    Friendly compassionate staff, clean facility

I'm very pleased with the friendly, compassionate staff and therapy team-easy to work with, responsive, and reassuring under new ownership. The facility is clean and safe with good medical supervision (diabetes/heart care), language support, well-managed meals and hygiene, social activities and a Spanish TV channel; I'd like to see more group activities moving forward.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews present a mixed picture of Berwick Retirement Village, with distinct strengths alongside persistent operational concerns. Positive comments emphasize clinical supports such as hospice nursing, therapy services, and chronic-disease oversight (notably diabetes and cardiac care). Several families described compassionate, responsive caregivers, effective admissions and business-office processes, language support including Spanish programming, and generally clean resident rooms. Management responsiveness and recent changes in ownership or leadership were also cited as sources of improvement by some respondents.

Care quality shows variability across areas of service. End-of-life and hospice care were frequently praised, and the rehabilitation/therapy team received consistent positive mentions for progress and engagement. At the same time, reviewers raised substantive concerns about the facilityโ€™s capacity for dementia-specific care and behavioral management. There are also references to regulatory citations connected to care-quality issues; prospective families should review inspection history as part of their decision-making.

Staffing and responsiveness emerge as recurring themes. Positive accounts describe helpful, reassuring staff who prioritize resident safety, while other accounts indicate delayed responses to call buttons, inconsistent coverage at the reception/desk, and instances where family communication was limited or absent. These patterns suggest variability in shift staffing levels and front-line responsiveness that can affect day-to-day resident experience.

Dining and personal-care observations are likewise mixed. When systems function well, reviewers noted adequate meal service, assistance with personal hygiene, and accessible room amenities. Conversely, there are operational lapses reported around meal delivery continuity and follow-through (for example, meals or drinks not reaching residents), forgotten requests, and partial cleaning routines. These issues point to process and supervision gaps in food-service and housekeeping workflows rather than universal failures.

Social programming and facilities show strengths tempered by pandemic-era limitations. The facility offers social activities, television and Spanish-language options, and families would like expanded group engagement as restrictions ease. At the same time, reviewers noted that COVID-related constraints reduced group activities and that the programโ€™s scope may vary depending on staffing and infection-control policies.

Management and communications present a complex picture: some families described accessible, problem-solving leadership and tangible improvements under new ownership, while others experienced poor notification practices (for example, moves or clinical updates without family contact) and perceived inconsistencies between marketing materials and on-the-ground practice. Taken together with the cited regulatory issues, these observations suggest that management attention to communication protocols and operational standardization remains an important area for continued focus.

Overall, Berwick Retirement Village offers meaningful clinical strengthsโ€”particularly in hospice, therapy, and some chronic-care areasโ€”but also exhibits operational variability in staffing, communication, dining continuity, dementia-care capacity, and facility maintenance. Prospective residents and families should balance the facilityโ€™s clinical and language-support strengths against these operational concerns, tour the unit, ask for recent inspection reports, and clarify dementia-care capabilities and family-notification procedures before making placement decisions.

    About Berwick Retirement Village

Berwick Retirement Village is a community that gives several care options for seniors, offering independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing, so folks can stay in one place even if their needs change over time. The community has names like Nursing Homes I & II, Brookdale of Bloomsburg, and uses care programs like Berwick Home Health & Hospice, Berwick Rehabilitation Services, and Spark Rehab which tries to help people recover after hospital stays. Apartments and suites come with private bathrooms, air conditioning, wifi, cable, and sometimes even kitchenettes, while people can enjoy resort-style and comfortable shared spaces like dining rooms, fitness rooms, a renovated gym, outdoor patios, and a fireplace area, plus small things like a garden or library that always seem to come in handy. There are specialized programs for those living with memory loss or dementia in safe and supervised areas, and the focus is always on keeping folks secure with a 24-hour call system, emergency and ambulance services through Berwick Area Ambulance, and regular safety checks. Meals can be handled in restaurant-style settings and they honor special diets, while laundry, housekeeping, and help with daily tasks like bathing and getting dressed are all part of the deal, depending on what each person needs. Social life comes easy enough since they've got community-sponsored activities, planned day trips, fitness and game rooms, and a wellness center, and there's transportation for both medical appointments and errands out in town. People who need health care will find a long list of options right on site, including Action Health, Able Physical Therapy, Berwick Dental Arts, various optometry and audiology clinics, Beltone Hearing Aid Center, Care First Pharmacy, Dr. Ronald J. Avenia MD, Dr. David Ball DO PC, Atlas Therapeutic Massage, and chiropractors, and more. The community talks a lot about keeping people balanced and healthy, offering things like fall prevention, sleep studies at the Berwick Sleep Lab, and good counseling through Berwick Behavioral Health Services. The staff tries to make rooms feel like home, give attentive care, and help people heal when possible, especially with programs for fast recovery. Residents with difficult health challenges get round-the-clock medical care, including specialists, rehabilitation, and wound care, and memory care residents get special activities and support all day and night. The place is made for seniors who want a safe, easy place to live with as much help or independence as fits their needs, and they work to make it comfortable, secure, and as simple as they can.
