    Home-like facility with caring staff

I'm very pleased with this home-like facility - the staff are caring, attentive and accommodating, rooms and grounds are spotless, meals are good, and there are plenty of activities plus a chapel and safe courtyard. I feel confident leaving my loved one here and would recommend it as a strong alternative to a nursing home.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: St John's Residential Care Home presents as a small, home-like facility with a highly praised caregiving team and clinical coverage. Many families describe the staff as compassionate, attentive, and willing to engage residents personally; reviewers often highlight a favorable staff-to-resident ratio, nurses on duty across shifts, and a family-style approach to care planning. The facility's scale — frequently cited as a five- to six-resident setting — creates a residential atmosphere that many residents and families find reassuring.

Care and staff: Reviewers consistently praise the warmth and responsiveness of direct-care staff and note examples of personalized attention, timely clinical care, and involvement in treatment decisions. Skilled-nursing capability and three-shift nursing coverage are identified as operational strengths. That said, several accounts point to variability in staff training and consistency: while some caregivers are described as excellent, others are seen as needing additional training or clearer communication standards. Communication with nursing staff and phone accessibility are recurring operational concerns for families who want regular updates.

Dining and nutrition: Food quality is commonly described positively — reviewers mention appealing meals, good portions, and pleasant kitchen aromas. Conversely, there are repeated complaints about limited menu choice, a single or set-menu approach, and inconsistent availability of fresh fruits and vegetables. Meal-timing and service practices are noted as informal in some accounts, which may affect residents seeking structured mealtimes or varied dining options.

Activities and engagement: Feedback on activities is mixed. Many reviewers describe a range of activities and frequent, personalized one-on-one engagement; others report few group activities, boredom, or constrained programming tied to budget or pricing. For residents with sensory or visual impairments, some activities may be less accessible unless individualized. Prospective residents should clarify the facility's current activity calendar and any additional fees that support programming.

Facility and environment: The property features several positive amenities, including an inner courtyard with secure outdoor access, a park-like backyard with plantings and a fountain, and an on-site chapel with daily Mass. Many reviewers find the premises clean and well maintained; however, others raise cleanliness and odor-control concerns, and there are comments about decorations left up beyond expected periods. Physical layout is intimate but compact: reviewers note small, sometimes shared rooms, shared bathrooms, and limited common-area space, which may not suit residents who require private rooms or more expansive communal areas.

Specialty care and suitability: The facility does not appear optimized for residents with moderate-to-advanced cognitive impairment. Several reviewers explicitly state that staff are not trained for Alzheimer’s/memory care and that the home is not set up for memory-specific programming. For families seeking specialized dementia care, a different setting may be more appropriate. The home may be a better fit for residents who prefer a small, privately funded, homelike environment with skilled nursing support and personalized attention.

Management and patterns: Management and owner involvement earn positive remarks for accommodation and family collaboration in many accounts, but operational weaknesses — notably inconsistent communication, phone responsiveness, and variable staff training — recur across reviews. Cost or funding structure is mentioned as a factor limiting some activities; prospective residents should ask about what services are included in fees and which require additional payment.

Bottom line: St John's offers strengths in individualized, compassionate caregiving, skilled nursing coverage, and a small, home-like environment with pleasant outdoor spaces and an on-site chapel. However, prospective residents and families should evaluate the facility's fit carefully if they need dementia-specific programming, greater dining variety, guaranteed private rooms, or a more robust and consistently staffed activity program. Confirm current staffing patterns, activity schedules, meal policies, and communication protocols during an in-person tour.
