    Caring staff, smooth transition, satisfied

My grandmother moved in recently and I'm very pleased. The staff are caring, respectful, and treat residents like family - they went above and beyond during a smooth transition and provide attentive, safe care. The home is clean and welcoming with private rooms, shared living and dining spaces, and good meals; she has everything she needs and we're satisfied.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews of Hawthorne Home - Janesville present a mixed picture, with clear strengths reported by some families alongside recurring operational concerns described by others. Several accounts praise the facility's homelike scale, private rooms, and communal living and dining spaces, and many families describe staff as attentive, respectful, and willing to go beyond routine duties. A number of reviewers also noted a smooth transition into the residence and satisfaction with personal care, with at least one family citing effective fall-prevention and consistently good care.

Care and staff observations are polarized. Positive accounts emphasize compassionate, family-oriented interactions and responsive attention to resident needs. Conversely, other reviewers raised concerns about staff conduct and professionalism—examples include frequent personal device use and visible workplace tension—which suggest variability in day-to-day staff behavior and morale. This variability appears to translate into uneven resident experiences; prospective families should assess current staffing patterns and observe staff–resident interactions during a visit.

Dining and activities show similar inconsistency. Some families describe appetizing meals and well-presented service, while others reported problems with meal temperature and overall meal quality. Activity offerings were described as limited by some reviewers; if programming and engagement are priorities, families should ask for sample activity schedules and observe activity participation during a tour.

Facilities and sanitation assessments are mixed. Several reviewers complimented the home’s appearance and maintenance, noting clean common areas and a comfortable residential layout. At the same time, other comments referenced sanitation concerns, indicating inconsistent housekeeping or maintenance follow-through. The physical setting—described as a large, house-like environment with private bathrooms—remains a strong selling point when well maintained.

Management and communication emerged as a distinct area of concern for some families. Complaints about administrative responsiveness, including difficulty obtaining callbacks and perceived management–staff tensions, indicate potential gaps in family communication and leadership visibility. These issues, combined with the variability in staff performance, suggest the facility may have uneven operational oversight at times.

Overall, Hawthorne Home appears to deliver very positive outcomes for some residents—particularly those who value a homelike atmosphere and individualized attention—but other families have experienced inconsistent cleanliness, meal service, activity offerings, staff professionalism, and administrative responsiveness. Prospective residents and their families should schedule an in-person visit, observe meal service and activities, speak directly with current families and the administrator about staffing and communication practices, and request up-to-date information on staffing levels and housekeeping protocols before making a placement decision.

About Hawthorne Home - Janesville, WI

Hawthorne Home in Janesville, WI, is a small, family-oriented senior living community with only 8 licensed beds, so folks staying there get to know the staff and each other in a more homelike setting, and there's always help close by since it's a Community-based Residential Facility for folks who don't get around as easily anymore. The building has private and studio rooms, all with closets and in-room bathrooms, and there are full tubs available for bathing, which comes in handy for anyone who needs a little extra help. Residents can enjoy both indoor and outdoor common areas, including an enclosed courtyard and patio where people with memory issues can go outside safely. There's a set of indoor walking paths, so even on cold Wisconsin days, folks can still stretch their legs.

The services at Hawthorne Home cover a lot, from independent living to assisted living, memory care for those living with Alzheimer's and dementia, and continuing care, so it works for people as their needs change. There are specialized memory care programs with trained staff offering reminiscence therapy to support folks who need help staying engaged or keeping their minds active, and all care plans are tailored to what each person needs. If someone needs help with daily tasks, the staff steps in, and there's support for aging in place, respite care, hospice, diabetic care, incontinence care, medication management, and other healthcare needs too. For people who want it, they offer room service, housekeeping, laundry, grocery shopping, transportation at cost, and access to a beautician.

Meal options include vegan, low or no sodium, no sugar, vegetarian, and dining at any time of day, with food made onsite and served in cozy communal areas that feel more like a home than an institution. The community keeps people busy with social, educational, and entertainment activities, aiming to help everyone stay active and make friends. If someone likes to stay put or needs short-term care, that works too, and there are senior living advisors who talk families through options and help with the admission process if things get confusing.

Hawthorne Home doesn't accept Medicare and isn't certified by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, but it is fully licensed locally, with oversight from the Department of Aging or Veteran's Services. The staff includes CNAs, LPNs, and RNs who are on hand to help and check in, and there's a reputation around town for going above and beyond their basic duties. Monthly prices depend on the type of room, but those details aren't posted here. The community gets a fair 3.0-star rating, so people will find strengths as well as areas needing improvement, and it compares with other senior living options in Janesville when families are looking around.
