    Happy resident recommends warm community

I live here and I'm very happy with the friendly, helpful staff and welcoming residents. The community is clean and well-kept, my comfortable apartment gets weekly housekeeping, the food is very good, and there are plenty of activities and reliable transportation-overall a warm, safe, social place I'd recommend.

    Summary of reviews

Sommerset Retirement Community is presented across reviews as a well-kept, socially active independent living community with a strong emphasis on resident engagement. Reviewers consistently describe clean common spaces, attractive grounds, private balconies, and a range of on-site amenities such as a beauty shop, library outreach, and meeting rooms. The community offers weekly housekeeping and linen service, on-site laundry rooms, optional storage packages, and accessible transportation that regularly runs outings to medical appointments, shopping, and cultural trips. These operational features support an environment that many residents describe as homey and conducive to social interaction.

Staff and day-to-day operations receive largely positive comments: front-desk personnel, dining staff, maintenance teams, and activity coordinators are frequently described as friendly, responsive, and attentive. Prompt maintenance response times and staff familiarity with residents (personalized greetings, knowledge of names) are recurring strengths. There is also access to outpatient rehabilitation services on site (physical/occupational/speech therapies) and periodic nursing presence, but the facility is predominantly independent living and does not supply full assisted-living medical care.

Dining and activities are central to the resident experience. The community generally provides breakfast and dinner included in rent, with lunch offered a la carte; reviewers praise the social dining atmosphere and many organized events such as bingo, music programs, museum and winery trips, and holiday celebrations. At the same time, a pattern of concerns about the dining program appears: menu repetition, a tendency toward starchy offerings, and uneven meal quality are mentioned often, along with restrictive guest meal policies and occasional reductions to meal services tied to administrative changes.

Notable operational weaknesses cluster around management, infrastructure, and service continuity. Several reviews document changes after ownership transitions that coincided with reductions in services (housekeeping frequencies, meal plans, transportation options) and the introduction of additional fees; this has led to resident dissatisfaction in affected cases. There are also recurring comments about aging building systems and interiors that would benefit from updating, occasional variability in management availability and communication, and instances of HVAC or temperature-control unreliability. Importantly, Sommerset functions as an independent-living community: on-site clinical care is limited compared with assisted-living settings, and families should confirm care-level capabilities before choosing the community.

Overall, Sommerset scores highly for social programming, staff warmth, cleanliness, and transportation—qualities that make it a good match for active, independent seniors seeking affordability and community. Prospective residents and families should weigh those strengths against the potential for service changes during ownership transitions, the need for clearer pricing disclosures, dining preferences, and the community’s capacity to meet higher-care needs or respond to infrastructure issues such as HVAC reliability. A focused tour and up-to-date discussion with management about fee structure, current meal plans, and available clinical supports will help determine fit for individual needs.

Apartments come in a variety of floor plans and are spacious and clean, with central heating and air conditioning, and there are elevators and smoke protection systems for safety, which really helps everyone feel more secure. The staff is supportive and always focused on residents' well-being and health, and there's a 24-hour call system, as well as nursing care available up to 12-16 hours a day, plus medication management if someone needs help with that or with daily tasks like dressing and bathing.

There are plenty of features meant for enjoyment and ease, like a fitness center, a rehab center, a wellness center, and a gracious dining room where residents get restaurant-style meals every day as part of their monthly rent, which takes a lot of daily hassle off their plate, and there's both a private dining room for guests and a community lounge with a fireplace and a library, so there are spots for quiet or company. The complimentary chauffeured bus helps people keep social and active by taking them shopping, to doctor visits, out sightseeing, and on group excursions. Residents can bring their pets, and they'll find walking paths and landscaped outdoor spaces, plus resident parking and smoke-free indoor public areas so the air stays easier to breathe, which means the facilities work for people with different needs.

Sommerset has won awards for its care and its engaging activities, including the Best of Senior Living Award and the All-Star Award, and there's always something going on, from bingo and religious services to arts and crafts in dedicated rooms, as well as a gallery that shows off the community's life, and whether you're looking for independent living with a busy, friendly environment or someone in your family needs memory care that's designed to ease confusion and keep people safer, they offer specialized support. The community offers weekly housekeeping, meals, activities from social to educational, devotional services onsite and offsite, beautician and barber services, along with home care for companionship or daily assistance, so people can feel like part of a bigger group while having the help they need. The overall focus is on comfort, safety, and belonging, with spaces where people gather, share, and feel at home, and the neighborhood around the community makes it possible to get out and explore, adding to an experience that mixes activity with serenity.
