, Ohio, and carries a solid set of care options people usually look for in a nursing home, offering long- and short-term skilled nursing care as well as convalescent home services where you'll find lots of caregiving resources, so folks who need restorative psychological, social, respite, or hospice care can get that here too, and if someone's looking for short-term rehabilitation, they do that along with the usual day-to-day nursing care under the label of long-term care. Managed by Laurel Health Care Company and linked up with Ciena Healthcare since April 2000, this place has both private and semi-private accommodation, a beauty and barber shop for upkeep, and offers extra touches with optometry, podiatry, and dental services. You'll find daily housekeeping and laundry, which keeps the place tidy and comfortable, and they offer directions for in-person visits for families and friends. The staff helps people in more than one language, with English, Español, 中文, and others, making sure people from different backgrounds feel at home. Activities keep days interesting, including classes for crafts, cooking, beauty services, summer cookouts, celebrations, games, and even pet therapy, which some folks enjoy quite a bit. The facility's review score is 3.8 out of 22 posted reviews, and their nurse turnover rate stands better than average at 38.8% compared to the state's 51.0%-though nurse staffing sits under the state norm at 3.33 hours per resident daily. With 99 certified beds and an average of 86 residents each day, Trinity Health Plan helps them out on the insurance end. Inspection reports show The Laurels of Hillsboro has 18 total deficiencies, including ones where they didn't keep all areas free from accident hazards and had infection control issues, which is something to keep in mind when comparing options. Still, the facility gets attention for offering return-to-home ratios and clinical results that get called top-tier in some reports, though people should always look at the latest updates and state visits. Overall, The Laurels of Hillsboro provides solid everyday care with some unique service touches, but like most places, it's good to look at the facts and match them up with what someone actually needs.
