    Pleasant living with attentive staff

I live here and am very pleased - the staff (Maria, Nurse Karrie and others) are friendly, responsive and attentive, residents are warm, and there are tons of activities and outings that keep me social and busy. The apartments are clean with nice amenities, the grounds and lakefront location are lovely, and the secure building and good staff communication give me real peace of mind.

    Summary of reviews

St. Catherine Commons presents as a well-maintained, newer independent-living community with a strong emphasis on social programming and scenic location. Reviewers consistently note the attractive lakefront grounds, modern apartments, and a range of on-site amenities (fitness room, chapel, cafe, community rooms) that support independent living and social engagement. The building is perceived as safe and clean, and many residents describe active friendships, frequent outings, classes (yoga, Wii bowling, crafts), and holiday events that contribute to quality of life.

Staff and direct-care impressions are generally positive: personnel are described as friendly, attentive and helpful, with several named individuals receiving praise for responsiveness during urgent situations and end-of-life support. Families reported that staff know residents and that routine check-ins occur. That said, there are operational concerns around privacy and staff conduct practices — specifically, families have raised issues about staff entry into apartments and expectations around disclosures and resident agreements. Additionally, a transition from independent to assisted services for some residents highlighted gaps in communication about care model changes and suitability for residents with progressing cognitive needs.

Dining and daily living services show mixed strengths. The facility offers a pleasant dining room and boxed-lunch options, plus occasional hot-lunch offerings and special dining events; however, reviewers describe the meal service as limited or inconsistent relative to some expectations for full daily meal coverage. Apartment features vary: many units are described as attractive and well-equipped, but amenity distribution is uneven (some units have in-unit washers/dryers and patios, others do not). Long corridors and unit layouts were noted as challenging for residents who use walkers.

Management and administrative patterns surfaced repeatedly. Cost is a prominent concern — monthly rents are perceived as high compared with local alternatives, with periodic increases and requirements around asset disclosure described as deterrents for some prospective residents. Families also reported variable follow-up on non-urgent maintenance requests and occasional issues with mail/package handling and neighbor privacy (gossip/monitoring). Availability constraints were mentioned (waiting lists and few vacancies), which may affect move-in timing and negotiating power.

In summary, St. Catherine Commons is viewed as an attractive, activity-rich option for independent seniors seeking a lakefront, social community with responsive frontline staff and good emergency responsiveness. Prospective residents and families should weigh the higher cost and potential for uneven amenity allocation, clarify meal-service expectations and maintenance response times, and discuss privacy and care-model policies (including procedures for apartment entry and assisted-living transitions) before committing. Comparing service levels, total monthly cost, and unit amenities with nearby alternatives will help determine fit for individual needs and budgets.

About St. Catherine Commons - Independent Living

St. Catherine Commons - Independent Living sits in Kenosha, WI, on the grounds of the old St. Catherine's Hospital where you can spot historic artifacts built right into the community, which kind of gives the whole place a sense of character and history that you don't see everywhere, and the scenic views of Lake Michigan from around the property are something people tend to talk about. The community offers independent living for older adults who don't need any daily help, though they also have assisted living, memory care-called Blu Grotto®-and personal care plans for people who want a little more support, so they cover a wide range. There are luxury villas and apartments for independent living, plus spacious studios if extra care is needed, so residents get to pick what works best, and everything's set up for wheelchair use or easy access.

The building itself is modern and attractive, with a covered entry, landscaped grounds, and lots of outdoor seating and patios where folks can spend time. You'll find a heated underground parking area, which comes in handy during Wisconsin winters, and there's an on-site market for snacks and drinks where you can relax with neighbors. In the main gathering spaces, there's comfortable leather furniture, fireplaces, and natural light, with a big lounge area for socializing. You get meals in a restaurant-style dining room with lots of windows, and the kitchen staff aims to serve food that's both tasty and good for you. There's also a recreation room with billiards and vintage movie posters hanging up, a well-stocked library with books and workspaces, and a quiet chapel for reflection and community gatherings.

People who live here tend to stay pretty active. The calendar is always full, whether that's social or educational events, special activities, or different clubs and programs meant to help folks make new friends, keep up with hobbies, or even learn a thing or two if they want. Residents can join in group outings or just enjoy organized activities in the building, and regular transportation is available for appointments or errands. There's a focus on making life easy, so most things like laundry, maintenance, or meals are managed for you, and the staff has a reputation for being friendly, helpful, and treating everyone a bit like family. Whether it's support with things like bathing or medication, or just being around to help organize social time, they try to keep it simple and comfortable for residents. The community's known for offering options for active, independent seniors and for folks who may eventually want a little more help-all in one place that feels like home, with a bit of history and a lot of possibilities for daily life.
