    Caring staff, compassionate caregivers, clean

I've had a wonderful experience here - caring, knowledgeable staff who took time to learn my father's preferences, compassionate and competent caregivers, and an exceptionally clean environment thanks to excellent housekeepers. My father is happy and healthy, and I highly recommend this community.

    Summary of reviews

The reviews present a mixed but distinct pattern: many families praise the facility for compassionate, person-centered caregiving and a clean physical environment, while a smaller set of accounts raise operational concerns that appear to affect continuity and responsiveness of care.

Care and staff: Multiple accounts emphasize competent, knowledgeable caregivers who take time to learn residents' preferences and provide attentive, compassionate service. Housekeeping and facility maintenance are consistently highlighted as strengths, contributing to an orderly, well-kept environment. At the same time, reviewers describe periods when staffing levels were thin, which they link to slower response times and lapses in timely attention. Several families expressed specific concerns about care coordination during end-of-life situations and about changes in direct-care personnel that appeared to affect continuity.

Dining and activities: Reviews do not provide a consistent picture of dining quality or the breadth of activity programming. There are positive remarks about residents being healthy and happy, but few concrete comments about menus, dietary accommodations, or activity schedules. Prospective residents should request current sample menus, activity calendars, and opportunities for observation during a visit to assess fit.

Facilities: The facility's cleanliness and upkeep are a clear strength in the available feedback. Housekeeping staff receive explicit praise for maintaining common areas and resident rooms. Beyond cleanliness, there is limited commentary on accessibility features, recreational spaces, or specific safety infrastructure; an on-site tour would clarify those operational details.

Management and notable patterns: There is a recurring theme of management decisions affecting staff stability. Some families described leadership actions that resulted in the departure of long-standing caregivers, and these changes were cited as contributing to turnover and potential disruptions in care. Communication between staff, management, and families was described as uneven โ€” positive in many day-to-day interactions but inconsistent when families sought explanations about staffing, care decisions, or end-of-life coordination. These patterns suggest the facility combines strong frontline caregiving and housekeeping with organizational pressures around staffing and leadership stability.

Recommendations: For families considering this facility, focus questions on current staffing ratios, typical staff tenure, end-of-life care protocols, recent turnover trends, and the facility's procedures for family communication and escalation. Schedule a visit to observe staffโ€“resident interactions, review the activity schedule and dining options, and ask for references from current families to better understand day-to-day consistency.

About Mahoning Valley Nursing and Re

Mahoning Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center sits at 397 Hemlock Dr in Lehighton, Pennsylvania, serving Carbon County and nearby communities, and folks will notice right away there's a quiet, peaceful setting there that helps people on their road to recovery or folks looking for long-term care, and you won't see the rooms or halls packed since they have private rooms for some long-term residents, along with up to 142 beds in total, and while 58 certified beds are open as of June 2025, they'll offer skilled nursing care with a focus on both short-term and long-term needs, so you'll find people recovering from surgeries alongside those who live there full time. The place offers medical, podiatry, and dental care, diabetes and incontinence support, and both medication management and daily help with bathing, dressing, transfers, and other activities of daily living, so there's hands-on help when you need it, and ordinary things like laundry and housekeeping are handled by the staff, so that's one less thing for families to worry about. There's a team of healthcare professionals working on each person's individualized care plan, and a 24-hour call system's in place for safety, and with 12-16 nurse hours each day along with all-day supervision, someone's around if there's an issue. People here can join in on weekly and daily activities, including outdoor programs, movie nights, music, arts and crafts, fitness groups, devotional gatherings, and special activities arranged by the Activities Department, plus they even help residents make video calls if their loved ones can't stop by. Meals are cooked by chefs and meal planners and served in the community dining room, with all-day dining and various options to help with allergies or diabetes, and people who need diabetic care or specialized diets can eat comfortably, and if you want a snack at an odd hour, the all-day approach works for those late-night hungers. There are common spaces like an activity room, a movie theater, a library, walking paths, and a fitness room, plus some spaces outdoors where you can sit or stroll, and in-room features include private bathrooms, cable TV, kitchenettes, telephones, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and furniture, so folks can settle in and feel a bit more at home. People looking into long-term care or short-term rehab might appreciate the physical, occupational, and speech therapy programs there, since recovery's never easy but you can get extra guidance. Family caregivers will find support groups and resources, and families can join the residents' council or get help coordinating a move. The business room, spa/wellness area, arts and game rooms, and parking and transportation help round out what's available, making it easier to settle into a routine, while residents who need non-ambulatory care won't be left out because there's experience and support for folks with mobility challenges. Mahoning Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center is a for-profit corporation, not part of a larger continuing care community, and accepts both Medicaid and Medicare, and for people comparing nursing homes, the average rating is 4.0 from 10 reviews, which may help when sorting through options.
