    Warm home-like facility, compassionate staff

I'm very pleased with my loved one's stay - the staff are consistently kind, attentive and compassionate, nursing and therapy teams are knowledgeable and rehab-focused, and the facility is spotless with a warm, home-like atmosphere and plenty of activities. Management and caregivers were responsive and made the transition easy, and the dining and daily life felt welcoming. I'm grateful for the care and would recommend this community.

    Summary of reviews

The reviews present a mixed picture of care at this facility, with several families describing meaningful, positive interactions with individual caregivers while others report operational problems that affected day-to-day care. Positive comments center on specific nursing staff who provided attentive, responsive care and on cases where residents showed measurable short-term clinical improvement. Those favorable notes suggest the facility has the capacity to provide competent, compassionate care under the right circumstances.

At the same time, a number of reviews point to systemic issues. Staffing levels and training are recurring concerns: reviewers describe overwork, perceived lack of training, and situations where residents were not monitored closely, creating fall risk and other safety concerns. Several accounts raise questions about consistency in following physician orders and established care plans, which suggests gaps in clinical oversight and handoff processes. There are also repeated references to delays in attending to residentsโ€™ toileting and bathing needs and to broader sanitation concerns, indicating weaknesses in routine personal-care workflows.

Staff conduct and communication are another consistent theme. Families report both compassionate interactions and instances of a dismissive or confrontational tone from administrative and frontline staff. Communication gaps include unclear explanations about care decisions and, in some cases, allegations related to discharge or transfer handling. Separate reviewers expressed concerns about billing and insurance practices; those descriptions are significant enough to warrant verification during a tour or prior to admission.

Dining and amenities receive limited but consistent commentary: food quality is described as inconsistent and at times unsatisfactory. There is little detailed information about activities or communal programming in the reviews provided, so the facilityโ€™s offerings in those areas are not well characterized. Physical-condition comments are sparse, but sanitation and incontinence-care delays were mentioned often enough to be a consideration when assessing overall environment and daily care routines.

For prospective residents and families: weigh the positive reports of attentive, effective caregivers against multiple operational concerns. Ask targeted questions during a visit about staffing ratios, staff training and turnover, fall-prevention and monitoring protocols, medication reconciliation, how physician orders are communicated and verified, sample menus, activity schedules, and the facilityโ€™s billing and insurance processes. Request recent state inspection reports, references from current families, and examples of how the facility addresses care escalations and family complaints. These steps will help determine whether the facilityโ€™s strengths match your priorities and whether the documented weaknesses have been addressed.

    About Maryview Nursing Care Center

Maryview Nursing Care Center, also known as Northern Cardinal Rehabilitation and Nursing, sits about 4.4 miles outside of Portsmouth Heights in Suffolk, Virginia, and belongs to the Bon Secours health system that follows the tradition of the Sisters of Bon Secours, so you see plenty of focus on compassion and respect, and folks there try hard to help seniors feel cared for while providing a wide mix of services for long-term care, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, memory care, and assisted living in a big building with 120 licensed beds, where around-the-clock staff watch over residents' needs and keep safety a priority with features such as sprinkler systems, handicap access, and emergency alert buttons in furnished studio rooms with private bathrooms, cable TV, air conditioning, and available Wi-Fi, and you'll see that most staff speak English and do things like housekeeping, laundry, and serve meals in a community dining room that does restaurant-style dining, even handling special diets like those for diabetes or allergies, and caregivers also help with bathing, medication, transfers, and toileting to make daily life easier.

The care team at this place covers a lot of medical ground, too, with services including diabetes care, wound management, hospice, cancer care, palliative support, podiatry, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and behavioral medicine, and they put a big emphasis on recovery and maintaining routines, offering memory programs, home health visits, physical therapy, and even cancer care and endoscopy, along with emergency services, so it's not just all routine nursing but also includes urgent care if needed, and they offer both long-term stays and short-term rehabilitation.

Amenities cover the basics and a few bonuses, with studio room layouts, laundry, move-in help, guest parking, housekeeping, and lots of outdoor spaces like walking paths and a garden, so residents can sit in the sun or stroll with friends or family, and for fun there's an activity room, movie theater, game room, a library, a fitness center, music and arts programs, resident-run activities, and regular entertainment such as movie nights, plus a schedule of social, spiritual, and exercise programs, and family support services.

You'll also find help with assisted living needs, skilled nursing (about 12-16 hours daily nursing), memory care support, and supervision every hour of the day, and if anyone needs help with dressing, grooming, using a wheelchair, or moving around, there are caregivers dedicated to those specific daily tasks, and they even have a 24-hour call system built-in to keep everyone a little safer and more connected.

Maryview is on the bigger side of senior living homes and keeps a staff of about 70 full-time equivalents, having seen over 36,000 patient days in 2023, and the rooms can be private or semi-private, with daily rates at $230 or $202, and the center accepts both Medicare and Medicaid as payment, which gives families a little more flexibility.

It's useful to know that Maryview Nursing Care Center holds a 1-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and families rate it at 5.4 out of 10, making it the 9th highest among 11 local communities, and the facility keeps up with regular health and safety inspections while following state requirements for staff-to-patient ratios, so folks thinking about Maryview should weigh all these facts together when considering it for themselves or a loved one.
