    Attentive staff and great rehab

My mom stayed at Hico Nursing for three years and I'm very satisfied - the staff and therapists were kind, patient, well-trained, and kept our family informed. Her rehab (including a focused 6-week therapy plan) and my husband's 21-day stay showed real progress; rooms were private, clean, comfortable, and the food was good. I would recommend their attentive, caring team.

    Summary of reviews

Hico Nursing and Rehabilitation presents a mixed profile. Many accounts emphasize strong hands-on care from nursing and therapy teams: reviewers repeatedly note courteous, patient-oriented frontline staff and therapists who are trained and certified. Short-term rehabilitation stays are frequently described as effective, with structured morning and afternoon therapy sessions and observable progress during 2–6 week stays. Several families highlighted clean, private rooms with adequate space and generally satisfactory food quality.

Despite those strengths, there are consistent operational concerns that affect the overall experience. Administrative functions — including call handling, family communication at the administrative level, and payroll/compensation processes — are described as unreliable. Reviewers describe dropped or unanswered calls and difficulty getting timely responses from the facility’s administrative channels. Payroll errors and perceived undercompensation are mentioned and appear to contribute to staff morale and workplace conduct issues.

Care quality appears uneven. While many reviewers praise individual caregivers and therapists for responsiveness and therapeutic progress, other accounts describe delays in responsiveness, unhelpful interactions, and inconsistent follow-through by some staff. This variability suggests the facility can deliver good clinical care, but consistency depends on staffing and supervisory effectiveness.

Facilities and daily life receive both positive and negative notes. Private rooms are generally characterized as clean and roomy with functioning climate control, and activities that promote mobility and engagement are present. However, some accounts raise concerns about temperature regulation in rooms and hallways as well as limited availability of snacks or on-demand nourishment for residents.

Management and organizational culture are recurring themes. Descriptors such as profit-driven ownership and a challenging managerial environment appear alongside praise for frontline employees, creating a pattern where direct-care staff performance is a strength and administrative/leadership practices are a weakness. These operational issues—if accurate—can impact staff stability and the consistency of resident care.

For prospective residents and families: Hico demonstrates clear strengths in rehabilitation therapy, individual caregiver compassion, and basic room standards. At the same time, inquire specifically about administrative responsiveness, temperature-control systems, snack/personal-care policies, and recent staff turnover or payroll practices to assess how management-level issues may affect day-to-day care consistency.

    About Hico Nursing and Rehabilitation

Hico Nursing And Rehabilitation in Hico, TX, keeps its doors open around the clock to give continuous care, and you can find staff on hand at all times with a nurse staffing level of about 3.10 hours per resident each day, though they've had a nurse turnover rate of 72.2%. The facility has 80 certified beds and provides both short-term rehab and long-term nursing services, with a focus on rehabilitation for physical, occupational, and speech needs, as well as memory care for residents who require it-the place has specialized therapists and care plans made for each person, though they've had some deficiencies in care plan timing and communication. This home works with in-house doctors, registered dietitians, respiratory therapists, and consultants like pharmacists, and supports residents with wound care, IV therapy, nutritional help, and even psychiatric and counseling services. Residents have help with daily living activities if they need it, and there's a strong effort to keep things homelike and welcoming, offering daily activities, social gatherings, religious services, family outings, and transportation, all intended to make life feel fuller and more enjoyable, and even with some infection-related and care plan deficiencies from inspections, the facility stays committed to patient-centered care and has past accreditations for quality service. The management is handled by Coryell County Memorial Hospital Authority and Ticknor Enterprises Hico, LLC since April 2022, and while ownership details aren't clear, it's a for-profit partnership that's been part of the community's health history for years, supporting people with assisted living, hospice, respite care, and memory care, all in a place that's both structured and nurturing to support wellness and independence as much as possible.
