    Warm, caring community; excellent meals

I placed my parent here and have been very pleased. The staff and on-site managers are caring, professional and responsive, the community is spotless and well-maintained, and meals are excellent with three chef-prepared sittings daily. There are abundant activities, handy transportation and a warm, safe, home-like atmosphere - I'd recommend it to families.

    Summary of reviews

Summit Glen presents as a well-kept, recently updated independent living community with a consistent emphasis on hospitality, routine health monitoring, and social engagement. Across reviews the residence is described as clean, tastefully decorated, and equipped with multiple communal spaces that support dining, entertainment and activities. Common amenities—library, theater, salon, chapel and fitness areas—are cited frequently, as are patios/balconies and a variety of apartment floor plans. Management visibility is a recurrent theme: on-site, live-in directors and 24/7 availability are highlighted as contributors to family confidence and prompt emergency response.

Staff quality and resident interactions are prominent strengths. Many accounts emphasize compassionate, attentive caregivers and managers who know residents by name, perform welfare checks, and maintain open communication with families. That hands-on management style is paired with proactive infection-control practices that reviewers credited during recent public-health events. The community atmosphere is often described as social and family-like, with residents forming friendships and staff encouraging participation in daily programs.

Dining and food service receive mixed, but instructive, feedback. Numerous reviewers praise chef-prepared meals, plentiful choices, communal dining and readily available snacks; several describe meals as delicious and a social highlight. However, there is a recurring pattern of variability: some residents experienced undercooked or institutional-tasting entrees, and multiple comments point to slow table service or meal-delivery delays. A subset of reviews raised specific kitchen-process concerns; these suggest potential gaps in food-safety practices and training that the provider may need to address to ensure consistent culinary quality.

Activities and programming are uniformly well regarded. The activity calendar includes exercise classes (chair Zumba/yoga), arts and crafts, games, outings, seasonal events, and regular transportation for shopping and appointments. Reviewers frequently note that programming helps reduce isolation and improves residents’ mood and social engagement. Transportation and shuttle service are valued, though several reviewers describe limits to frequency or scheduling that can restrict spontaneity for errands or appointments.

Operational and facility-level observations are generally positive but not without caveats. Maintenance responsiveness and housekeeping are often praised, yet a subset of comments points to occasional follow-through issues with vendors and lower-level maintenance tasks. Physical-plant items such as elevator speed and hallway ventilation were noted as areas needing attention in some locations. Importantly, Summit Glen is structured for independent living; those needing higher-acuity or assisted-living services should plan for alternative arrangements.

In summary, Summit Glen's core strengths are its visible on-site management, a staff culture oriented toward engagement and compassion, a clean modern campus, and a broad activity program that supports social life. Prospective residents and families should weigh those positives against operational patterns cited by some reviewers: inconsistent dining experiences and meal service speed, variability in some front-line staff conduct and training, limited transportation frequency, and the independent-living scope of services. For families considering Summit Glen, recommended due diligence includes sampling multiple meals at different service times, discussing specific kitchen and sanitation protocols, confirming transportation schedules and unit amenities (in-unit laundry or full kitchens), and reviewing how the community manages staff training and visitor policies during infection-control events.

About Summit Glen Gracious Retirement Living

Summit Glen Gracious Retirement Living in Colorado Springs offers independent living for seniors who want support with daily life but still want to keep their independence, and you'll find private apartments here with emergency pull cords connected to the on-site managers who live at the community and are always available, day or night, to help or answer questions, and the apartments come in many different sizes like studios, one-bedrooms, or two-bedrooms, with kitchenettes and spacious bathrooms that feel open and bright, and you'll get weekly housekeeping and laundry service, which means someone comes in to handle cleaning and dirty linens so there's less to worry about. Residents enjoy three meals each day, cooked by a culinary team and served restaurant-style by friendly staff, and the food is made from scratch, focusing on fresh and healthy options, so you won't have to think about cooking unless you want to. There's a full calendar of daily activities and events that range from discussion groups and creative art or writing programs to games, cultural outings, and group trips to local museums or theaters, and activity directors plan these events with input from residents, keeping the days lively and giving everyone a chance to be involved as much or as little as they like.

The community bus helps residents get to doctors' appointments, run errands, or join shopping trips and planned excursions, and there's no need to drive if you don't want to, because transportation is included in the monthly rent, which also covers electricity, gas, water, basic cable, meals, and all the cleaning services, making things simpler when it comes to paying bills. The building has fire prevention systems and emergency features for safety and peace of mind, and the grounds include relaxing outdoor areas where you can walk, hike, or just sit and talk with friends and family visiting. Inside, there are common lounges, a computer room, fitness center, beauty parlor, and spaces where folks often gather for puzzles, quiet reading, or conversations, and the environment feels family-like, with live-in managers who know everyone by name. If you travel, there's the Hawthorn Resident Travel Program, which gives residents a chance to stay up to seven nights at over 70 other communities across the country, with meals and activities included at no extra cost, making it easy to visit family or just go on a new adventure. Pets are welcome, and there are even services to help with them. Summit Glen maintains a 4.7-star rating from reviews, which shows many people find it a nice place to spend retirement, and it's clear the focus here is on comfort, safety, and a simple, enjoyable retirement with as much or as little activity as you prefer, all in a setting designed for seniors who value both their independence and the chance to be part of a caring, active community.
