    Positive short-term rehab, compassionate staff

I had a very positive short-term rehab stay at Shoreland. The therapy team (Denise and Laura Ann included), nurses and aides were compassionate, attentive and helped restore my strength with comfortable sessions and a solid home exercise plan. The facility felt clean, welcoming and well-managed, with good meals, activities and responsive administration - I'd recommend it for resident-focused, respectful care.

    Summary of reviews

Shoreland Health Care & Retirement is consistently described as a competent option for short-term rehabilitation and restorative care, with repeated praise for its therapy programs and direct caregivers. Therapy services โ€” including physical and occupational therapy โ€” receive strong, specific endorsement for effectiveness, personalized exercise plans, and successful functional restoration. CNAs and many frontline staff are frequently characterized as compassionate, attentive, and family-oriented, contributing to a welcoming, well-maintained environment and a sense of peace of mind for families.

Facility amenities and environment are generally viewed positively. Reviewers note a clean, orderly facility with good maintenance, a single-level layout with wings offering private and shared room options, on-site salon services, and dedicated therapy spaces. The activities program is described as active and engaging, and administrative staff are often cited as supportive and responsive when coordinating stays. These strengths make Shoreland a viable local option for rehabilitation stays and those seeking a community-oriented setting.

Several operational issues recur across the reviews and warrant consideration. There are repeated mentions of inconsistent clinical responsiveness at the nursing level and specific concerns tied to medication timing and verification. These accounts point to gaps in medication-administration controls and documentation, as well as broader internal communication breakdowns between nursing, therapy, and administrative staff. Families should be aware that discharge planning has, at times, occurred with little advance notice and that coordination around physician orders and medication delivery may require active follow-up.

Service-level variability is another noted pattern. Food quality is described as inconsistent, and housekeeping interactions have at times been characterized as curt. Room size limitations are noted for some accommodations, and there is no robust on-site memory-care program referenced in the reviews. Taken together, these points indicate areas where operational consistency could be improved even as day-to-day caregiving and therapy remain strengths.

Overall, Shoreland appears to deliver strong therapy-driven rehabilitation and compassionate hands-on caregiving, supported by a clean facility and engaged activities. Prospective residents and families considering Shoreland should weigh its rehabilitative strengths and supportive frontline staff against the facility-level issues around nursing consistency, medication management, communication, and memory-care availability. Asking targeted questions about medication-verification procedures, RN staffing patterns, discharge timelines, and dietary/housekeeping expectations can help align expectations prior to admission.

About Shoreland Health Care & Retirement

Shoreland Health Care & Retirement Center sits in a quiet residential area off 200 Flowers-Pridgen Drive in Whiteville, North Carolina, not far from grocery stores, restaurants, churches, pharmacies, and the Columbus Regional Medical Center, and after a full renovation in 2020 the place feels brighter, with roomy private and semi-private suites, flat-screen TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi, and big lounge spaces to gather in, while the landscaped courtyards and outdoor sitting areas let folks spend time in the sun. The Center's got 99 skilled nursing beds and gives around-the-clock care with a licensed team that handles short-term stays, rehab after surgery or illness, hospice, respite services, and long-term living, with registered nurses, LPNs, and nursing assistants always on-site. The rehabilitation program uses a large therapy gym and an Activities of Daily Living Suite, and offers all sorts of therapies like physical, occupational, and speech therapy, along with advanced services like pain management, diathermy, and vital stimulation to help with joint, muscle, or swallowing problems, and if someone's got a wound or needs IV or respiratory care, the facility even got certified by Quality Surgical Management for wound care in 2023, with special attention from their wound care physician. Housekeeping and linen services are handled every day, and there's in-room dining or restaurant-style meals with options to fit special diets-plus, staff will help arrange transportation for doctor visits, daily errands, or local outings. Folks can join group exercise, table games, music therapy, movie dates, and the life enrichment programs, which keep everyone connected, while the personal emergency systems and medication help provide peace of mind for residents and families alike. They make sure folks get the help needed, whether it's incontinence care, fall prevention, geriatric psychiatry, secondary medical conditions, or just a haircut at the on-site salon, and there's opportunities for seniors to volunteer or get involved with social and advocacy programs, as well as insurance guidance, prescription assistance, and veteran resources. People can use the lounges, cable TVs, the therapy gym, and gathering spaces whenever they want, and if someone needs recovery after a hospital stay or ongoing support with Alzheimer's care, the staff works with physicians to build a care plan, always trying to help residents regain skills and keep readmission rates low, treating everyone with dignity and compassion, whether they're here for a short stay or making it their home for the long haul.
