    Summary of reviews

Overall sentiment in the collected reviews for Lilac Plaza Retirement Community is strongly positive, with repeated emphasis on quality staff, an active social environment, plentiful amenities, and generally clean, modern living spaces. Reviewers frequently describe staff as accommodating, polite, sympathetic, and genuinely caring — terms that appear consistently and contribute to a strong perception of attentive, trustworthy care. Multiple comments note that staff and administration are helpful and responsive, making the community feel comfortable and supportive for residents and their families.

Facilities and apartments receive favorable remarks. Reviewers mention newly renovated units with modern kitchens alongside clean common areas and well-kept grounds. At the same time, several reviewers point out that improvements are uneven: some wings or sections are 'new and improved,' while other parts of the community could use updating. The property offers an extensive set of on-site amenities — a computer lab, hair/beauty salon, cafeteria, coffee shop, pool, sauna, and a large social gathering center — which are highlighted as major positives. Those amenities, together with cleanliness and a safe environment, are cited as reasons many find Lilac Plaza a good value and a top choice in the Spokane area.

Activities and social life are prominent strengths. Reviews consistently praise the volume and variety of programming — crafts, sewing, puzzles, theater events, DVD checkouts, and other recurring activities — and describe a lively social atmosphere. Organized outings with bus transportation are mentioned specifically and are appreciated by residents who want to stay engaged outside the community. Reviewers also note that COVID-19 temporarily dampened activity levels, but that programming is gradually returning toward normal. The presence of many communal opportunities and a large gathering center contributes to repeated statements that Lilac Plaza is a 'great place' for social seniors.

Dining and everyday conveniences receive positive mentions as well. The dining room is described as pleasant and the food as tasty, and the on-site coffee shop and cafeteria add convenience. The beauty/hair shop is singled out as 'wonderful' in at least one review. Families report feeling their loved ones are safe at Lilac Plaza, with some explicitly stating it felt 'safe for mom' — reinforcing the strong sense of security and appropriate care.

There are several consistent areas of concern to note. A number of reviewers describe a decline in the surrounding neighborhood, which affects the feel of the property’s location. Internally, the mixed condition of spaces — newly renovated apartments contrasted with older, less-updated sections — suggests uneven capital investment or phased renovations; prospective residents should inspect specific units and areas to understand the condition of the parts they would use. Availability can be an issue: while administration is described as flexible about waitlists and move-in options, reviewers also mention times when there were no units available to tour. COVID-related reductions in activities were a recurring theme; while recovery is underway, activity levels were impacted and may continue to fluctuate.

In summary, Lilac Plaza Retirement Community is generally portrayed as a well-managed, amenity-rich, and welcoming community with strong staff and a broad activity program — attributes that many reviewers consider exceptional value for the Spokane area. The main caveats are external (neighborhood deterioration) and internal inconsistencies in building condition, plus occasional availability constraints and the lingering effects of COVID on programming. For prospective residents and families, the reviews suggest Lilac Plaza is an excellent choice for those seeking an active, social, and secure senior living environment, but recommend touring specific units (when possible) and asking about recent renovation plans and current activity schedules to ensure the fit and condition meet individual expectations.

    About Lilac Plaza Retirement Community

Lilac Plaza Retirement Community sits on the North side of Spokane at 7007 N Wiscomb St, with another location called Holman Gardens in Spokane Valley. You'll find it's a non-profit and non-denominational community, and the focus here is on affordable, income-based rent for seniors 55 and older with both one and two-bedroom apartments. The place runs through the Spokane Baptist Association Homes, who want to build safe and high-quality housing for seniors in a Christian setting while also giving folks a sense of independence and privacy. The community offers independent living for those who want to stay active, providing help with things like meals, laundry, housekeeping, medication checks, and basic personal care.

One thing people notice about Lilac Plaza is there are plenty of indoor and outdoor spaces-good gardens, walking trails, and both indoor and outdoor common areas where folks can meet up or find a quiet corner. The place allows cats and dogs, and there's resident parking plus close access to public transit. There's a beauty and barber shoppe, a wellness center, a library, a computer center, and an exercise room, so you don't have to go far for the basics. Hungry's Fine Foods, the onsite dining spot, makes meals fresh from scratch every day and is especially known for its focaccia bread. Restaurant-style dining is part of everyday life, and staff aim for quality ingredients.

There's always something going on, since there's a full schedule of events-from music, karaoke, craft activities, and weekly movies to memory and wellness classes, Bingo, and Wii bowling. Card games happen weekly and Sunday Vespers along with Bible studies are a regular thing, too. Casino outings and transportation for shopping or local attractions are part of the deal. There's a wellness coordinator and an activity director, both keeping track of the many group programs. The computer center offers classes for those interested, and exercise classes run for everyone who wants to keep moving.

Health services and support are available, especially through Valley Vista Care Corporation, which also manages other local retirement and assisted living places. Lilac Plaza helps folks manage daily tasks like meal prep, hygiene, and medication, and has a behavior program to support residents with Huntington's disease, traumatic brain injuries, or dementia disorders. The apartments come wheelchair accessible, with private showers and bathtubs, and housekeeping keeps things tidy. Meals and daily services are set up for those who need them, but folks can stay as independent as they'd like.

You'll find the community values affordable living, privacy, and giving seniors plenty of ways to stay social and healthy. The site stays open for tours and more details at spokaneretirement.org, and people say the gardens and trails are especially nice for a walk in Spokane's North side air. The focus remains on supporting the elderly of the Inland Northwest, offering homes and services designed for both safety and well-being, and it stays clear and simple, as a place to live that balances independence with the right amount of help, whenever it's needed.
