    Country-club vibe, clean and home-like

I love this place - it has a country-club vibe, is clean and home-like with spacious rooms and a pleasant courtyard for visits. The staff are loving, attentive and well-trained, residents are treated with dignity, and the busy activity program keeps everyone engaged; the Alzheimer's unit is clean and odor-free. I'm very pleased and would highly recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall assessment Reviews portray The Pines Healthcare & Rehab Centers โ€” Machias Campus as a facility with consistently praised caregiving, a pleasant physical environment, and an active social program. Families and residents commonly emphasize compassionate, well-trained staff and attentive long-term care; several comments highlight the Alzheimer's/dementia unit as an established part of the campus. The facilityโ€™s interior design and courtyard contribute to a home-like, country-club atmosphere that many find comfortable and welcoming. Care quality and staff Care quality is described positively in most accounts. Reviewers note caring, attentive staff who communicate effectively with families and who support long-term residents' needs. The language used suggests staff competency and a generally respectful approach to resident dignity. However, there are operational concerns around responsiveness and monitoring: reviewers indicate inconsistent rounding and delays in staff attention in some situations, and these issues appear to be more pronounced during care transitions and transfers, particularly involving the dementia unit. Activities and social programming The facility's activity program receives strong praise overall, with descriptions of a busy and engaging schedule that contributes to resident satisfaction. That said, there is a pattern of uneven engagement: while many residents appear to benefit from robust programming, some residents or units are described as less engaged or without adequate activity participation. Prospective families should ask about how activities are tailored and how participation is encouraged for residents with differing cognitive and mobility levels. Facilities and environment Physical facilities are frequently cited as a strength. Reviews mention clean, odor-free common areas, spacious and comfortable rooms, and an accessible courtyard that supports family visits. The home-like design and perceived โ€˜โ€˜country-clubโ€™โ€™ feel are recurrent positive impressions, suggesting an environment that promotes comfort and social interaction. Management and operational patterns Communication from staff is regarded as informative and family-oriented in many accounts, which supports trust and continuity for long-term residents. At the same time, recurring operational themes point to process-level gaps: transfer procedures within the dementia unit and variability in supervision around transitions suggest opportunities for management to tighten protocols, improve handoffs, and standardize rounding practices. These are actionable areas that administration can address to align the facilityโ€™s operational reliability with its generally high standard of care. What to investigate on a visit Visitors should evaluate transfer and handoff procedures in the dementia unit, observe staff rounding patterns, and ask how activity participation is monitored and encouraged across units. Also confirm specifics about dining, therapy services, and staffing levels at different times of day, since those areas were not consistently described in the available summaries. Overall, The Pines โ€” Machias Campus appears to offer strong, compassionate care and a welcoming environment, with specific operational improvements that could enhance consistency for residents with higher supervision needs.

    About The Pines Machias Campus

The Pines Healthcare & Rehab Centers Machias Campus sits on a quiet, rural spot near Lime Lake in Machias, New York, and the place offers both long-term nursing care and short-term rehabilitation in a government, county-owned setting with 115 beds, including both private and semi-private rooms that come furnished, have private bathrooms, kitchenettes, telephones, cable TV, air conditioning, and strong Wi-Fi, which is good for staying in touch with family or watching shows. The facility accepts Medicare and Medicaid, and it serves older adults who need skilled nursing care, help with transferring, medication management, and 24-hour supervision, with a 24-hour emergency call system in place for safety. English-speaking caregivers look after residents, and you'll find a mixed schedule of daily events like Happy Hour, game nights, the Candy Cart, music sessions, bingo, church services, and regular social gatherings, with both resident-run activities and community-sponsored programs to help folks stay active or meet new friends.

The Pines Machias Campus operates as part of a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), offers several types of housing and care, and also has a resident and family council to hear concerns, give feedback, and keep care standards in check. Residents have access to transportation and parking services, which helps with appointments and outings, and meals are served in a communal dining room with choices like restaurant-style options, allergy-friendly meals, special diets for diabetes, and food prepared by a professional chef, so people don't have to worry about finding safe meals. The building itself features spaces like an arts and activity room, library, fitness room, spa and wellness area, game room, business room, outdoor walking paths, gardens, and even an on-site movie theater, which can be nice when folks want something to do or a bit of scenery. Nurses are on shift for 12 to 16 hours a day and backup is available at all times for emergencies, while special care is provided for people who can't walk or have other serious health needs.

There's a strong focus on health care services, so residents get help with bathing, dressing, and everyday needs, with the option for short-term rehabilitation after a hospital stay between home and longer-term care if needed. Staff includes Joy Lavelle, who manages long-term placement, Gretchen Eddy for short-term rehab placement, a Director of Nursing named Dawn Sprague, and Tammy Schmidt as the administrator, with Kelly Reed acting as Director of Nursing Facilities. There's also a Pandemic Emergency Plan in place, and the place stays involved with the larger community, holding events on dates like July 25, 26, and 27, 2025. The Pines Machias Campus has a reputation for listening to residents and families and making changes based on what they hear, and the facility's simple approach means care is practical, honest, and aimed at helping people, whether they're planning to stay for a while or just need some help getting back on their feet.
