I'm very pleased with how my loved one is treated like family - the staff and nurses are kind, attentive and truly caring, and Heather in administration has been great to work with. The facility is clean and home-like, with good food, engaging activities, clear communication, and strong rehab (shout-out to Jason and Sarah).

    Summary of reviews

Reviews of New Martinsville Health & Rehabilitation describe a facility with clear strengths in hands-on care, rehabilitation, and overall atmosphere, alongside notable inconsistencies in operational reliability. Many families and residents praise the nursing and floor staff as compassionate and attentive, and several commend the rehabilitation team specifically — with two therapists named as strong contributors to recovery. The facility is frequently described as clean and home-like, and staff interactions are often characterized as respectful and caring. These positive impressions extend to activities programming and to admissions/administrative staff, who are described as helpful and communicative by a number of families.

Clinical-quality impressions are mixed. Numerous accounts highlight effective, individualized care and proactive medication oversight, while other accounts raise concerns about variability in staff conduct and responsiveness. Reviews indicate lapses such as missed appointments or problems with follow-through on scheduled services, and some families reported changes to medication without clear communication. Together these observations suggest that while frontline clinical staff can be strong, the facility may have inconsistencies in care coordination and in documentation/communication around medications and scheduled treatments.

Dining and amenities receive generally favorable remarks for cleanliness and comfort; several reviewers note satisfactory meals and a pleasant dining environment. However, a subset of comments points to variation in food quality, indicating that meal consistency could be improved. Physical facilities are commonly described as well-maintained, with specific positive remarks about bathing/shower area size and an overall tidy appearance. A smaller number of reviewers mentioned odor concerns in parts of the facility, which warrants attention from management as a sanitation and resident-comfort issue.

Management and regulatory patterns merit particular attention. Multiple reviewers compliment an understanding, compassionate administrator and staff who answer questions and make families feel heard. Conversely, there are statements alleging financial priorities influencing care decisions and mentions of past state-level fines; these raise questions about regulatory history and operational priorities. Prospective families should ask for documentation on recent inspections, inquire about any citations and corrective actions, and request details on medication-consent policies and care-continuity procedures during tours.

Overall, New Martinsville Health & Rehabilitation exhibits several important strengths — notably in rehabilitation, cleanliness, and many staff–resident interactions — but also shows patterns of inconsistent operational execution in areas such as staff conduct, medication communication, appointment follow-through, and meal consistency. Families considering the facility should validate current staffing levels, review recent regulatory and inspection records, observe mealtime routines, and seek clarity on medication-management and scheduling protocols to assess whether the facility’s strengths align with their expectations and care needs.

About New Martinsville Health & Rehabilitation

New Martinsville Health & Rehabilitation sits at 225 Russell Avenue in New Martinsville, WV and runs as part of Hill Valley Healthcare, working with a staff size somewhere between 51 and 200 employees, and you can find out more about them at NewMartinsvilleHR.com if that's of interest. This senior living community acts as both a nursing home and a residential care facility, offering different levels of care like skilled nursing, assisted living, dementia care, and rehabilitation, plus services like hospice and respite care for folks who need a break from their regular caregivers. They provide help with daily living tasks, manage medications, prepare meals, and make sure personal care needs don't get overlooked. They say their People First philosophy guides them and they're always aiming for quality care. They have a state-of-the-art rehab gym for advanced treatment, a well-stocked library for quiet reading, and outdoor spaces like a patio garden and a recreation area for fresh air, all designed so residents don't feel shut in. There's also a beauty and barber shop on site, transportation for medical appointments or small outings, and even spiritual support if that's important to someone.

Ashley Wensyel serves as administrator, and the facility holds certifications for Medicare, Medicaid, and Private Pay, with approval as a nursing home (NH) with dual SNF/NF certification, while having 100 licensed and certified beds and caring for about 92 residents on any given day. Staff provide skilled nursing 24/7, with a nursing staff rate at about 3.11 hours per resident daily, although they've got a nurse turnover rate of 34.2%, which stands out a bit, and they've dealt with a fair share of staff changes. Their care team offers wound care, orthopedic rehab, post-surgical help, pulmonary and bariatric care, cancer care, tracheostomy support, and therapies including speech, physical, and occupational therapy.

The facility's recognized for dementia care expertise but also has a track record that folks might want to know about-reports show they've had 55 total health deficiencies during inspections, including 3 related to infection control, and they've been cited for things like failures in food service and infection prevention, plus more serious concerns like protecting residents from abuse and neglect. They're labeled a Special Focus Facility Candidate, so government agencies watch them closely for past quality issues, though they haven't been formally flagged.

New Martinsville Health & Rehabilitation keeps its doors open to seniors needing short- or long-term care for physical or memory challenges, with a goal of helping each person reach their recovery potential in a comfortable, residential setting, and their staff are focused on both physical and emotional well-being, but inspection reports and government oversight suggest it's important for families to keep an eye on quality for peace of mind.
