    Caring staff, proactive therapy, clean

I had a family member at this facility and was impressed by the caring, dedicated staff - especially Nursing Director Mrs. Davis and the proactive therapy teams - who delivered clear rehab progress, effective wound and pain care, and treated us like family. New management has brought positive changes, administration is attentive, and the building is clean (big thanks to Pamela Mills). I'm very pleased and would recommend this facility.

    Summary of reviews

The reviews present a strongly polarized picture of care at Greenbrier Regional Medical Center. Many reviewers praise individual caregivers and clinical teams, while an overlapping set of concerns points to systemic operational weaknesses. Positive feedback centers on compassionate direct-care staff, a visible and appreciated nursing leadership presence, and a robust rehabilitation program including physical, occupational and speech therapy. Families frequently called out helpful front-desk personnel, attentive certified nursing assistants, supportive social work involvement, and kitchen or custodial staff members who went beyond expectations.

Conversely, a consistent theme is variability in daily care. Reviewers describe unpredictable staff responsiveness, long call-light delays, and apparent staffing shortages that affect routine tasks such as hygiene assistance and linen changes. These operational gaps extend to sanitation and pest-control concerns in some areas, inconsistencies in meal quality and meal-service continuity, and problems managing incontinence care and timely personal care activities. Several accounts also highlight deficiencies in medication handling and documentation, which reviewers connected to missed or delayed doses and transcription errors.

Safety and transitions are recurring areas of concern. Multiple reviews identified fall-risk management and transfer practices as needing improvement, together with delays in emergency escalation or inconsistent use of emergency services. Discharge planning and transportation coordination were often described as inadequate, placing extra burden on families during transitions home. Reviewers also raised issues with personal-belongings management, delayed equipment delivery for home transitions, and uneven incident reporting and grievance resolution, which contributes to family frustration.

The facilityโ€™s leadership and management picture is mixed but shows signs of change. Several reviewers remarked on new administration and a nursing director who has worked to improve staffing, address underperforming personnel, and enhance daily processes; other reviewers continued to report poor communication and unreturned calls. This suggests a transitional environment where improvements are visible to some families but long-standing operational problems remain in places.

For prospective residents and families the important takeaways are that Greenbrier offers strengths in rehabilitation, some excellent and compassionate individual caregivers, and active efforts at management change, but it also exhibits variability in core operations: staffing consistency, sanitation practices, meal-service reliability, medication and documentation controls, and discharge/transitional care. Visitors should consider an in-person tour during meal service, ask specific questions about current staffing levels and turnover, review recent quality or regulatory information, and observe communication pathways for clinical updates and incident escalation to assess whether the facilityโ€™s current state aligns with their expectations.

    About Greenbrier Regional Medical Center

Greenbrier Regional Medical Center sits at 1017 George Washington Hwy N in Chesapeake, VA, and has a mix of services folks often look for as they get older or need extra care, since they've got skilled nursing, strong rehab, long-term care, and a focus on dementia and Alzheimer's, plus you'll find emergency and urgent care right on site, which helps when things happen suddenly. The center has 120 licensed beds, usually taking care of about 104 residents daily, and offers both private rooms at a daily rate of $220 and semi-private rooms at $206, which seems about what one might expect for this area, and though they've been updating the building and have new management, some recent reports show they've had 52 deficiencies documented, covering things like accidents, infection control, and supervision, so that's something families might want to ask about. There's a range of daily help on offer, since trained personal care assistants help with dressing, grooming, laundry, and dining, and folks have access to podiatry, wound care, occupational therapy, and even mental health services with psychiatrists and psychoanalysts available, which is handy because health needs can change fast. They've got social activities-arts and crafts, wellness programs, and devotional gatherings-plus indoor common rooms, activity spaces, and entertainment options like TV, Wi-Fi, and even a salon/barbershop, so seniors don't always have to leave for day-to-day comforts. The property has some nice touches for comfort and safety like a sprinkler system, guest parking, washers, and dryers, and kitchens or kitchenettes in certain rooms. They run a tight ship with 64.3 full-time staff equivalent and a nurse staffing level below the state average at 3.09 hours per resident per day, and with a nurse turnover of 58.5%, it means staff might change more than in some places, which can matter for continuity of care. Insurance options include long-term care insurance, and they do provide respite care so someone can stay just for a short while, but it's important to note that they're not accepting new patients right now, so families should check back if they're interested. The place emphasizes holistic health and a nurturing environment, focusing on both physical and emotional needs, and the building's been remodeled for comfort and modern use, offering transportation for residents when they need to get out. Families and residents might feel that the variety of care-internal medicine, surgery, outpatient care, and fitness programs-makes life easier, though with past inspection delays and some safety issues flagged, it's a good idea to ask direct questions and tour in person if considering a stay at Greenbrier Regional Medical Center.
