    Warm, home-like care and staff

I'm very pleased with Golden Years - the hands-on owners and genuinely caring staff make it feel like family, and nurses, the visiting doctor and on-site therapy are attentive and responsive. Meals are nutritious and tasty, the building and grounds are clean and well-kept, and there are plenty of activities, a covered deck for outdoor meals and plans for a greenhouse. My loved one is happy and safe here, and I highly recommend this warm, home-like community.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews of Golden Years Assisted Living present a strongly polarized picture. Many families praise the facility for its family-like atmosphere, hands-on ownership, and compassionate staff; they highlight a sense that residents are known and engaged, with artistic and social programming that taps resident talents. Several reviewers specifically commend the dining program as nutritious and enjoyable, and the facility offers on-site clinical supports including a visiting doctor, physical therapy, X-ray services, a 24-hour nursing station, and pharmacy access. Admissions and tour staff are frequently described as welcoming, and interior common areas and recreational amenities (TV rooms, gym, covered outdoor deck) are often characterized as clean and comfortable.

At the same time, a distinct set of operational concerns appears across other reviews. Multiple comments point to inconsistent staff competence and preparedness, which affects admission transitions and day-to-day responsiveness. Sanitation and pest-control concerns are raised for some units and common areas, and odor control is described as variable. Several reviewers mention aging building elements—ceiling leaks, unfinished roof work, and other deferred maintenance—that contribute to an older, institutional feel in parts of the property. Exterior maintenance and grounds upkeep are also inconsistent, with isolated observations of litter and compromised entry hardware that imply security and aesthetic shortcomings.

Communication and transparency emerge as central themes dividing reviewers. While many families describe good communication and an involved administration, others cite breakdowns in family notification and limited access to documentation, including surveillance records used in incident review. There are also claims of serious end-of-life and incident-handling concerns; those descriptions have prompted strong family reactions and, in at least one instance, mention of potential legal action. Taken together, these items suggest gaps in standardized incident-response processes and family-facing transparency.

For prospective residents and families, the pattern suggests two important considerations. First, the facility appears capable of providing warm, engaged care with robust programming and onsite clinical services when staffing and management practices are functioning well. Second, variability in operations—staffing, cleaning and pest control, building maintenance, and transparency—creates risk that experience will differ notably between units and over time. A thorough tour that includes inspection of specific rooms and common areas, direct questions about staffing ratios, cleaning and pest-control protocols, recent maintenance and renovation history, incident-investigation policies, and access to medical and surveillance records will help clarify whether current conditions align with a particular family's priorities.

    About Golden Years - Hampton

Golden Years Assisted Living Facility in Hampton, VA, provides assisted living and memory care for seniors who need support with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and medication management, and you'll find the staff help with transfers and mobility, so if someone uses a wheelchair or needs extra help walking, there's care for that too because non-ambulatory care's available all through the day and night with 24-hour supervision and a call system to keep residents safe. The rooms come furnished and include a telephone; there are different floor plans, and someone always helps new residents move in, which can make joining the community smoother. Meals are a big part of life here with restaurant-style dining all day, special diets like diabetic or allergy-sensitive options, low/no sodium meals, and guest meals, and if someone prefers, they can have room service too, plus there are international choices from time to time, and the dining room is where you can enjoy eating together and meeting neighbors. Staff members speak English and manage medication, bathing, dressing, and incontinence care, and there's a licensed nurse on-site to make sure everyone gets the care they need.

The community offers many amenities that help people stay comfortable and active such as housekeeping, laundry, and even dry cleaning, so nobody needs to worry about chores like cleaning or clothes; a salon and barber are there for haircuts or grooming, and there's a beautician on-site. Residents often use indoor and outdoor spaces like walking paths, a garden, and outdoor sitting areas for fresh air and maybe a chat or quiet moment. Inside, social areas include a movie night area and an arts room for creative times, and staff arrange both community-sponsored and resident-run events like games, crafts, hobbies, devotional services, and outings, with a recreation director planning daily events to support both body and mind. Fitness programs, therapies like physical therapy and rehabilitation, wellness equipment, and support for residents with diabetes or other health needs are available, and specialized care's in place for people with memory loss, like Alzheimer's, with an environment to help reduce confusion and wandering.

Residents use the transportation and shopping services for errands or doctor visits, and the building design focuses on accessibility and comfort, making it easier for residents to join group activities, socialize, and build friendships. There are health and safety features like an emergency alert system throughout the community, and friendly staff focus on making sure every resident feels at home and safe. Golden Years Assisted Living Facility, licensed under ALF 1104598, has received awards for its meal quality, activities, and staff friendliness, and keeps up a lively schedule with indoor and outdoor events, always aiming to support seniors' health, independence, and happiness while providing a comfortable place to live.
