    Clean caring community, excellent amenities

I toured this clean, well-maintained community in a convenient location with beautiful rooms and amazing valley views. The staff were attentive and caring, knew residents by name, and the memory care/assisted-living services (plus therapy) felt strong. Meals were nutritious and varied and activities/amenities (sunroom, patio, library, salon, theater) kept residents engaged - overall I felt comfortable recommending it.

    Summary of reviews

Friendship Salem Terrace is consistently described as a well‑maintained, attractive campus with a homelike memory‑care unit, ample common spaces, and visible outdoor amenities. Reviewers praise the facility’s appearance — bright, clean interiors, well‑kept grounds, and pleasant views — and point to a range of onsite amenities (library, salon, theater, internet room) that support social engagement. Physical therapy and rehabilitation services are highlighted as effective, and many families note prompt housekeeping and overall sanitation of common areas.

Staff and care interactions are generally presented as a core strength. Multiple accounts emphasize friendly, respectful, and attentive nursing and caregiving staff who engage residents by name and provide personalized attention in the dementia unit, including one‑on‑one care at times. The admissions and outreach representatives receive positive remarks for professionalism and communication. Programming is robust: music, arts, Bible study, bingo, and other activities are regularly offered, and dining is described as varied and nutritious with dessert options; however, some families found meal timing (for example, an early breakfast cutoff) to be inconvenient.

At the same time, several operational patterns emerge as areas for inquiry. Cost is frequently described as high, so financial expectations should be clarified up front. Clinical coverage outside daytime hours appears to be limited in practice; a number of families noted transfers to the emergency department for issues that were not perceived as acute, and one comment specifically mentioned a night nurse not being on call. Relatedly, a few families raised concerns about medication oversight and clinical monitoring following notable declines in individual residents; these are significant items to discuss with management and the clinical team.

Facility design and staffing also present mixed feedback. While common areas and some memory‑care spaces feel bright and open, other parts of the dementia unit were characterized as having an institutional layout, small private rooms, and awkward door placements that may affect circulation and privacy. Reviewers described variability in staffing levels and turnover, and a few observed periods with more limited staff presence. These patterns suggest prospective residents and families should assess current staffing ratios, shift coverage, and how the facility adapts staffing to resident acuity.

Practical next steps for families considering Friendship Salem Terrace: schedule a walkthrough of the specific unit and a sample room to evaluate room size, layout, and noise; ask for details about overnight and weekend clinical coverage, medication‑management protocols, and recent staffing turnover; confirm meal schedules and any flexibility; and request a written outline of the activity program and rehabilitative services. Overall, the facility is presented as warm, clean, and activity‑rich with many praised strengths, but families should probe clinical coverage, staff consistency, room dimensions, and cost to ensure the fit matches their needs.

    About Friendship Salem Terrace

Friendship Salem Terrace sits at 1851 Harrogate Drive in Salem, VA, and it's a place where seniors can find different levels of support, whether someone is looking for independent living, assisted living, or needs help with memory care; the staff there have a reputation for kindness and treat every resident with respect, and that's something visitors notice right away. There's support for folks who want to stay active on their own, but there's also real attention paid to those needing help-residents can get care for things like dressing, bathing, medication, and even more complex needs like transfers or diabetes management, though insulin shots are handled only for those who need staff to do it. There are programs designed for people with Alzheimer's or dementia, with safety measures like secure memory care areas, alarm bracelets, and purpose-built buildings that keep residents from wandering, which sometimes happens with memory issues, plus staff are awake and ready to help 24 hours a day.

Residents enjoy private and furnished rooms, many with their own bathrooms, cable TV, and internet, and the common areas include outdoor walking paths, front porches with mountain views, garden spaces, a spa, and indoor spots like an activity room, library, movie theater, and fitness room, which means there's usually something for everyone to get involved with. Meals get a bit of care too-chefs plan and cook them, there's restaurant-style dining, all day menus, and efforts to support special diets, and if someone needs incontinence care or reminders to go to the restroom, that's something staff help with quietly and with dignity. Amenities cover housekeeping, laundry, transportation to outings or appointments, and chaplaincy and therapy services; there's a focus on keeping folks comfortable, clean, and linked into both medical and social routines.

There's a full social calendar with activities like movie nights, music programs, art and fitness classes, gardening, hobby groups, outings, therapy dogs, and holiday celebrations, so people have a choice about how to spend their days, whether active or calm. Therapy and rehab are available on site, along with outpatient services, and the community helps residents stay put if their needs change by offering more support as needed, which helps families worry a bit less. Friendship Salem Terrace has both behavioral care and ways to keep residents safe if they have issues like confusion or physical acting out, so people who need more supervision and structure can get it in a safe, dedicated space. Residents see visiting medical professionals, get help from a physical therapy team when needed, and have systems in place for emergencies and daily assistance. Mr. Brent Poff runs the facility, and the whole place operates with a sense of respect for the residents, trying to make daily life feel both settled and engaging. There's no pretending at perfection here, but Friendship Salem Terrace offers a range of options and steady support for seniors with simple needs or those who need a lot more day-to-day care.
