    Caring staff, activities, great food

I've lived here for years and I'm very happy - the caring, knowledgeable staff and family-like, friendly atmosphere make this a comfortable, upscale, well-kept haven. The day program and varied activities keep us engaged, the food is incredible, and the small apartments and convenient location near Wilson College are definite perks. Communication is good, there's a nice gift/thrift shop, and overall it feels like a great place to live and work.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews for Menno Haven–Penn Hall present a polarized picture in which longstanding positive aspects coexist with operational and cultural concerns. On the positive side, reviewers frequently highlight compassionate direct-care staff, knowledgeable clinical personnel, and a generally friendly, family-like atmosphere. Several comments emphasize strong meal quality, an attractive and well-kept facility inside and out, small apartment-style units, and active social programming including a robust day program. The site’s location near Wilson College, on-site gift and thrift shops, and opportunities for resident interaction are also noted as strengths that contribute to residents’ comfort and satisfaction over extended stays.

At the same time, multiple reviews raise facility-level concerns that prospective residents and families should evaluate. Staffing levels and workforce stability emerge as recurring issues: reviewers cite short staffing, variability in CNA and nurse performance, and uneven service levels. Related to staffing are gaps in care continuity, particularly after hospital discharge and during rehabilitative transitions; examples include missed or delayed therapy services following a return from inpatient care. Communication and courtesy toward families are described as inconsistent, and several reviewers reported heightened sensitivity around staff conduct, including allegations of favoritism and culturally insensitive behavior. Billing and transparency around additional charges were also mentioned as an area of concern for some families.

Facility condition and operations include both positives and drawbacks. The campus is described as attractive and well-maintained, with pleasant interior spaces and amenities, but ongoing construction has been noted to create navigation and accessibility challenges for some residents and visitors. Activity programming and social opportunities are generally seen as strengths, with reviewers praising varied offerings and good resident interaction. Management impressions are mixed: while some families report good communication and long-term satisfaction, others describe inadequate explanations after incidents and inconsistent responsiveness to family concerns.

Taken together, the pattern suggests that Menno Haven–Penn Hall can provide high-quality, comfortable long-term care and a strong social environment for many residents, particularly when staffing and communication are functioning well. At the same time, prospective residents and their families should investigate current staffing ratios, post-hospital rehabilitation handoffs, policies on staff conduct and cultural sensitivity, billing practices, and the status of on-site construction during a visit. Direct questions to management about therapy continuity, nurse/CNA training and supervision, family communication protocols, and expected timelines for construction-related accessibility improvements will help clarify whether the facility’s strengths align with an individual resident’s needs.
