    Kind staff, excellent care, amenities

I'm very pleased with this senior living community. The staff are kind, attentive and responsive, management feels like family, and my mother is happy - the modern, spotless apartments, delicious food, great pool and gym, varied activities (trips, book club, games) and effective rehab gave her improved wellbeing and us real peace of mind. Overall a very solid choice for quality care and an active, caring environment.

    Summary of reviews

Chestnut Ridge at Rodale elicits strongly mixed impressions from families and visitors. Several aspects of the campus are frequently praised: common areas and the lobby are described as welcoming, apartments and public spaces are often clean and recently updated, and on-site amenities (gym, pool, indoor store, and chapel) support an active lifestyle. The facility offers a broad schedule of social and recreational programming—book club, day trips, social games and other group activities—and many reviewers highlight the positive impact of structured activity and nutrition on residents' overall health and independence. Rehabilitation and therapy services are consistently identified as a strength, with some families noting accelerated progress compared with hospital timelines.

Care and staffing present the greatest variability. Many families report attentive, compassionate CNAs and nurses who provide good day-to-day care; others describe inconsistent nursing performance, slow response times to call bells, and irregular personal-care routines such as bathing. Understaffing and staff turnover are recurrent themes and are linked to longer waits for assistance, difficulties coordinating care, and gaps in supervision—particularly for residents with cognitive impairment. There are multiple accounts indicating weaknesses in medication oversight and clinical follow-up, as well as concerns following a resident's death that suggest families may want to review the facility's end-of-life processes directly.

Dining experiences are similarly mixed. Several reviewers praise the food as delicious and well-balanced, and note improvements in health due to better nutrition and medication management. At the same time, others report cold meals, inconsistent adherence to diabetic diets, and variability in meal-service reliability. Linen and clothing management emerges as an operational issue in a number of accounts, including labeling and timely changes, which contributes to family concern about routine care consistency.

Management and communication are described in both positive and negative terms. Some families find management responsive, family-oriented, and effective at coordinating events and family engagement. Conversely, other families describe disorganized administration, poor communication during admissions and discharges, and frustration with discharge planning. Perceptions that financial priorities influence operational decisions appear in reviews and may underlie some families' concerns about resourcing and staffing choices.

Facilities and infection-control practices receive favorable notes—cleanliness, recent updates, and screening protocols are appreciated—and the presence of pets, pleasant common spaces, and volunteer engagement contribute to a positive living environment for many residents. However, consistent patterns of understaffing, call-bell delays, variability in clinical and personal care, and supervision gaps for cognitively impaired residents are the operational weaknesses most likely to affect quality of life. Prospective residents and families should weigh the facility's strong therapy and activity offerings and pleasant physical environment against these variability concerns, and consider asking targeted questions about staffing ratios, dementia supervision practices, call-bell response metrics, dietary accommodations, linen/clothing procedures, and the facility's approach to family communication and discharge planning. If there are any serious individual incidents of concern, families may wish to seek documentation or regulatory records and raise those directly with facility leadership; there are also a small number of serious allegations that merit direct follow-up during tours and meetings with administrators.

    About Chestnut Ridge at Rodale

Chestnut Ridge at Rodale sits in Emmaus and stands out because it uses its own special names for rooms and services, so folks will notice right away that things have unique names and titles everywhere, which can help make the place feel like its own little community, and it's part of Phoebe Ministries too, which has a long history in senior care, but here they focus on wellness and give you a lot of choices depending on what you need like independent living, assisted living, memory support for Alzheimer's, short-term rehabilitation, and traditional skilled nursing, and they've got those big open-concept apartments that start at about 1,100 square feet and go up to 1,470-some with an extra den-plus they let you have a full-size kitchen, which is really nice if cooking's your thing, and you can pick from one-bedroom with a den, two-bedroom, or even two-bedroom with a den options, all in a retirement community for people age 60 and up.

You get all kinds of amenities like a pool, jacuzzi, gym, spa services for relaxing, outdoor patios and gardens for walking or gardening groups, on-site parking for residents, and special guest parking at mealtimes, and they say pets are allowed in some apartments, which is important for pet lovers, along with transportation included in the plan so you're not stuck if you don't drive, and the place runs on an all-inclusive pricing plan, so once that's set up you don't have to worry about surprise costs which is a relief for many, and they even do room service, housekeeping, on-site haircuts and barber visits, and special meals so if you have dietary needs you're not left out.

The social parts are good, with game nights, musical groups made up of residents, arts and crafts, book clubs, a gardening group, group yoga or chair yoga classes, and they do off-site trips for people who like to go out, and the community center has a café, a bank, library, woodworking shop, chapel for spiritual support, a swimming pool, and even a small convenience store, and security's covered with outdoor grounds being secured and emergency response systems in each apartment.

Healthcare covers a wide range of services with licensed nurses on-site, personal care if you need help bathing, dressing, taking medicine, or meal prep, and rehabilitation services for those coming back from procedures or illness, so you aren't left without care, and English is the main language everybody uses so there's no trouble communicating, and they seem to value people being as active as they want-offering massage therapy, wellness and fitness programs, and plenty of recreational activities both on and off site, with special attention to wellness and a sense of community, so it's a pretty complete place for anyone looking for either a lot of activity or a quieter retirement with support when needed.
