    Caring family owned lakeside community

I moved my mom here and I'm very pleased. It's a family-owned, homey community with exceptionally caring staff, friendly residents and an active social calendar (bingo, chess, fishing, monthly entertainment); the grounds are immaculate with lovely lake views. Meals are solid, transportation and safety features are reliable, and overall it's affordable and well run - I highly recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Lake Sherwood Village presents as a well-maintained, family-owned senior living community with strong emphasis on social engagement and routine amenities. Across reviews, frontline caregiving staff receive consistent praise for attentiveness, friendliness and day-to-day support; many families and residents describe a welcoming atmosphere in common areas, active programming, and staff who assist with appointments and individualized meal requests. The community’s physical plant — updated interiors, tidy grounds, and lake views — is frequently described as clean and pleasant, and safety features such as emergency call systems are noted as reassuring.

Activity programming is a clear strength. Reviewers highlight a broad schedule of group offerings (bingo, monthly entertainment, chess and checkers, fishing outings, puzzles and games) that support resident engagement and social connection. Transportation or shuttle services for medical appointments are appreciated, and dining staff are characterized as accommodating when specific requests (for example, salads or modifications) are needed. Affordability and roomy apartment options are additional positive themes.

Areas for prospective residents to consider include apartment layout and privacy. Several accounts describe studio-style or open-plan units with limited separation between sleeping and living areas, which some residents found to feel more hotel-like than homelike. Dining quality is described as uneven: while some meals are well received and staff are helpful, other comments reference limited menu variety and occasional monotony in offerings.

A notable pattern is divergence between praise for frontline staff and concerns about administrative leadership. While ownership and many direct-care employees are described positively, a subset of reviewers raised serious concerns about upper-management conduct, communication style, and financial transparency. These comments indicate potential variability in administrative responsiveness and family communication; prospective residents and families should discuss managerial policies, billing practices, and channels for raising concerns during a tour. Operational terms such as a mandatory one-year lease and additional fees for nursing services are practical constraints to factor into decision-making.

Overall, Lake Sherwood Village appears to offer a clean, active, and affordable environment with strong direct-care relationships and engaging programming. Prospective residents should weigh the benefits of social programming, safety features, and location against the facility’s apartment configurations, dining preferences, and the need to clarify management practices, lease terms, and ancillary service fees before committing.

    About Lake Sherwood Village

Lake Sherwood Village sits by a lake at the entrance of Lake Sherwood Acres in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and has been open since 1998, started by three brothers from Avoyelles Parish. The community provides independent retirement living for active seniors, as well as memory care and assisted living services, focusing on helping residents keep their independence while offering help when needed. Lake Sherwood Village isn't an assisted living facility or a nursing home, but it offers a variety of care options that you can tailor with local providers like Audubon Healthcare Services and Nursing Care Connections, which helps folks stay in the same place even if their needs change. There are studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, all with full kitchens, microwaves, dishwashers, bay windows, and other features like individually controlled heating and air conditioning. The apartments are age-restricted for those 55 and older, and the 120 units are designed to be maintenance-free, with services like weekly housekeeping, laundry, and valet trash pickup. Staff stay on site 24 hours a day, handling emergencies and helping with things like transferring from bed to wheelchair and diabetes management.

Meals are taken care of, with breakfast and lunch served every day, and you can also get meal delivery if you prefer to eat in your apartment or need help. For socializing, the community offers both indoor and outdoor common areas, including a private dining room, a library, a beauty salon, and a chapel for religious services. The lake out front allows for fishing, and there's a walking trail for daily strolls. Residents have access to a robust calendar of hobbies, educational programs, and social events to keep everyone busy and connected, plus community-wide announcements through an in-house channel and a monthly newsletter. The activity schedule includes onsite events, devotional services, and structured social programs aimed at helping folks stay mentally and physically sharp.

When it comes to care, Lake Sherwood Village provides both independent living for active seniors as well as memory care for those who need help with Alzheimer's or similar conditions, with housing, therapy, and extra support available. Assisted living services cover help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and medication management. Folks who need extra medical help can arrange for home care and hospice through nearby agencies, so they don't have to move if their health changes. Those who want to stay active and involved get the support and company they need because staff are known for being helpful, friendly, and dedicated to making everyone feel at home.

Residents enjoy easy access to hospitals, doctors' offices, banks, and shopping centers thanks to transportation services, and there's a medical transport service for appointments or errands. Each floor has storage rooms and free self-service laundry. The property's high-speed Wi-Fi, expanded cable TV, and the security of a 24-hour emergency call system add peace of mind. Folks who choose Lake Sherwood Village get the benefit of a laid-back, lakeside lifestyle where meals, maintenance, utilities, and activities are all bundled together for ease, and the monthly rent includes an apartment with a full kitchen, so you can cook if you want to. With a close-knit sense of community rooted in southern tradition, Lake Sherwood Village aims to provide safety, a sense of belonging, and a place where seniors can stay healthy, happy, and worry-free for as long as possible. The facility has earned a solid 4.1 rating from 22 reviews and has picked up honors like Best of Senior Living and Best Activities awards, mostly getting recognized for its safe environment and the joyful attitude of its staff.
