    Kind staff and clean home

I moved my mom to this United Methodist senior community in Virginia and we're very pleased. The staff - especially Amete and Lynette - are kind, professional and truly go above and beyond; caregivers know residents by name and are quick to respond. Her renovated one-bedroom feels homey and clean, meals are tasty, and there's a lively schedule of activities, outings, salon and fitness options; overall the care, atmosphere and value brought our family real relief and I'd recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

The View Alexandria by Goodwin Living is consistently described as a well-appointed, recently renovated nonprofit campus with a broad range of amenities and services. Positive comments emphasize renovated apartments and common areas, spacious floor plans with kitchenettes, attractive dining rooms, salon and fitness/recreation spaces, and well-kept grounds. The community offers multiple dining venues, a restaurant-style menu, frequent newsletter communications, and a long list of activities and outings (classes, concerts, museum trips, and on-site programming). Families frequently cite strong move-in support, helpful tour staff, and low staff turnover as operational strengths.

Staffing and frontline caregiving are commonly identified as strengths: many families describe compassionate, attentive caregivers who know residents by name and respond quickly to acute events. The community also has on-site medical oversight and is noted for rapid recognition of serious illness and timely hospital transfers in some cases. Maintenance, groundskeeping, and many aspects of hospitality service are also praised.

At the same time, reviews indicate variability in clinical and operational performance that prospective families should assess carefully. Several descriptions point to inconsistent clinical care quality between units, with particular concerns about dementia-specific supports, separation of memory-care needs from general assisted-living populations, and management of catheters and incontinence supplies. These concerns suggest the facility may not uniformly meet higher-level skilled- or memory-care needs without careful program placement and oversight. There are also mentions of subcontracted therapies and variable responsiveness from those vendors.

Dining and housekeeping are strong for many residents but inconsistent for others. While the menu is often described as balanced and appealing, multiple reviewers commented on cold or tepid meal service and uneven food quality. Cleanliness and odor-management are generally acceptable in much of the building, but a subset of comments describe sanitation and odor concerns in specific areas or units; this points to uneven implementation of housekeeping protocols across the campus.

Administrative and communication issues appear intermittently in reviews. Positive notes about helpful admissions staff and clear move-in guidance coexist with accounts of administrative lapses during transitions, inconsistent family communication, and occasional customer-service tone problems at the leadership level. Cost is another recurring theme: the community’s pricing and buy-in structure are acceptable to some families but seen as high or poor value by others.

Actionable considerations for prospects: visit during a mealtime to observe dining service and resident assistance levels; ask for specifics about memory-care programming, population mix, and whether there is a dedicated memory-care unit or cohorting; request written policies on catheter and incontinence management and examples of recent quality audits; review staffing ratios for evenings/weekends and subcontractor arrangements for therapy; and confirm contract terms, deposits, and ongoing fee structures. Overall, The View Alexandria offers an attractive physical environment and many strong service elements, but operational variability in clinical care, dining execution, sanitation consistency, and administration suggests a thorough in-person evaluation and targeted questions are advisable for families with higher-care needs.

About The View Alexandria by Goodwin Living

The View Alexandria by Goodwin Living stands on a seven-acre campus at 5000 Fairbanks Avenue in Alexandria, VA, and it has a long connection with Goodwin Living, offering many kinds of care for seniors, whether you need independent living, assisted living, or memory care due to things like Alzheimer's or other dementia. Folks who live here can pick from studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom apartments, and there's a planned expansion with two new apartment towers and up to 257 senior units, which means more people will have a place to call home. The community gives access to a heated swimming pool, walking paths, a restaurant-style dining room, a game room, a library, a chapel, and a fitness room, along with handy services like weekly housekeeping, linen service, personal laundry, and transportation to appointments.

The staff helps with medication, bathing, dressing, and grooming, and they pay special attention to what each person needs, so residents can stay as independent as possible. There's long-term nursing support with private suites-22 beds for people who need ongoing care-and they work hard to keep everyone connected with therapy, music therapy, light therapy, and aromatherapy to boost mood, help memory, and make the space calmer. Residents also have social programs and access to technology, with lots of ways to stay engaged with activities and staff, and visitors are welcome because family is important here. The dining team makes healthy meals for all kinds of diets, and there's always a focus on well-being, both physical and mental.

The View Alexandria by Goodwin Living gives seniors a lot of resources, like a library full of articles, guides, and videos, and there are connections to veteran services, legal help, insurance information, and community events. Goodwin Living runs the place, and there's even more help for people who live outside the community, including services for elder abuse prevention, fall prevention, hospice, home safety, disability support, and a giant directory of programs and benefits. The care team builds custom plans depending on each resident's needs, and they keep everything organized with reminders for appointments, transportation, and other support. People with pets can bring them, and each apartment has Wi-Fi and high-speed internet. The campus has won awards for meals, friendly staff, and activities, but its focus stays on simple living, safety, and making sure older adults have the help they need, when they need it.
