    Attentive staff, comforting historic care

I'm very pleased with my experience here. The staff-especially Blake and Tiffany and the gracious Sisters-are attentive, kind, and helped my mom recover; she's happy and well taken care of. The chef's Latinx-influenced food (biscuits and gravy was a hit), peaceful historic setting near downtown and a park, and solid rehab and long-term care options make this a comforting place for our family.

    Summary of reviews

The reviews present a mixed picture of St Elizabeth Home, with clear strengths in rehabilitation and individualized caregiving alongside persistent operational weaknesses. Rehabilitation and physical therapy are frequently cited as strong points: several families described effective short-term therapy that supported recovery. Many reviewers also praised individual staff members for kindness and attentiveness, and the facility's pastoral presence and end-of-life support were noted positively. The building's historic, homelike character and convenient downtown location (park across the street) are consistently identified as comforting features that support family visits and social connection.

At the same time, a number of facility-level issues recur. Nursing responsiveness and call-light response times are a common concern; families described long waits and difficulty locating nursing staff. Reviewers also described apparent short-staffing and limited on-site clinical availability, which reviewers linked to delays in attending to resident needs and inconsistent medication administration. Housekeeping and sanitation practices were described as irregular, including infrequent room and bathroom cleaning and inconsistent linen changes. Relatedly, some families reported problems with personal-property security and missing items; these accounts have led to external involvement by advocacy channels in at least one instance.

Dining and daily living produce mixed impressions. The on-site chef and some comfort-style menu items (including Latinx-influenced options) received praise, but reviewers also described bland or inconsistent meal quality and occasions when dietary restrictions were not strictly followed. Transportation coordination for medical appointments and unclear billing or therapy-charge practices were additional operational concerns mentioned by families. Reviewers highlighted episodes of poor communication or management instabilityโ€”changes in ownership, management issues, and Ombudsman involvement were specifically referencedโ€”suggesting gaps in administrative oversight and family communication pathways.

In practice this produces a polarized experience: some residents and families report compassionate care, successful rehab outcomes, and a welcoming atmosphere, while others experienced lapses in responsiveness, cleanliness, security, and coordination. Prospective residents and families would be well advised to inspect housekeeping routines, verify current staffing and clinical coverage, ask about property-security protocols, review how medications and dietary restrictions are managed, and inquire about transportation and billing practices. Checking state inspection records and speaking with the local Ombudsman or recent families can help clarify whether the operational weaknesses cited have been addressed.

    About St Elizabeth Home

St. Elizabeth Nursing Home sits at 109 S Atwood Ave in Janesville, WI and offers skilled nursing care for older adults, with a focus on health and daily living support, and the place holds 43 certified beds and usually has around 30 residents each day, so it feels on the smaller side, which makes it a bit less crowded than some places, and folks can choose between private or semi-private rooms with their own thermostat and cable TV, and there's even a guest suite if families come to visit, with things like a private bath, queen-size sofa sleeper, and some appliances like a microwave and coffeemaker, and people who need more help can get around-the-clock care from a team of nurses and caregivers, though the nurse staffing averages about 3.83 hours per resident per day and the nurse turnover rate is a bit high at 74.4%, and Nicole Chwala has been managing the place since November 2021. The home is non-profit, connected with Sisters of Charity Our Lady MO, and the building has a basement at 210208 N Main. St. Elizabeth Nursing Home has had a number of inspection deficiencies-70 total, with 13 tied to infection concerns, including not meeting federal standards for infection control (F0880), missing parts of resident care plans (F0656), and not always making sure areas are free from accident hazards or that folks get enough supervision (F0689), and there've been past violations related to stopping the spread of infections in the building. Still, they do offer short-term rehabilitation for people recovering from surgeries or illness, long-term skilled nursing for daily support, respite care when caregivers need a break, and hospice care for advanced illnesses, including a special 30-bed Alzheimer's unit for memory care. The facility tries to give a calm setting for healing, with services set up to meet residents' medical and emotional needs, and though there are no specific details about extra amenities or activities, the core care is aimed at helping people live with dignity and comfort, as much as possible, in a small, family-type community.
