    Attentive caring staff excellent care

I'm very pleased with the care my dad receives - attentive, professional, genuinely caring staff who treat residents like family. The facility is clean and well-kept, physicians communicate well, and my dad is healthier and more alert since moving in. There are engaging activities, good meals with dietary accommodations, transportation and pet-friendly policies, and the team is welcoming and responsive - I would recommend.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Hearth & Home at Van Wert presents as a well-maintained, resident-focused assisted living community with a consistently reported home-like atmosphere and a strong emphasis on social engagement. Reviewers commonly praise the caregiving team, facility cleanliness, and the variety of activities that contribute to a vibrant social environment. Several families described observable clinical improvements in residents following placement, which reviewers attributed to attentive nursing and physician oversight.

Care and staff: The facility is characterized by compassionate, patient, and professional caregiving staff and nursing personnel. Reviewers highlighted effective clinical management—families noted improvements such as weight gain and increased wakefulness—and described physicians and nurses as attentive and calming. At the same time, a pattern of staffing turnover and occasional inconsistencies in staff continuity was raised as an operational concern; this can affect perceived consistency of care and relationship continuity for some families.

Dining and dietary services: Dining is generally viewed positively, with the facility accommodating special diets and many residents enjoying meals. Dietary flexibility and responsiveness to special nutritional needs are strengths. There is some variability in meal quality perceptions—while many praised the food, a few described it as average—so meal experience may vary by shift or menu cycle.

Activities and social life: Hearth & Home offers a broad range of activities (painting, cornhole, board games, movie nights with popcorn, and more) and amenities such as courtyards and an on-site beauty shop. These offerings support a socially vibrant environment where residents form friendships and engage frequently. A minority of comments noted fewer activities for some residents, indicating that programming may not meet every individual's expectations or that availability can fluctuate.

Facilities and amenities: The building and grounds are frequently described as clean, well-kept, and homey, with secure premises and accessible outdoor spaces. The community supports pet visits and virtual connections with families, and it provides transportation to appointments. Unit availability appears to favor smaller studios; families seeking larger private units may encounter limited options.

Management and communication: Management receives mixed commentary. Several reviewers singled out an outstanding administrator and praised clear communication and responsiveness. Conversely, others described a ‘‘corporate’’ feeling or lapses in family communication, including occasional forgotten appointments or coordination gaps. These remarks suggest variability in administrative responsiveness and operational follow-through rather than a consistent, uniform pattern.

Cost and value: Some families described the community as pricey and noted recent price increases. Weighing cost against the generally strong reports of care, social programming, and facility quality will be important for prospective residents.

Notable patterns: Strengths center on attentive clinical care, a compassionate direct-care workforce, active social programming, and a clean, secure environment. Primary operational weaknesses to consider are inconsistent staffing continuity, occasional communication and appointment-coordination gaps, variable meal and activity experiences, and limited availability of larger units. Prospective residents and families should tour the community, ask about current staffing stability, activity schedules, meal planning, unit availability, and fee structures to determine fit and expectations.
