    Resident praises staff, food, care

I live in this beautiful, cosy community and I'm very happy with my residence. The staff are friendly, helpful and accessible - the administrator is easy to reach and the team approach makes visits enjoyable. The kitchen is amazing; dining room meals (and room delivery) are excellent. I also appreciate the multiple levels of care, openness to hospice, and convenient transportation.

    Summary of reviews

The reviews present a mixed but clearly polarized view of Friendship Assisted Living. Strengths cited repeatedly include an accessible administrator, a team-based staff approach, multiple levels of care available on-site, and an openness to work with hospice programs — including attending hospice meetings and retaining residents on hospice. The community environment is often described as attractive and comfortable, with residents appearing content and common areas characterized as cozy. Transportation services and a central dining program with optional in-room meal delivery are operational features that families find useful.

Staff performance elicits divergent impressions. Many accounts describe staff as friendly, helpful, and effective at making visits more enjoyable; the kitchen receives frequent praise and is described as a highlight. However, other comments raise concerns about inconsistent staff conduct and management practices, with references to mean behavior and perceptions of administrative incompetence. These divergent perceptions suggest variability in staff interactions and in how management issues are addressed.

Care-quality themes are likewise mixed. Positive aspects include coordinated, team-oriented approaches to resident needs and willingness to coordinate with external providers such as hospice. Conversely, several notes indicate gaps in routine personal care: inconsistent bathing schedules, delays or omissions in incontinence-related care, and broader concerns about clinical oversight and responsiveness. These are operational concerns that could affect resident comfort and dignity if not addressed systematically.

Dining is a clear strength for many families — the kitchen and food are frequently praised — but there are also complaints about meal consistency, with instances of meals being overly tough or highly seasoned. The facility provides both communal dining and in-room delivery, which offers flexible options for residents with varying needs.

Facility and maintenance feedback is mixed as well. The community is described as beautiful and comfortable, but reviewers also noted cleanliness and laundry management issues and occasional furniture or equipment disrepair. Combined with the care and staffing inconsistencies, these maintenance and sanitation concerns contribute to perceptions that the facility may not always deliver value commensurate with its cost.

Notable patterns: the facility appears to offer meaningful services and a strong dining program, and it has administrative accessibility around hospice and care-level transitions. At the same time, recurring operational weaknesses — incontinence-care processes, personal-care scheduling, maintenance follow-through, and inconsistent management/staff conduct — are significant and recurring themes. Prospective residents and families should arrange an in-person tour, sample a meal, ask for specifics about staffing ratios and bathing/laundry schedules, review maintenance and incident protocols, and discuss hospice-transition policies to get a clearer sense of current practices and recent improvements.

    About Friendship Assisted Living

Friendship Assisted Living, found at 320 Hershberger Road, NW, in Roanoke, VA, is a long-standing senior care community with 90 beds, and folks have known it for more than 100 years for steady care and friendly faces, and the place really aims to give every resident the help they want while also letting them stay as independent as they can, with programs that focus on dignity, safety, and daily needs. The building is safe, fire protected with sprinkler systems, has handicap access, and offers a range of rooms, including studios, single and two-bedroom places, semi-private and private spaces, some with kitchenettes and all with WiFi and cable TV so people can stay comfortable. Friendship Assisted Living provides personal care with dressing, grooming, bathing, toileting, and general daily support and brings homemaker or companion services right to residents whether they're in their room, the hospital, or elsewhere, while the skilled staff includes nurses, therapists, aides, and a Certified Nursing Assistant training program so help's always nearby.

The community offers both assisted and independent living, short-term rehab, memory care for folks with cognitive problems, and full nursing home options with physical, occupational, and speech therapy you can get as inpatient, outpatient, or even short-term, plus there's home care, respite, and adult medical day care available if someone needs a break or extra help for a bit. Meals come in the dining room or in rooms, with restaurant-style choices and menus for people who have allergies or diabetes, and there's housekeepers for cleaning, as well as laundry and linen services, so nobody has to fuss about chores, and maintenance keeps everything in working order. Residents can enjoy common areas such as a fitness center, salon/barbershop, library, game rooms, movie theater, walking paths, porches with scenic views, and outdoor spaces, plus there's WiFi, community rooms, washers and dryers, and parking for guests, along with transportation services when rides are needed for errands or appointments.

Friendship Assisted Living puts a focus on keeping people connected, so there are daily social events, arts and crafts, wellness classes, educational programs, chapel and music programs, and even resident-run activities, with a real emphasis on building relationships and friendship among neighbors. There's also spiritual support through chaplaincy, a clinic for medical consults, and around-the-clock emergency systems and call buttons for safety, plus nursing supervision for up to 16 hours each day depending on the need. The staff help with managing medications, provide help with mobility and transfers, support non-ambulatory residents, and offer tailored care plans so each person gets the exact help they want, and people can use long-term care insurance if they have it. With move-in support and concierge help, Friendship Assisted Living works to keep life low-stress and easy to settle into, and with Mr. Alexander Parker as the administrator, there's steady leadership at hand.
