    Caring, family-like staff; excellent care

I had a very positive experience - caring, family-like staff who consistently went above and beyond, strong nursing and therapy, a clean, comfortable facility with good meals and activities, and easy communication; I would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews for Hickory Creek Nursing Center describe a facility with clear clinical strengths alongside notable operational challenges. On the positive side, numerous families and patients praised the frontline clinical team: nursing aides and nurses were frequently described as compassionate and attentive, and the physical/occupational therapy department received consistent high marks for helping residents regain function after surgery or illness. Several accounts emphasize effective post-surgical rehabilitation, prompt clinical follow-up, and staff who go beyond routine duties to support residents and families. Communication via phone and video conferencing was highlighted as a helpful aspect for families unable to visit in person.

Care and staffing present a mixed picture. Many reviewers praised bedside nursing and the day-to-day caregiving, describing a warm, family-like atmosphere and staff who create social connections for residents. At the same time, persistent concerns about inconsistent staffing levels emerged; reviewers linked shortages and turnover to variability in responsiveness and continuity of care. Some staff perspectives suggested a positive workplace culture, while others raised concerns about compensation and its impact on retention.

Dining and activities likewise drew mixed feedback. The activities program is frequently noted as engaging and beneficial for socialization, and several reviewers enjoyed home-style meal options. Counterbalancing that, other reviewers described inconsistent dining quality and dissatisfaction with menu offerings and meal experience, indicating variability in food service delivery.

Facility maintenance and cleanliness were recurring concerns. Several reviewers described sanitation issues, odor concerns, and delays in attending to incontinence care, in addition to cluttered or poorly maintained resident rooms that can present safety hazards. These accounts suggest uneven housekeeping and maintenance practices across the building rather than uniformly poor conditions.

Management and operational issues were another theme. Reviewers described an inconsistent leadership tone and variability in administrative responsiveness; some felt management prioritized financial considerations over care needs. There were also reports of restrictive visitation policies during infection-control events that complicated family access. A minority of reviews raised a serious allegation involving inappropriate exit restriction and police involvement; while not representative of the overall feedback, that claim is significant and underscores the importance of clarifying incident-handling protocols and family communication practices.

Overall, Hickory Creek demonstrates clear strengths in therapy, direct caregiving, and resident engagement activities, which many families found valuable. Prospective residents and families should weigh these care strengths against recurring operational concerns — especially staffing consistency, sanitation practices, dining variability, and leadership/communication — and are advised to tour the facility, inspect resident rooms and common areas, ask about current staffing levels and turnover, review sanitation and infection-control procedures, and seek clarification on visitation and incident-response policies before making a placement decision.

    About Hickory Creek Nursing Center

Hickory Creek Nursing Center sits at 51 E. 4th Street in The Plains, Ohio, and has served Athens County for over 30 years, so folks around here know they can count on the place for a wide mix of care including short-term and long-term nursing, post-acute care, rehab, respiratory care, behavioral health, and even hospice and respite services, all under one roof. Residents see friendly, joyful, and kind staff, who help create a welcoming environment, and that's been recognized by the Most Friendly Awards. Meals come from chefs and meal planners who make sure there's a good balance of nutrition and taste, with one or two hot meals each day included, and meal services stretch into both independent and assisted living parts of the center, so folks can enjoy food without much worry. You'll find strong programs for social, physical, mental, and emotional engagement, since activities are given as much weight as the care, and residents often tell how much they enjoy them, a reason for the Best Activities awards the center's picked up along with big titles like Best of Senior Living and Best of Senior Living All Star, which say a lot about the satisfaction and care here. Nursing staff offers round-the-clock care, and there's help for personal needs like dressing, bathing, housekeeping, and laundry, plus therapy-including physical, speech, and occupational therapies-which covers a wide range of health situations. There's memory care information available, and for families worried about finances, there are details on using Medicaid and Medicare for Alzheimer's or dementia care, since those costs add up. Hickory Creek's got a long history as a trusted provider with ties to the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, and you'll notice the place always tries to welcome new folks, whether they need a little support in their day-to-day, rehab after a hospital stay, or long-term care with a steady nurse at hand, and all that experience and support folds into the way they serve the people living there.
