    Caring staff; excellent rehab; spotless

I'm very pleased with Matlock Place - the staff are caring, dedicated, and go above and beyond, and the rooms are spacious and spotlessly clean. My husband gets excellent, rehab-focused care with daily physical therapy, on-site X-rays and doctor visits, and the team is respectful and attentive; he's even happy with the food. I'm grateful for the safety measures and would highly recommend Matlock Place.

    Summary of reviews

Matlock Place Health & Rehabilitation Center elicits a broadly mixed set of impressions: reviewers highlight several operational strengths alongside persistent, facility-level weaknesses. Positive feedback centers on the facilityโ€™s physical upkeep, admissions process, rehabilitation programming, and pockets of very attentive caregiving. Families and residents praised a clean environment, helpful admissions staff, accessible on-site medical diagnostics (including X-ray and physician visits), and therapy teams that delivered daily rehabilitation for some patients. Several reviewers also noted accommodating meal options for specific preferences and regular recreational activities such as bingo.

At the same time, a recurring pattern of care-quality and systems issues appears across the reviews. The most commonly cited operational problems are inconsistent responsiveness to call lights and assistance requests, uneven personal-care practices (including incontinence-care concerns and irregular bathing schedules), and variability in medication administration and monitoring. Several reviewers described delays in clinical escalation and transfers, and there are repeated concerns about transfer- and fall-safety practices. A few reviews described serious adverse events and alleged mishandling that resulted in hospital transfer or other severe outcomes; these accounts underline the need to verify current safety protocols and incident-response procedures.

Staffing and communication are prominent themes. Many families praised individual caregivers as dedicated and hardworking, and admissions personnel were frequently described as kind and informative. Conversely, others reported rude or brusque interactions, language barriers that impeded care, and staffing shortages that were especially evident on weekends or after hours. Communication with families and legal representatives was frequently characterized as inconsistent โ€” examples include delayed or absent notifications about changes in condition, confusion around discharge timing, and limited after-hours phone access. Administrative concerns also included unclear discharge coordination and questions about billing/financial accounting.

Dining and activities are variable. Some residents and families found the kitchen accommodating to preferences and enjoyed social programs; others reported incorrect orders, cold meals, and inconsistent meal-service continuity. Recreational activities exist and provide engagement for some residents, though several comments indicated residents appeared lonely or would benefit from expanded programming.

Facility appearance and amenities receive generally positive remarks: many reviewers called the institution clean, with spacious rooms and an attractive exterior. At the same time, procedural issues were noted such as limited room orientation for new residents and inconsistent enforcement of visitor/service-animal accommodations.

In summary, Matlock Place demonstrates the capacity to provide strong rehabilitative services and has staff members and departments that families found compassionate and effective. However, persistent operational weaknesses โ€” notably in responsiveness, personal-care management, medication oversight, family communication, staffing consistency, and administrative coordination โ€” are also evident. Prospective residents and families should weigh the facilityโ€™s clinical and logistical strengths against these recurring concerns and consider asking targeted questions during a tour: current staffing ratios and weekend coverage, average call-button response times, procedures for incontinence and bathing schedules, medication-safety protocols, fall-prevention measures, language-access services, and discharge/after-hours communication processes.
